Sion a Dead Rework!?

So, I've been seeing a lot about this recently, and I have to ask why people keep saying this? I get it, his passive is bad if you're in lane (because, hey, you're not supposed to die, and if you don't your passive does nothing, so... meh), his shield has been nerfed, and he has a kit full of slightly unreliable skill shots. Even so, why do people think he's bad all of a sudden?

But is he bad?

Ok, so I'm going to get the two biggest complaints out of the way. One: His ult

Seriously? His ult!? This thing destroys people and is an amazing initiate! It puts you directly in front of your team (where you should be), you can't be cc'd out of it, can't be interrupted, and anyone without a dash, or the proper reflexes to you their dash is going to get WRECKED when you come mowing down the lane. Get out of the way? No one does! Some people complain about it being hard to land. Even so, you can use this to force people to move the way you want, if you have the time to learn how to use him. That, or you could just burn a dash, flash, or other potentially long-cooldown abilities. Not to mention the huge payoff if you land this thing.

Secondly, his passive.

I get it, it's garbage in lane. Let's face facts. This is a passive for teamfights, and I personally love it as a passive for a tank. You become super dangerous after you die. You do so much damage. Each hit does tons of %health damage. People will say he's kitable, but that's the point. You can use this as a way to herd people away from your team, or towards it. That, or you punish them by beating the tar out of them. Simple. Besides, buy a frozen mallet on this guy, and you can stick to enemies in your passive state long enough to 100-0 a squishy target as long as you don't get cc'd or bursted down. Even then, they wasted their spells on you, so if the fight is still going that's some cooldowns blown on you. You're STILL doing your job, even though you died. Some people say you can't do enough when undead, but I say fuck it, it's a freebie. Just take what you can get instead of the grey screen.

Third, the nerfs on his shield

Ok, I get it. I jungled Sion for a while directly after his rework, and I know his clears aren't as good these days. In lane, his shield is easily melted off before you can pop it, but that's a %health shield that STACKS YOUR HEALTH. People forget that this skill makes Sion unique and pretty strong in the bruiser meta. When you farm, you get permanent health stacks. It's not what it used to be, but let's face facts... his shield was pretty busted. Do I agree that this was the best way to fix him? No, but until the RITO Gods decide to face the fact that they fucked him up, they'll fix it some other way. In the meantime, his shield is another punishment tool in lane and in team fights. Melt it off, or take %health damage. To squishy carries in teamfights, this skill is scary. If he makes it into the back line and you can't melt this thing, it's going to hurt. A lot. If you focus him, you're not focusing the enemy carries. If you don't, you get punished hard for it. Not to mention the health stack means that he can get 4000, 5000, even 6000 health before the game is over. That's a lot of damage to use titanic hydra with. The passive burn is pretty low, but when you use the active on the new hydra, it does TEN PERCENT OF YOUR MAX HP. IN A CONE. If you've built correctly, you should be a huge threat in team fights late game.

Not to mention, a lot of people don't like his q for some reason, and think that the nerfs to his e are the last straw, all they need to not want to play Sion anymore. These skills lead to cheesy plays all the time in solo q. People sometimes don't expect him to be hiding in a bush, waiting for them to walk into his q. Now that e is less spammable, maybe you can think before using it? It's just a suggestion. You know, in a game about making good decisions and thinking things through.

So, what do you guys think? Am I right that people are complaining over nothing? Or am I wrong and just some bronze hack that sucks at this game?

Basically a lot of people think "If I don't see this in LCS regularly, it must not be any good and needs buffs". This is very poor reasoning, but it's a pervasive train of thought in any game that needs regular balancing.

I even see youtubers that preach the mantra that "everything goes in solo q" say that Sion is bad.

TiP Mush is playing Sion jungle right now if you want to spectate him.

LCS don't use Sion the way they weren't using Veigar; too unreliable.

He has great CC and utility, but everything is telegraphed and not flashy enough. If you can overcome that and land everything, and get follow up, he's good. But I think they kinda went overboard on him

Yeah, I have to admit you're right about the flashiness. After all, why do you think Veigar was such a surprise in the LCS? He's comparatively boring to other champions, even back when his wall was instant cast. It's interesting, but it's not like Yasuo dashing around everywhere, or Vayne tumbling and stunning someone on a bit of wall. Even Darius and Garen somehow outshine him, because Darius has the ability to dunk people with his ult (which is more exciting) and Garen has his big true damage ult.

Yeah, they're more consistent, but honestly I feel like the pros could use Sion much better than the average player. I would think he would get more play there because his abilities are pretty high-risk, high-reward like a lot of popular picks in the LCS. Not to mention if you could coordinate your team to play mind games with the enemy and force them to walk into a fully charged Sion ult? That would make the crowd go nuts. Or, at least, I would. XD

I just played him. He's still tanky as fuck. He still has shit tons of CC. He still destroys anyone who gets hit by full charge Q. Only noticable difference is much higher mana cost. But it's menagable

I think Sion is in an okay spot. One thing that would probably get him more play is to increase the turn rate and acceleration of his ultimate. Landing an R is devastating because it's basically a guaranteed Q as long as the R has a bit of time to wind up.

Yeah, I think he could use a small buff in some way to make up for all the nerfs... he isn't the strongest pick for top lane like he was on launch. They made him a little too easy to deal with, and fixing his ult a bit would be helpful in keeping people actually playing him. I mean, recently I picked him jungle and my adc when afk because Sion wasn't meta and they thought he was too weak of a pick in the junlge to actually be able to win the game with. Despite the fact that he has ungodly clear and sustain in the jungle, cc for days, an AoE knockup and stun, that devastating ult (it's pretty damning even if done at close range), and he gets so tanky after just a few items and a bunch of farm... not to mention he doesn't even need kills to get tanky, because he gets 10 health stacks on kill OR assist.

How is Sion not flashy? Running halfway across the map and hitting a carry, knocking them up in the air and exploding all over them isn't flashy? I don't know what is.

I think the real problem is that, if you miss a Sion ult (which is hard to land at long distance in the LCS because everyone has MUCH better vision and can see you coming) you look really silly. Not to mention that his skills aren't easy to land, which makes him really inconsistent. It's partly why Veigar was such a surprise. His kit is a lot more boring, but he's just as unreliable. Except for zoning purposes, he might as well only have 2 skills, Q and R, because the others will rarely ever land and will usually only be useful for zoning people out.
