How is Soraka going to help secure Morde kills? I'm not seeing it.

Morde/Soraka would be a very passive lane that has to farm under their tower. W encourages early game initiators who can turn on at level 1, 3, and 4 while also wanting to be in the middle of a fight. Healers seem like a missed opportunity when you have the opportunity to dive with Morde level 2/ Support level 1, Morde level 5 / Support level 3, and Morde level 6 / Support level 4. Sona may be the exception as her speed buff meshes with Morde's speed buff.

Healers aren't about playing passively, they are about allowing your carry to play more aggressively known that they have heals to fall back on. They can make bad trades and ignore poke and still come out alive.

One of the ways Morde was kept in check is that if he spammed his spells too hard, he'd be killing himself. With a healer next to him at all times, that's much less of a problem. It might even make forgoing spellvamp in favor of a more powerful item more appealing. The healer can also heal off the AAs the ADC will likely throw at him in abuse of his short range.
