Hey guys, let's stop calling bad champions "Cancerous", ok?

DrProfVibeCheck··24 votes·1,443 views

Thats like comparing a firecracker to a ballistic missile.

Cancer is deadly ailment that causes the deaths of many, many people due to its difficulty to cure.

A badly designed champion just causes you an inconvience in a GAME.

I know its supposed to be a hyperbole, but many people have cancer, and a "broken" champion is nothing to them.

Let's think up of other adjectives that mean bad, annoying, and/or just plain stupid, shall we?: -aggravating -bothersome -vexatious -irritating -doltish -ludicrous -moronic -nonsensical There are many words out there, just open up a thesaurus, will you? Thanks guys.

You seriously need to stop being so sensitive. Then again I'm trying to say that in the community where calling someone "irritating", "doltish", or "moronic" in game is worth getting banned for

"an evil or destructive practice or phenomenon that is hard to contain or eradicate. 'racism is a cancer sweeping across Europe'" - Google definition

People are immediately assuming that we're talking about the disease and that's their problem, not ours.

now people are getting offended by 'cancer'

People get offended by many things, some more serious than others. There are real people with real problems out there, and I don't think it is proper to use a term to describe their pain for describing our discomfort.

WyldeFyres8 votes

I take it you yourself have never had cancer based on your wording? I only ask because it would be interesting to have an opinion on this from someone who actually has had cancer.

Not my problem that you get offended, 21st century and people still get offended by words used on a forum? come on.

You know whats funny? One of my best friends is a Leukemia survivor. You know what else is funny? He doesn't care when people say something is "cancer". Not even a little. It does not bother him one bit. At all. Zero. Nilch. Nada.

So how about feeling the need to put words in these people's mouths, you let them express their opinion themselves? Tell me what exactly gives you the right to speak on behalf of these people? Because you feel the need to pointlessly white-knight SJW on the internet?

"I'm not racist, I have a black friend!"

His argument may be right or wrong; your argument is definitely wrong.

The definition of the word cancer includes more than just the disease cancer. I honestly feel you're being too sensitive about this. It would be like if I (someone who is legally blind) became offended at people using the word blind as hyperbole. It isn't meant to insult me or make light of my condition, much like how people use "cancerous" to describe something that is hard to deal with and very negatively affects balance.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

I am just curious, no offense intended... but how does someone who is legally blind get involved in League of Legends?

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

I believe you can use audio queues and there's like special patches and stuff to do this. Also, they said legally blind so I'm assuming their eyesight is just so bad it's considered blind, might be using really powerful glasses.

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Oooh, that would make sense. Very cool!

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

Yeah :3 I can't speak for the person themselves, but I've had a few friends who were legally blind get into World of Warcraft and such. It's more of an inconvenience than a full on disablement. My eyesight is really bad but not legally blind kind of bad, so glasses fix most of it. I just can't stare at screens too bright for too long, so everything is set to super dim for my setup xD

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Good to know :)

If you have trouble with bright screens you might like f.lux :D It's a program that allows you to dim screens beyond their normal brightness range!

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

Oh really? Do you have a link? My monitor is lowest brightness but I still get constant headaches for playing more than 1 game without a break :P

HalcyonDweller2 votes

That sucks! I can't imagine how awful that must feel :(

Umm, it pops up with a quick google or bing search of "flux".

Well worth your time, it has a night mode where it uses a tinting effect to reduce the kind of light that messes with your circadian rythms. And there's a special feature you can enable that allows you to dim the screen by pressing alt+page-down, or increase brightness by pressing alt+page-up

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

I'm gonna download that right now! Thanks man ^-^ and yeah it does suck, I can't play WoW like I used to either, but hopefully this changes that :D

HalcyonDweller2 votes

Glad I could help :) Don't let your newfound freedom keep you from enjoying other things in life ;)

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

Thanks :D

WyldeFyres2 votes

Dead on with how it works for me.

ModAttysu The Poro2 votes

Yay! I was hoping I didn't totally offend you in saying how something worked when it wasn't like that xD

Yeah, it does sound better that way.

Cancer: an evil or destructive practice or phenomenon that is hard to contain or eradicate.

Stop being so damn touchy about everything, Cancer doesn't necessarily mean the disease.

DrProfVibeCheck5 votes

What I am trying to say is to put things into perspective.

A badly designed champion is NO WHERE NEAR evil enough to be called cancer. It causes you an inconvenience to you WITHIN A VIDEO GAME MEANT FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES.

You know what IS evil enough to call cancer? -Racism -Prejudice -Violence

I may sound like a freakin hippie, but the connotation of the word "cancer" is basically overkill in describing an annoyance. "Oh, these cancerous flies always buzz in my damn face" "These long lines at the DMV are cancerous!" "They sold out of the movie i wanted to watch? CANCER!!!" Some examples.

Cancerous has more meaning than the disease.

Jesus Died 4 You4 votes

Hey guys can we stop using the term "nuked" or "blown up"? My grandfather died in Hiroshima and now I cry on the forums about it even though I know that me complaining about it won't change anything.

Sairentosutoka4 votes

Thats kinda you know the point cancer is something terrible and to call a champion cancer inducing is a means of describing how bad it is... no one is undermining cancer. grow up

A Loyal Support3 votes

nah, cancerous sounds better. those champs are to the game as cancer is to real life.

But they are cancer, for the game itself, not the players. Also cancer doesnt always mean the actual disease but I think you already know that lol.

It's a figure of speech. I held my father's hand as he died of pancreatic cancer three years ago this month, and I've never been offended by the word being used to describe something other than the illness. Maybe it's just me, but I don't see it as that big of a deal.

Hoping that someone else GETS cancer though, that's just sickening.

Ive been diagnosed with terminal skin cancer, and it wouldn't be so bad if I could just have ONE LAST SERIES OF BALANCED MATCHES!

I don't really care if my words on the internet hurt someone. I'm not going to go out of my way to call someone a name or anything or tell them to kill themselves, but seriously? Getting offended by the word cancer is ridiculous.
