Especially ones without travel direction like Lulu, Malz, Vlad, zed, etc.

Is it based on where the champion is, the direction of the projectile/effect, etc?

If I start an ability from behind him and end up in front of him, does it nullify the effect of a debuff/dot/ability?

It's based on where the champion is, like Braum's.

You can see here, he blocks Karthus's ultimate because he's facing the direction Karthus is standing. (I linked to the spot in the video where it happens)
