Why don't we have more items and/or abilities that reduce attack speed?

Currently, we have only a very few items (item 3143 item 3110) and abilities (Anivia Darius Malphite Nasus Nunu) that are capable of reducing the enemy's attack speed. We also have summoner 3.

Still, why don't we have more? Is that because they are too powerful and crippling against AD champions?

Because with the way that AD champions are currently, I feel that more attack speed slows would solve or at least mitigate the problem. Let me explain: I had the idea to create this thread when I was reading a thread about Vayne. She has a powerful on-hit effect that deals true damage based on the enemy's max health. This is almost impossible to counter, with the only actual counter being attack speed slows (not stacking health is not pratical since then you will die quickly to enemy's burst). If we had more attack speed slows, Vayne wouldn't be as powerful as she currently is. Attack speed slows would also help in countering other ADCs. This would actually allow Riot to "buff" them in many interesting ways and give them more items, even ones that could possibly counter attack speed slows.

I am on opinion that the only reason not to add more attack speed slows is because it would be too crippling to AD champions. It would be a good way to balance champions such as Vayne, or Jax, or Irelia, Kalista, Yasuo, Jinx, Fizz, Kayle, Azir, Gnar, or many other champions that are reliant on attack speed. On other hand, it could also have the side effect of leaving them completely useless. On another hand, however, attack speed slows are useless against caster champions, especially AP ones such as Chogath Vladimir Annie Ahri.

Unfortunately attack speed slows have the same problem as silence, in that it is extremely crippling against some champions, but useless against others. I am still thinking whether we could have more abilities and items that slow attack speed. Gragas' barrel used to have that effect before his rework. I don't know why it was removed. However, LeeSin' attack speed slow was removed for a good reason.

Vayne is an extremely healthy spot right now, and most (80%+) of her damage is physical (instead of true) anyway.

The problem with AS slows is, the AS fighters, ADC, and other AS focused champs are also countered by Armor. Frozen heart can cut physical damage in half with it's 100 Armor. But then the 15% AS slow, reduces their DPS by 15% again. Like you said, they would make AD's too harsh against AD's yet AP/AS Really arn't as strong as AD/AS, as they never crit. So you need less counters to AP/AS.

Frozen heart and Randuins over is Sufficient to Take the edge off if the ADC or AS fighter gets fed. However, if your truly need an item to counter them, get thornmail.

Why don't we have more items and/or abilities that reduce attack speed?

Those disproportionately hurt ~half the AD champions in the game, to the point any AD that essentially completely bypasses it has a leg-up on the compatition.

If you look at seasons 1, 2, and 3: the best marksman essentially ignored %AS slows entirely. Corki EzrealGraves Lucian was even shaping up to be the best marksman for season 4. Not that %AS slows don't hit their damage somewhat - but with amazing ability damage, %AS slows don't do much against them.

Anyways - if Riot had a solid pattern for champions with a heavy reliance on %AS like Vayne Caitlyn Tryndamere Shyvana Trundle Aatrox Ashe where a weakness to %AS slows meant something and was traded for something, then %AS slows could be more prevalent.

But as the game has grown over the years? %AS slows have largely atrophied in their role of being a sort of tertiary defensive modifier beyond health and armor.

So now we have a really solid %HP increase item for tank-junglers to fulfill a tertiary defensive scaler - one that's actually useful vs. a wide range of champions, over being a random obstacle to some AD champions for no real reason. Which lead to a "tank meta" and resurgence in a solid number of tanky champions.

So - tanks aren't hurting for defensive options, and %AS slows, at least in past-season quantities, tended to disproportionately hurt a wide range of AD champions for no real reason.

As for dealing with Vayne

LoL is a game with strategy elements to it. You can't fall back on the same strategy to deal with every situation. Otherwise there wouldn't be a strategic element.

Some abilities have 100% accuracy and cannot be dodged. Some abilities apply CC in a way that's unaffected by Tenacity/QSS Some abilities cannot be counter-built. Some champions will be faster than you. Some champions will out-range you. Some champions will be beefier than you.

The way to win with strategy isn't to find your opponent's strong points and attempt to out-muscle them in those areas. It's to find their weaknesses and exploit them with your respective strengths.

Vayne's strength is that if she maintains 550 range from her opponent and survives long enough while being able to continuously auto-attack, she will do meaningful damage and kill them. There are a lot of things that can go wrong for Vayne there, you don't need counter-building. She's not exactly on the same level as Blue-Build Ezreal in terms of mobility, CC, or range in making a wide range counter-plays a great difficulty.
