The issue with MR items is that they're most effective vs. burst.

"Wtf how does that make sense?"

Let's look at armor items. It's essentially the same thing in reverse. Sure you have armor which counters both physical burst and DPS, but all the items are geared toward anti-DPS.

Thornmail - returns AA damage FH - slows AS

Only one armor item is geared toward anti-bursting, and that's GA.

With MR, you have a very different scenario.

Banshee's - blocks one spell. More effective vs. burst than constant DPS. Merc Treads - most burst mages need to lock you in place for their burst. DPS mages are still effected by this but less so because they're more capable of constantly reapplying slows like Azir Q, Orianna's R, hell even Cassiopeia with her R is still fine because of Rylai's reapplications. Hexdrinker - I don't need to explain this one. Spirit Visage is the closest you have and with Morello's not being used nearly as much anymore there's less incentive to try burst down sustainers low enough to apply Grevious Wounds. Plus, the sustain works equally well vs. burst and DPS.

If you've noticed, most of the midlaners pros love to play are Lux, LeBlanc, and DPS mids. DPS means TF (yes he's bursty. No he's not technically a burst mage, he just CC locks you to death like Orianna), Orianna, Azir, Lissandra, and 70% of Corki's damage output.

tl;dr if you wanna make MR items more effective, make one geared for fighting DPS mages, not bursters, who already have plenty of counter items.

The number of real dps mage in the game is very small and they are generally in a bad spot. Cassiopeia Karthus Azir Swain Tf played for his map pressure and he is more burst than dps, Lissandra is clearly a burst mage who play for her cc, Ori played rarely but if picked she played because of her versatility, she is not a dps mage. Creating an anti-ap dps item right now would make a weak class even weaker. They should just finally tweak maw and ap champs will be fine

The real number of DPS mages have been nerfed into oblivion because they were too problematic to deal with. Making an item like this and then fixing AP items + Hexdrinker will solve those issues and let them be healthier.

in a solo lane he is burst but in a teamfight he is mostly dps towards the nearest squishy

Actually most of the AP mids getting played right now are utility centric, not damage centric.

Out of the APs you mentioned all of them except Azir and LB are played for their utility. LB is a burst based mid, but that really doesn't matter since the people she burst can't normally itemise heavily against her. Azir is a DPS mid but he's also the only one really seeing play.

TF is a utility mage, his utility is being able to instantly point and click stun anyone from 4000 range. This is an incredible lockdown that makes up for his lack of damage. I don't feel the need to justify Ori or Liss, and you can also add Lulu and maybe even Vik as well. Cassiopeia is not seeing pro play, I can honestly say I've not seen her at all and I watch every KR game and some EU games.

You also mentioned Corki, who is generally the champ (alongside Azir) who you actually pick for a magic DPS champ.

I'd say the problem right now is more AP items. They're too expensive. How am I meant to play Syndra when the enemy can just pick Zed and force me to rush a truly craptacular item as a first item?

Bump.

I'm just throwing out ideas here but here's something.

Magic resist item - when hit by magic damage, either the user gains (x value) of MR or gives a debuff causing the person dealing damage to deal (x%) less damage to the wearer or to the team for 4 seconds (stacks 4-5 times).

Then buff APs and we good to go.

Wow, I actually didn't think of it this way. Nice take on the situation dude. I'll think about it the next time I get salty when Zed keeps surviving Syndra ult, or play someone else for now.

Cannot wait for the mage rework

Or maybe just stop having mr be cheaper than armor.

you are totally right

but the true sad thing is

even though armor is more geared towards anti dps FH Thornmail Randuins, It still isnt really doing anything i mean when a Caitlyn with 208 ad crits for 1945 damage and whilst doing so ignores half your armor because armorpen well you get the point.

[Spirit Visage] sustain works equally well vs. burst and DPS.

What? No it doesn't. Burst doesn't give you time to regenerate.

Anyway, most magic damage is ability-based, and most physical damage is autoattack-based. DPS mages are rare, and typically heavily mana-gated. In return, they don't get hard countered by Banshee's Veil, and you can't forcibly raise their cooldowns like you can do to an autoattacker. But it is absurd to claim that BV or Spirit Visage won't protect you. All MR protects against all magic damage. On the other hand, If you want a single item that lets you facetank a fed Cassiopeia, that will never exist.
