There's a lot of ways to make tanks stand out from each other more
Riot talked about comparing a lot of current tanks to Amumu, in that they jump on you and just sort of radiate AoE damage. And this is fairly true; most tanks don't really put a lot of thought into their spells beyond "dump my CCs as often as possible" and there's not really much to do against most of them besides just not being near them. I made a thread about making their power curves more variable from each other, so that even similar kits might be tweaked to shine at different stages, but there's two more things I can think of that Riot could do with some tanks to make them more satisfying to play as and more fair to play against.
More deliberate, telegraphed spells
I would not be surprised if Sion was used as a model for Vanguards for exactly this reason. He has very strong, powerful spells, and on low cooldowns, but they're very visible and you can play against them. Things that require some aim, things that charge up to full effectiveness, stuff like that that feels good to land, and fair to get hit by. I don't think ALL tanks should be like this; there's great value in reliability. But it's worth considering.
Innate threat vs external threat
Think of this as the difference between Darius and Illaoi. Or Tryndamere and Gangplank. For the former in each case, you only have to worry about them and themselves; Darius and Tryndamere only exert direct influence around themselves, and can't manipulate that; you play around their positioning alone, and they are very potent if they get you in their range but can't do anything otherwise. They have innate threat. But for Illaoi and Gangplank, their bodies are the least of you concerns; you're more occupied with the tentacles spawning all over the lane, you're constantly moving around to make sure GP can't nuke you with a triple barrel. Where they might not be as powerful in melee range ( Illaoi ult notwithstanding ), they exert external threat where they have a much larger sphere of influence, and make you play around their ability to extend how far they can hit you from.
But we don't have a tank that exerts primarily external threat; every single one of them has their worth tied to being around themselves, save for a few skillshots and Maokai's saplings. I don't think this is something that can be tackled in a class update as much as it'd be more worthy of a new champion, but I think it would be very interesting to see regardless.
Tell me what you think.
