Some quick thoughts on Trundle

procrastinating right now, been thinking about how to make Trundle healthier while retaining his unique place among not just juggernauts but the entire roster as this stat-stealing tank-buster kinda guy. his kit is lacking in its execution but he's a pretty nice concept, and he manages to be a champion that comes back on his own when the meta allows him to.

so what I think the main issues are with him;

  • lack of counterplay/agency in dealing with his R; he's going to press R on your tank and then run your carry down while making himself unkillable and making your front line into paper, and there's not much you get to do about it
  • no complex decision making (not necessarily a bad thing but could afford to have more, i think); he drops his W, autos and Qs you until he comes out on top, sometimes with an E to kite or chase and there's not much else to it. he's pretty much nothing but stats.

so a rough idea I had was to make R either a mark on one target, or a self-buff, and the general gist is to reduce the up-front effectiveness of it, but he can now drag out the buff for much longer to become a very strong sustained threat. So, a tank that's been ulted but disengages him quickly won't suffer much, but if he sticks to them and lands a lot of hits, he'll just keep draining their health and stats and adding it to his own, and the duration that he keeps the stats grows the longer he hits them. If it were a self-buff, it'd work more or less the same way, but he'd get an on-attack effect of stealing a % of armor/MR and health of whoever he DPS's, and he can stack it all up from multiple people if he manages to switch targets reasonably.

i haven't thought of a solution to the second part yet; his Q and/or W would need to change and given that Q's just an attack reset, it'd probably be the latter that gets shuffled around. possibly changing the up-front bonus healing on his W to instead be a big % missing health boost at the end of it, building up for landing hits on champions, minions and monsters? (reduced on minions)

it's kind of rough and i won't even say it's a good idea; but I'd like to see Trundle be a good champion without people hating his existence.

Trundle is fine as is.

The biggest counterplay to his ult is simply walking away from him until it wears off. That's what anyone competent at this game does whenever he ults. Darius and Illaoi can out-trade him in lane even when he ults.

He generally has to use 2 spells, which cost a fair amount of mana, to close the gap on someone and most champions can still kite him under those conditions. He's not like a Vi or [insert gap-closing + burst oriented bruiser/fighter here] who's going to jump in your face with frontloaded damage and hard CC. He's fully melee with no burst, gap closer, or stun, giving you plenty of time to react to him. There isn't a single thing in Trundle's kit that doesn't have counterplay. Riot already removed his ability to Q towers (even though it's apparently okay when Wukong and Garen do it) and nerfed his ult CD. He doesn't need any more changes.
