Riot, a problem with your Champion Reveals...clarity and info issues

Not sure if this is the right subforum...

I've had a problem with the ability windows shown on the Champion Reveals, and Taliyah is an excellent case about lack of clarity and information. #The main issue? Descriptions for the abilities are not adequately demonstrated in the ability preview videos.

#Examples of this issue with Taliyah's Preview

  • Q, Threaded Volley: "Taliyah rips up the ground around her, firing a volley of five stone shards in a target direction WHILE MOVING FREELY. Casting Threaded Volley converts the area into worked ground for a few minutes. Additional Threaded Volley casts over worked ground will yield just one rock projectile."
  • What does "while moving freely" mean? That Taliyah can move while flinging the rocks? If she moves, do the rocks go in the same direction relative to her, or are they flung to the initial target location?
  • Solution: Add a second part to the ability preview showing Taliyah moving while she is threading her volley.
  • W, Seismic Shove: "Taliyah marks a target location. After a brief delay, the ground erupts, knocking up and damaging all enemies caught in the blast zone. Taliyah can recast Seismic Shove before it erupts to throw the victims in any targeted direction—even over walls."
  • Would just be nice to see the standard use case, and then an example of the re-cast's added effect case.
  • E, Unraveled Earth: "Taliyah scatters boulders onto the ground before her. Opponents who DASH THROUGH THE FRACTURED EARTH TAKE DAMAGE FROM AN EXPLOSION. After a few seconds, any REMAINING ROCKS in the field erupt, dealing a second wave of damage."
  • There's no mention of "initial" damage in the description, but you can see enemies take initial damage in the video. This leads to some ambiguity as to how damage is applied, because the ability description says that the damage is dealt to those who dash through, but we see damage dealt to stationary minions and a Xerath who is merely walking through.
  • What does "dash" mean? Is it just a general "move through the area" or "use a movement ability while in the area"? It's so vague and unclear given the spell's description and how the video shows the damage application
  • No part of the video shows a "dash" ability being used to clarify this to us players.
  • "Remaining rocks" implies that the boulders are consumed (perhaps by a dash ability?). This then also implies that the area will have "holes" where the secondary damage will not occur. Would be lovely to see this in the ability video...
  • R, Weaver's Wall: "Taliyah briefly channels before summoning a massive wall of spiraling rock that tears through the Rift in a target direction. Taliyah can reactivate Weaver's Wall while channeling to ride atop the wall as it emerges. Taking damage or inputting a move command in any direction will cut her ride short."
  • In the video example, we see a clear case of the player casting Weaver's Wall, re-activating the ability in order to ride it, and taking no damage while riding the wall.
  • This does imply that the Weaver's Wall can be created and sent out without Taliyah riding it, right? Would be nice to see that in the video.
  • If Taliyah's ride can be "cut short", what happens if that's the case? Does the wall stop where she is dropped off? Does the wall keep going on if Taliyah stops her ride? Show us these things in the video.

That's all. Just a feedback post on the lack of information and clarity for Champion Reveal ability videos. Hope this gets to a Rioter who works on the Champion Reveals.

It could be because the abilities COULD change on PBE, so they only want to show the barest functionality. Remember, the champion is still in beta at this point. If this were a set of videos for the final release, I would be annoyed as well

From what I've seen, when a champion is officially revealed, they go onto the PBE for bug fixing and testing. They don't receive functional changes once they are revealed. The ability videos are the abilities' final iterations.

Azir's W acutally DID go through a functionality change. You used to be able to summon soldier and have them attack the tower. This was changed to the single target tower damage it is today before leaving PBE. Of course, Azir did leave with a mountain of bug fixes needed, but he WAS changed functionality-wise.

Well dash is self explanatory tho. When they mean dash it means a skill that self displaces your champion in a targeted direction, example being riven Q or shen E etc. Don't confuse dash with blink as blink is more of like an instant teleport, like yasuo ult or flash or Kass ult

What you should be complaining about is the skill didn't have allied knockback in the description, as you can clearly see in the video that her e when she knock backed an enemy into it, it proced

Agreed, I was agreeing with the OP's post right up until he didn't know what "dash" means in league which is pretty well defined term that especially since they are stopped by Poppy W and Azir Ult.

The allied knockback thing is somewhat unintuitive and should have been included, you're right.

it doesnt make sense though bc in the champ preview they showed xerath taking damage....even though he has no dash lol

Thats cause it deals 2 waves of damage. The first one is when you cast the spell the second one either activates if a champion dash etc over the tiles or after a set duration.

My brother has a PBE account, and I've watched him play a couple of games; so I'm going to try to answer some of your questions here. For Threaded volley, it is cast as a linear skillshot. On cast it creates a circle centered on her current location. It then proceeds to fire 4 projectiles provided there are enemies nearby. If you move the skillshots will follow the initial cast angle, and will not "center" around any one point. Think similar to a Lucian Culling. It is also worth noting that these projectiles do AoE damage. For Unraveled Earth, as it has been noted here earlier, deals two waves of damage. It deals a smaller amount on cast, and then another after a delay. When any champion dashes (linear dash i.e. Relentless pursuit), jumps (i.e. rocket jump) gets knocked back (i.e. condemn. Worth noting that seismic shove also triggers this) or is pulled (looking at you blitz) the stones the enemy champion are "dashing" through will explode early, dealing that second wave of damage from the stones that exploded. This explosion is instant, and removes said stones from her field. It is also worth noting that any one champion can only explode up to four stones, regardless of the distance of displacement. When casting Weavers Wall, Taliyah is not required to ride it. It is completely optional so if you want to use it to flank, cut off a fleeing enemy, or both, the game allows you to do so. As for your final question, I haven't really seen this in action too much. From what I've seen, taking damage knocks taliyah off of the wall but the wall continues moving. Note that the only times I've ever really seen the damage is during flanks where she is nearing the end of her ride anyway, so take that with a grain of salt. Hope I could help!

Didn't the "Champion Spotlight" used to be a Champions reveal?

Either way, that should be the reveal.. not these crappy pages with > 10 second videos barely showing what an ability does.

I have the same issue with the reveal videos. It's like they went out of their way to not record the abilities in a way that would clear up confusion.

It's like that with a LOT of old champions too. It's super frustrating that I have to use youtube to find out a champion's kit before buying them :l

It's a reveal not a full on champion spotlight jesus christ you lot will moan about anything

I had literally all of these thoughts while watching the videos.

Except I know what a dash is >.>

To all of you who doesn't get it, what the OP wants is for the description and preview of abilities to be CRYSTAL CLEAR on its interactions . Do you know how the damage is dealt when a dash is used? Do you know exactly what happens when her ult is cancelled? Unless you have access to the PBE and can test it in-game, chances are you won't know. OP is right that this has been an ongoing problem.

It's a teaser, it's supposed to show a bit about the champion. When you load that page up you should be thinking, "lets have a look at this awesome new champ", not "okay so her Q does this, this is how I counter it, this is how X interacts with it, now the ult what happens when its cancelled? hmm this teaser doesn't give me much info on playing as/against her at all, it's almost as if this teaser is just meant to show a bit about the champion".

I generally read and watch the abilities via S@20 or something other than Riot's official page, for they are generally underexplained and their embedded videos take ages to load compared to normal youtube videos, and not to mention the lack of scalings and such, hell, that applies for any existing champion, I have to check them through an external source if I want to see that kind of info.

For a company that says to value clarity so much, they still have a long way to go in that regard.

I'm proud of you for actually providing constructive criticism to Riot instead of the "Rito why u dis it sucks" posts the cover the boards.

while it is disappointing to see the reveal do suck a poor demonstration of the champion its not that uncommon and the champion spotlight does tend to do a better job and clear up what the reveal didnt.
