Critical Strike needs a rework

The Deckowner··39 votes·2,286 views

Just look at all the ad champions who were used to/meant to build crit switching to armor pen builds.

GP doesn't even build IE anymore. Jhin/MF/Varus all youmuu rush. Yasuo even gone for a tank build(altho the build is nerfed).

Something need to be done to make critical strike chance asatisfying stat to build. I don't know how to, but someone must does.

MAKE CRIT GREAT AGAIN

Personally, I like the direction they've moved in, especially on champs like Ashe and Graves. Having Crit tie into their abilities in a unique way, usually to emphasize their character and themeing, is pretty neat, and really makes their auto-attacks feel special. (Ashe's slow strength and damage increases based on crit, and Graves' attacks visibly fire more bullets based on crit.)

Yeah but the issue is that it turns Ashe really into a top tier utility ADC who has a shit ton of damage once she gets IE.

And this changes how Ashe was because? She's always been a good ADC once she gets damage going just on principle of her AA slows.

"She's always been a good adc"

When I first got into this game over a year ago I remember ashe being a troll pick for ADCs because she was unbelievably bad.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

Remember when she had no DPS steroid outside of a passive that rewarded the player for not attacking? When she actually traded DPS for her utility, but now gets both?

Lock On1 votes

Which was absolutely useless outside laning phase, and even there you'd essentially have a hard time trying to cs and make use of your passive.

Ashe doesn't deal extra damage with crit though

CRITICAL SLOW: Ashe's Critical strike icon critical strikes deal no additional damage, but instead double Frost Shot Debuff Frost's Slow icon slow strength to 10 - 50 (based on level)%, decaying over the duration to its normal strength.

Critical hit concept in league needs a rework. The current mechanic boosts damage in a none interactive way that relies completely on "luck"(chance) With zero strategy, skill even brain activity. No counterplay aswell

Hinagiku338 votes

Riot has posted about this many, many times over the years:

  • Crit in League of Legends is NOT "luck-based". It is NOT even RNG. It is pseudo-RNG and there is a massive difference.

Everyone seems to think "If they only have 10% Critical Chance, then each shot only has a 10% chance to crit" and they get angry when that crit goes off because they view it as a low-chance BS thing. This is completely false if you know how the game engine works.

Using League's PRNG system (just like DOTA's), if you have 10% Critical Chance then your first auto-attack has less than 10% chance to crit and every auto-attack that does not crit raises the chance of the next auto-attack being a crit until you get a crit, then it resets. This means that having 10% Critical Chance will get you a crit roughly 1 shot in 10 pretty consistently.

Yes, just running a single Critical Chance rune will give you a guaranteed crit eventually - all the more reason the runes need to go so you actually have to invest in crit items.

  • "Why don't we make Critical Chance just double damage every X attacks???"

Because that's already how it works for one thing. Riot has stated repeatedly that they like crit not being 100% predictable because it makes interesting things happen and prevents horribly abusive gameplay.

Imagine if Gangplank could buy item 1051 then just auto-attack minions X times then Q you in the face, knowing that it was a guaranteed crit every time like clockwork. That sounds like so much fun right?

  • Critical Strike has "zero strategy, skill, or brain activity".

This applies to basic attacks in general. What "skill" does building AP to do more damage show off? Is there any mechanical skill in building tank items and relying on inherent CC/base damage to do things? There is zero micro decisions to be made on most items in the game - it's all just macro decisions of "what items let me do my job best?"

  • Critical Strike has no counter-play!

Again, neither do basic attacks in general. They are target, resourceless, and have almost no cooldown. Marksmen and Mages can even use them from a safe range.

tl;dr - Critical Strike in League is just like TwistedFate Loaded Dice passive, emphasis on "Loaded"; just because you get different amounts of gold every minion kill doesn't make it random. If you last-hit every minion in a wave you will get the same amount of gold every wave. If you buy X% Critical Chance you will get a certain number of crits every X auto-attacks but you won't know ahead of time which ones they will be. If you want to crit more often, buy more Critical Chance. Since most crit builds give 70+% it's hardly random by mid-late game.

If crit needs to be removed from laning, then remove crit component items like item 1018 item 1051 and make it only a stat on completed items.

psudo RNG is still RNG, something that you can not control, observe, predict, nor avoid.

Except... you can...

The Deckowner2 votes

Can you tell if my 1% crit rune is gonna make me crit next auto? no you can't.

50000000000000002 votes

If you got a crit recently, you probably won't crit on your next attack. If you haven't gotten a crit in a while, you have higher chance of a crit on your next attack.

NineTailedMystic2 votes

It's still RNG even if it's Pseudo-RNG. The only absolutes are 0% and 100%, where every number between these two is RNG-based. You could have 10% crit and not crit 10 times despite the weight towards increasing the % each time, or still crit someone 3 times in a row because you got lucky. It has no place in League of Legends outside of making it a % damage increase on basic attacks based on your crit chance, or changing how crit works between champions such as Ashe and Jhin.

Hinagiku331 votes

Except it's not RNG, which means it isn't really random. It's controlled by an algorithm and that algorithm can be modified however you want.

Like this: Below 50% Critical Strike Chance, the next attack after a critical strike has a 0% chance to crit. This prevents double crits when you only have 10-20% Critical Chance. Seriously though, how often has this EVER happened to anyone? It's extremely unlikely to happen since crit is actually a controlled system and not pure, random chance - it's PRNG specifically to avoid these cases.

The computer essentially rolls the dice ahead of time, so it's possible to put all kinds of rules to dictate the behavior of when you crit and how often based on how much you've actually invested in it. The only limit for making the rules healthy and fair is your own imagination and knowledge of game design.

"Has no place in League of Legends", "can only be a % damage increase on all basic attacks"

Riot has stated repeatedly why they never want this to happen and why it would be terrible for game health. Any kind of flat addition to basic attack damage functions just like AD (minus scaling abilities obviously) so every single interaction between Marksmen becomes "who has slightly higher flat damage?" and if you fall behind you lose all ability to interact with your opponent. Critical Strike is valuable because it offers variation in the absurdly boring and problematic play pattern of "right click them to death" and allows players to make comebacks and tests their skill to be ready to follow up on a crit or disengage if a trade starts going poorly.

Marshbouy3 votes

It's pseudo random every time you don't crit your chance of critting increases slightly.

Zane Zephyr9 votes

Well, MF and lucian can rush it because they can apply the stacks quickly and to multiple people (mainly via ults)

Mid lane varus has always rushed Tear/armpen as far as I remember because it's purely for his arrows to chunk people

I think the removal of crit from the TF is what made people switch from crit to armor pen for GP, especially since his barrels already have armor pen in them

I also think Jhin's recent ult nerfs made is so he doesn't get as much from building armor pen as before

Sona x Rubick2 votes

armor pene jhin isn't just for ulti rofl

last jhin game i had item 3147 item 3036 item 3031 item 3142 item 3156 item 3046 and oneshot a hecarim at 50% hp (never did that) with the 4th hit He had 190 armor and 3k hp with zz rot deadman's plank, triforce and sterak.

FantasySniper8 votes

Making it not RNG? Like, this used to be a massively supported idea back even before they released Yasuo.

All abilities that use criticals could easily be modified and left practically unchanged. Infinity Edge would increase critical total by 50% (past the cap) and interact with all criticals on abilities. Tryndamere would have the exact same amount of critical output at 35% for full fury, or 52.5% with IE passive - except now he isn't dependent on RNG. Yasuo would passively increase his critical total by 60%. IE would make that 140% or 110% more critical total depending on whether the passives would be multiplicative or additive. (I vote multiplicative coupled with a serious nerf.) Ashe, Jhin, etc would all receive the same treatment.

Jhin UItd JFK4 votes

Crit is fine imo, it takes longer to actually "ramp" up than the regular armor pen builds that are seen, and since the game is usually decided by early-mid game, having a build (aka armor pen build) that's suited to give you a better early and mid game would be popular.

The meta just simply doesn't favor it

Sahn Uzal3 votes

wowowow, let's take a step back here shall we?

Gangplank sure as hell gets an IE. the least crit reliant GP build is item 3078 item 3142 item 1001 item 3147 item 3156 item 3031 (full pen + IE) I personally dislike that build. The build most people go is item 3078 item 3142 item 1001 item 3031 item 3087 item 3036 / item 3046

But I do agree, Crit chance needs a rework.

The Deckowner1 votes

well pros usually build your first build but instead of IE they build a last whisper item, because the crit chance is very unreliable.

He never got to a last item :v

The Deckowner1 votes

idk man it's hard to find the vods:/

Sahn Uzal1 votes

the full armor pen build + IE last item is a thing because you have 20% chance to completely anihlate someone. Building full armor pen is just completely garbage later on

TFBaam1 votes

not if you get a last whisper item 20% is so unreliable in a teamfight that can decide the game. you get maybe 2 3 barrels off

Sahn Uzal1 votes

Which is why I don;t like that build, but full armor pen is just straight up garbage on GP.

The Deckowner1 votes

GP barrel 40% total amor pen+last whisper 45% bonus armor pen+youmuu maw dustblade 40 flat armor pen=consistant high damage that kills tanks as easy as squishies.

it is actually better than IE build.

Sahn Uzal1 votes

Dude, I hate RNG and have made multiple posts about how GP shouldn't be RNG reliant. If there was ANY reason to not build crit on GP, I'd fully embrace it. Not getting Crit on GP is simply a waste, sadly.

Evewynn3 votes

The only reason armor pen is being built is because the extra damage is consistent and geared better towards early-mid game. Once late game comes along crit builds will always be the highest damage, but games are usually decided by that point anyways so it's safer to just run with the armor pen.

Rito Gums2 votes

Actually crit scares me more than armor pen cause I dont main top

MunchCrunchLunch2 votes

crit is bad now huh lol

gp doesn't build crit because tf doens't give crit anymore

yasuo. because hes a melee champion. its too easy to die going with a squishy crit build.

the cpl adcs that don't build it because they spam their ults and use armor shred and ad.

varus builds armor pen because he plays like a caster in mid lane

if you think crit needs buffs. you're a retard. if anything it needs nerfs.

lucian and mf still build 1-2 crit items so they don't fall off. because if you don't have crit you do no damage against bruisers and tanks.

your argument is irrelevant. the problem in those champions kits. not crit itself. crit is broken. 250% of your ad ratio in auto attacks. lmao. with items that give you attack speed and more ad. your wasting nothing on crit .

NineTailedMystic1 votes

He never said anything about buffing or nerfing Critical Chance. It needs changed entirely. It's unreliable before 100% and takes too long to ramp up. How many times have you died because an ADC with 20% Critical Chance got it 3 times in a row? Yes it's weighted so % is less if recently crit or more if you haven't crit recently but its still mostly luck based. It's currently what lets ADCs ramp up, but again it takes too long which is why Armor Pen builds have run rampant. It's because ADCs get stronger earlier at the cost of late game damage, but they just sell the ArPen items and switch to crit because they can easily achieve 100% by that point.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

It takes too long to ramp up? Are u fucking kidding me? Two items and you already have 50% crit chance, that is disgusting and broken.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

What other reason is there to build Armor Pen builds outside of a stronger mid game compared to crit? Crit nukes squishies just as fast, it just doesn't apply to abilities.

The way I see it is that GP doesn't build IE, because Trinity Force doesn't give crit anymore.

IE alone is pretty shitty alone and because T.Force is still mandatory, he can't afford to waste more slots on purely offensive items.

Which also leads to "Tanksuo" and "Tank" Ekko, because they abuse the proc and AS. I mean Tank Yasuo was nearly not heard of before the T.Force change and Ekko never built it either.

one of the problems with changing crit is that how will it affect AniviaKarthus Ryze Vladimir and there may be one more these guys have magic crit and with out it, the spell (Karthus single target Q, vlad third Q, ryse Q on target with flux, anivia E on target with frost) is little more then an AA. their crit isnt RNG or iteam based but it still is crit go into a match with Anivia and Lucian even befor he stopped building crit iteams Anivia would have the larger crit according to the post game lobby.

NineTailedMystic1 votes

Pretty sure they changed how their 'magic crit' works back when it was discovered that Randuin's reduced it.

Meep Man1 votes

The real question is whether armor penetration is too strong or is critical strike too weak?

Mandang01 votes

Pleasantly surprised that this isn't just another RNG rant :D.

As for the matter of "fixing" crit - I think Riot honestly has a complicated problem on their hands. I agree with Riot's effort to make IE unattractive as a first item, as it's one of the best late items. However, because IE is very expensive, dependent on other crit/attack speed items, and because those crit/attack speed items suck to rush, it makes the build very sensitive to match length. That's not only the time when the match ends, but it's also the time when the game starts becoming decided/snowballed - which makes the pen build so attractive as ADC "comes online" much earlier.

Also worth noting is how much defensive itemization exists solely to counter autoattackers (Ninja Tabi % reduction, Warden/Frozen Heart %attack speed reduction, and Randuin's %crit reduction). Honestly, autoattacking is one of the most dangerous ways to deal damage because you need to remain at risk for a prolonged period of time (as opposed to burst damage), and the reward is not always worth it (single target damage from glassy champions with low utility).

Riot could fix it by slowing down the earlygame (no first tower gold, nerf drags, buff towers), but I doubt that'll happen. Item-wise, they could make the build-up to IE/RH less punishing or more flexible (but, again, I'd want to avoid a situation when IE is both the best first and best lategame ADC item). Maybe make crit more accessible on (cheaper?) items without gimmicks (all zeal upgrades) and also on good first items that aren't IE. That way you could start with an AD item that has crit, build your crit/attack speed item 2nd, then build IE late as intended, but get a bigger payoff at that time. Alternatively, they could nerf the penetration items (to be fair, I think Ghostblade probably deserves a nerf). Lastly (and I think this is bigger than most think), Riot can rebalance the champions themselves. Only a few ADCs actually use the pen build particularly well, and Jhin in particular seems to be a bit too strong at the moment.

Oh well, just my 2 cents. Hope this post generates some good discussion because I really appreciate the perspective for a change.

The Deckowner1 votes

well it's gameplay board, and you know what that means? 60% replies "you fucking suck stop crying you little bitch" 35% replies "yeah i agree" only 5% of relies are worth reading tbh.

SociopathFriend1 votes

GP doesn't need crit because his barrels will do TONS of damage without it. So he can build much more bruiser and live longer and deal similar damage. ADCs rush Youmuu because it's cheaper and has an active that helps them more. Crit builds will still outdamage pen builds late-game. Don't forget that quite a bit of LoL players build stuff purely because a pro or Youtuber did so- not because they know better.

One thing is that all current crit items are... I'm gonna go with "boring". item 3508 item 3031 item 3046 item 3094 item 3085 item 3087 No actives- and precious little passive effects either- you get the odd lightning bolt and the extra shots from Runaan's or a little more range on the revolver. Technically I don't think PD should even count in this list- people build that almost exclusively for the passive- not the crit.

Now look at pen items item 3147 item 3156 item 3142 item 3071 item 3035 An active, a passive that's more than just extra damage, a shield that helps against magic damage, and a movespeed buff for when you attack. More options- more utility- more uses.
