Winning and having fun in League are not complentary anymore

Winning vs having fun.

The gap between these two ideals has exponentially increased in the last year or so in League. League has become victim to this problem and its not the only game that has succumbed to this issue.

Winning in league today requires:

-Playing meta slaves which can be extremely boring -Having little agency over your choices -Playing abusive champions or using abusive items to get ahead

Having fun in league is:

-Obviously not caring much about what is being played -You play whatever you want with the possibility you might get flamed -You force agency upon yourself but the choices you make are outweighted by meta slaves -Try to enjoy the game as a new player because you found X champion cool and interesting

Ever face the reality of your games that you win feel extremely unfufilling?

Ever feel like you have no choice on what to play?

Ever get that feeling that if you don’t play X champion you might lose?

Ever feel that a loss makes you feel extremely hopeless?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then League of Legends has become victim to lack of player choices and agency.

Winning vs having fun.

Winning is fun yes. Having fun doesn't require you to win. If you are only playing this game to win, then you are only having fun 50% of the time so you shouldn't be wasting your time playing this game if that is the case

If everyone is flaming each other, then yes. Otherwise, doesn't really matter.

No I play what I want to

No. You don't need to play X champion to win if you are actually good at the game

No. Winning/Losing doesn't really matter if you are having fun.

It's really annoying seeing all these people that only play to win. The only people that should be doing that are the pros where it actually matters. If you are playing any game at all you should be playing it to have fun regardless of winning or losing. If you are only playing to win you are selling yourself short and is why you aren't having fun playing the game. The hard truth is that it is nobody's fault but yours.

So why should I put time into a game if I don’t want to win?

Journey vs Destination.

If you don't enjoy the actual gameplay, you should just find another game where you do.

Not saying League isn't FUBAR, just saying that "why should I bother if I'm not trying to win" is a bad way to look at it.

You should play with the intent to win, but if you are only playing to win and winning is the only way to have fun, then this is not a game for you. Focus on the gameplay not whether you win or lose.

I always have the intent to win, I want to win with my choice and with my choosing with all the options in the game. Not the limited meta.

No? I literally play Anivia support, Ahri support, Syndra support, Taliyah support and can still have as much, if not more fun than I play competitively.

Generally for me, if I'm in a competitive mood and that I place myself in a competitive mode (draft or ranked), I automatically turn on the seriousness and expect a certain pattern, but when chilling or not caring much about scores and stuffs, unconventional picks can be such a blast.

In order to climb ranked, I abuse my pool 2-3 meta champions. I get very bored of them and whenever I try playing something else, like Lissandra , I have no impact on the game and thus I get flamed to hell.

That is part of the trap. If we dont play the meta champs everyone gets salty. During the preseason I was playing lots of Irelia jungle. The games I would go like 2/5/x people would rage and say "well if you played a real jungle" Like it was my fault they lost first tower at 6 minutes lol.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

But it was your fault you went 2/5 and couldn't gank.

HaIlMonitor2 votes

If I jungler dies early its because they got invaded which imo is teams fault, their laners are shit and fed enemies, or they tower dove.

The Ecdysiast1 votes

item 3340 item 3341 Everyone gets one of these to start. If a jungler gets invaded and isn't prepared, then they weren't paying attention to the enemy's picks in champion select.

Difference between having fun and being a liability to the team. Picking trash champs isnt fun for anyone.

I had a game 2 nights ago where I got stuck with ADC but didn’t really feel like playing it. So I asked my team if I could botlane Ziggs, and they were all cool with it.

Our team comp was an Amumu Top, Yasuo mid, Rammus jg, Ziggs APC and Ornn Support.

The team we were up against was Illaoi Lux Sona Sejuani andLucian.

Let me say right now, we should Not have won that game, ever. The Illaoi alone was capable of 1v5 ing us.

But after 47 minutes of torture, and 2 enemy team wipes, we won that game. And I’d be lying if I said I didn’t feel genuine excitement and joy from that win, something I haven’t felt in so long playing this game.

could you elaborate how your third point is different from your first? just curious.

support-item changes are a prime example of this. something that took a lot of player agency and choice away and that most people don´t really care about because it didn´t affect their meta sheep build.

The meta doesn't matter outside of high diamond, and even then we still see people playing competitively with oddball picks and builds, such as the AD Carry Ahri player.

False, meta picks are way stronger than non meta picks some to the point it out scales skill. While a diamond player will never in his life play a non meta pick (unless otp player) a low elo player will suffer even more if he picks a non meta pick because he doesnt know how to play around it while a diamond player will. I dont know why people keep saying it doesnt matter in low elo when it actualy does, and alot.

Look at the highest winrate champions in each Tier. Notice how they're not the same?

Highest winrate champion right now in Diamond is Akali. In every Tier below Diamond she doesn't even make the Top 10.

Highest winrate champion right now in Bronze is Sion. In every Tier above Bronze, again he doesn't even make the top Top 10.

Numbers don't lie.

League is so competitive and salty. A lot of people just want to have fun but don't want to bother getting good. It's almost like we should have separate queue's for people like that... then maybe I will be able to leave Elo hell...

Doctor Dyment1 votes

In ranked, sure. Hop on with some friends and you can goof around with pretty much whatever you want. It isn't a life or death thing, if you are having an issue having fun on your own perhaps attempt to remedy that with a friend or two.

I don't know, I've been doing really well with Urgot and he's super fun to play too. And as far as I know playing Urgot isn't "meta slaving" or "abusing champions and items". I can't talk about higher ranks, but considering that 99,6%* of the community is unranked or gold and below it doesn't really matter what it's like in higher ranks if we're talking about the average game.

*There's about 4,6 million ranked players across all servers according to op.gg, with 4,2 million being gold and below. League has 100 million monthly players according to the 2016 article, which means that 99,6% of all players are below plat

Monaghan Boy

In ranked you should always pick a champ that will suit your teams comp and help you counter your laner and it doesn't matter if you don't like playing the champ because in ranked you main goal is to climb and if that's not your main goal then don't play ranked and ruin the experience for everyone else. If you want to have 'fun' play normal's simples.
