List of melees which can hold their own against rangeds?

YumaS2Astral··2 votes·379 views

With the many people complaining about the melee x ranged problem, I want to know which melees are the best options against ranged champions, since every rule has its exceptions in League.

For example, Irelia is known as the reason why top lane is not completely dominated by rangeds at this point. She fucks up many ranged champions so hard with her gap closer, stun, passive, and sustain.

Yasuo is also good into rangeds. Like Irelia, he also has a dangerous gap closer which can be used a lot of times in lane, especially if you max E first. WIth his passive and his windwall, it is also really hard to poke Yasuo and damage Yasuo during his all-ins as a ranged champion.

Pantheon has a passive that can block auto-attacks and his point-click ranged Q which does a lot of damage early, lets him hold his own against rangeds pretty well.

On your opinion, are there any other melees which could actually lane against rangeds without being harassed to death?

Sense you all are running around with your heads blown off looking for the perfect "Ranged counter"

Ill give you a hint.. Of the bane of our existance.. You could say he's.. "Okay". . . . Still nothing? Its RAMMUS.

You sick of AD's well he's your new main.

Sick of AP? Try Galio.

"But Ana... Gallo has Ranged Abilities!"

Well his AAs are melee so he's still melee. And there are plenty of melee champions with ranged abilities. If you wanna be a pure melee. And get countered by teemo every game. Your problem.

No. Galio is the champion you play when you're sick of EVERYBODY.

Other than Assassins and the ones you named? Yeah can't think of any.

Zed . if u can even call him "melee".

i honeslty dont udnerstand they whole "melee vs ranged" bull

most "melee" champs have RANGED abilties.. and the AUTO's if any AP champ are not going to do shit vs you anyways so

Kennen actually starts with Doran's Blade and has a high base attack speed. His autos are not to be ignored in the early game. Especially if he maxes his W first like many do in this kind of matchup.

When he does decide to harass you, you can't trade back because you now have two storm marks on you and will be stunned instantly after you get close.

They're just butthurt about not being able to dominate completely on melee.

I think its funny because the the team with the two melee champions... Won worlds.

Yea.. Real disadvantage.

DrMundo can just sit around and farm with cleavers but can't do much more than that unless he gets a gank, but he can bore his opponent to death with super safe farming.

Gangplank used to be able to do the same but I'm not sure if he's too nerfed to manage it now.

Mundo works very well against mages:

  1. He can rush a item 3065 (this item is really good for Mundo but he can't build this early against ADs)
  2. Massive sustain coupled with SV's magic resistance and health = mages are not going to even touch him anytime soon
  3. If Mundo hits just one cleaver against a mage, he can chase them down until they die, and never die himself

However he doesn't work nearly as well against ranged ADs. Those have even better early game harass due to their autos. And they can build early items like:

  1. item 3123 (to reduce Mundo's sustain)
  2. item 1053 (can give sustain to the ADs themselves, and builds into lots of useful items)
  3. Penetration items like item 3071 (most APs can't rush item 3135 as they really need other items first)

On top of that, Mundo can't build a Spirit Visage against ADs. He needs armor items first to actually be able to endure them.

Akali - at least she completely destroys Quinn top (I've been up 3-0 on her before 6 with her summoners down and mine up, and she can still 100-0 me once she gets her ult).

Jax - basically a worse version of Irelia at it, but still, a version of Irelia. He has a gap closer and an auto attack avoiding stun.

JarvanIV - I play this guy. The e-q-enhanced auto combo can really apply a fast combo, while using the W while walking out can mitigate retaliation damage (and apply a slow to let you make distance). Once you hit 6 the second gap closer is good for all ins.

Malphite - His shield lets him get some farm without getting too low, and he's just so tanky. With his hardest-engage ultimate, he works out pretty well.

Maokai - He's able to farm reasonably and thanks to his passive stay fit in lane. He's also tanky enough to survive and is great against squishy comps in the late game. His gank assist is also unreal, and the biggest weakness of these ranged top-laners is early ganks.

Renekton - Two dashes. Not the best counterpick but he can still work.

Singed - Just farm until they back and you can start proxying. He may still have a poor laning phase against them, but will make up for it once he gets some items.

Sion - A very strong pick. His poke and tankiness make the lane basically a farm lane, where he'll definitively outscale his ranged opponent.

At the risk of being branded insane: Nasus

That's a resolve-nasus, not the 40% winrate Stormraiders-wannabe-nasus BS.

Take a safe farmlane, utilize the turret, utilize the new ult (and those sweet sweet free tankstats :D). Yes, the early game is harsh, but once the tankstats roll in, Susan quickly becomes scary...single most powerful targeted slow in the game on an 8 second cooldown and massive burst are hell for a range.

Best princess EU2 votes

that's just bs, no sane ranged champ will let nasus survive in early game, while ranged champ also scales well

and nasus falls of late game if enemy teams no-exceptions builds armor, unless he builds armor pene. His E gives him 40 armor pene, but flat armor pene is trash against a lot of armor, and it can be removed by dashing out of his E.

franticFurball2 votes

I think you would be surprised what it takes to kill Nasus early, or even make him stop farming.

http://champion.gg/champion/Nasus

Look at the list of unfavourable matchups against Susan in Plat and above. Only ranged champion among the top 10 is Jayce, who by all accounts is currently just broken af.

And that's still the 6.20 information. Still waiting on the 6.21 matchup data, with the changes to the ult.

Best princess EU2 votes

what the fuck?

he has sub 50% win rate against every ranged champ, gnar kennen jayce and you want people to pick nasus against them?

franticFurball1 votes

I don't want people to pick or do anything.

I couldn't care less what people do, in fact, if all of you just play FotM and I get to play my Doge (66% winrate over 60 games btw. before I quit S6 because DynamicGarbage got annoying and Overwatch came out) and smash toplane after toplane _ (because I have 3 years of experience maining the champ, and the guy in front of me can barely name his champions skills becuase he jumped on the FotM train 2 days ago)_, I would be a happy camper.

I am pointing out what I have seen and played successfully.

However, what I would really like to know, is how a guy who doesn't even play the champion, gets to think he can make an accurate statement about how a champ plays, and what he is strong/weak against.

Ahristocats2 votes

i don't need stats to know that a farm reliant champ like nasus is going to get destroyed by people that prevents you from farming.

though new nasus might be strong in general due to his new ulti, which means that you may pick him, lose lane, and win game.

franticFurball2 votes

That is true, but who really prevents Nasus from farming?

Most AD ranged champs get into trouble once the Arm rolls in, especially due to how dangerous ganks are when you get Withered. Most AP ranged run out of ressources, before Nasus runs out of sustain.

There are three ranged Champions that I really struggled against as Nasus when I was still playing in Season 6: Graves, Jayce and Kennen.

Graves got nerfed (apparently, I wasn't here for a couple months cuz DynQueue & Overwatch), Jayce is currently broken, and Kennen is Kennen. And that's it, those were the only ones that gave me a real headache.

This is just my opinion, but I am far more worried about a competent Darius or Olaf than I am about a ranged lane opponent. Maybe its because I main the champ, maybe its because I am among the 10% of players who play Nasus as Resolve instead of Cunning. But I have no issues taking my Doge into lane against Ranged.

YumaS2Astral1 votes

When playing Nasus, I didn't had problems against Graves and Jayce either, due to the fact that I was starting Cloth + 5 pots and rushing armor.

Maybe I was just going against bad Graves and bad Jayces.

franticFurball1 votes

Did that too, it was the only way to survive the early sometimes :D

The thing with Graves and Jayce is, they require skill (yes, even Graves, stop laughing ^^). Knowing when you can engage, and knowing your, and your opponents damage is key for them, and a lot of people can't pull it off.

Looking at the match-up perfomances of the most popular ranged tops (the ones that are top 15 in pickrate, Jayce Kennen Gnar Teemo ):

JarvanIV : Can you say oneshot?

DrMundo : Mundo cleaves where he pleases. Seriously, he gets too resislient too fast for those champions to deal with (save for Teemo )

Malphite : Not for Kennen, though. Against ADs, he can just rush item 3068 and become virtually unkillable.

Poppy : Against Jayce and Gnar, not against Kennen. Same idea as Malphite.

Sion : Against all of them. Same story as above. Utterly crushes Gnar - almost 66% winrate in that match-up.

MonkeyKing : Generally, same idea as J4.

Chogath : For some reason, does really well against Jayce, but not so much into the other three.

Generally speaking, the thing about these ranged top laners is that they are really good at countering the most popular melee champions - Riven, Darius, Renekton, Fiora, Gangplank and (in Kennen's case) Yasuo. And if you go with the stereotype, the players of these champions are the kind of people that look for blame for their losses anywhere but themselves.
