How to generic build a midlaner in a few easy steps

Rock MD··3 votes·483 views

I've been playing a lot of games recently with people who don't know how to build (most upsetting of which was against a Luden's -> Athene's rush Ziggs), so I've decided to do a very generic run through for builds so people know what they need.

So here's how you build in a few easy steps.

Step 1: buy Doran's, Flask for Fizz, Mana Crystal for Ryze, Boots for Kat/Akali, and Long Sword or Doran's Blade for ADs.

Step 2: Assess the amount of gold you have on first back. This is super important.

Step 3: Your core item is your manalessness item. Manaless champions, Jayce, Azir, and Lissandra can skip this step. You want to start building this ASAP because it gives you the most kit cohesiveness and lane presence because 2 ~250 damage Q's are stronger than 10% CDR and 18 damage (0.6 AP ratio w/ a 30 AP item like Codex). This is items like Lost Chapter or Tear.

Step 4: Consider your defenses and how necessary they are vs. your opponent. Consider what would happen if you came back to lane with a Lost Chapter. Would their lane presence or dual lane presence (how oppressive would they be if the jungler ganked and/or tower dived). If they're too much of a threat, buy a defense item first.

Step 5: Don't finish Maw/Abyssal/Zhonya's unless you REALLY need to. Buy your strongest item. Youmuu's is amazing. Morellonomicon is amazing. Rylai's (only on Viktor and Cassiopeia rushes) are amazing.

Step 6: Finish your defense item now. The extra CDR/armor pen is worth it now that you won't go OOM trying to abuse it.

Step 7: If you can use it, and you like drawn out fights, get yourself a Rylai's.

Step 8: Round out your build with your main damage items unless you get into a really odd super situational spot (needing Zhonya's for Karthus or Vi ults, Visage if you're Vlad).

Step 9: Buy whatever last item or two you need.

Step 10 (optional): Post on this thread that you tried this method and you didn't win, thus I'm incompetent.

One thing for me, is I never really know what to do if I manage 1250+ gold on my first back.

Lost chapter + boots?

or a Needlessly large rod?

Back before AP items were reworked, if my first back had 1600+ I always bought the needlessly large rod. It was simply too expensive to not buy when you had the chance. Now 1250 is a lot more affordable, but there are still a good number of games where you just constantly have to back with 900-1200 gold and just can't quite afford it when you really want it. Also if I get a NLR early I can win some pretty hard trades and force my opponent out of lane, push and back, and buy that other item without losing a wave - awesome!

The downside is that if I miss a spell or two, suddenly I'm OOM in lane well before I want to back. With good last hitting and Doran's ring I can often get back mana and do okay, but I've given up my advantage in lane.

So it's a tough choice. Games where I take Lost Chapter seem to work better though - so you're probably right.

Not necessarily. Sometimes you need the Negatron first because you're laning against LeBlanc or a Zac + (insert any AP mid with a 1 cc kill combo).

LeBlanc has a poke range of about 1800 units, or two distortions and a Q+E. The Q+E alone will deal a quarter of your health early on, if she lands her R distortion on you as well that number jumps to easily 60% of your health. Unless you're farming from well out of that range or can trade with her when she gets into range (which isn't easy for a lot of champions, especially when the LeBlanc is competent), you simply need a Negatron Cloak.

Another combo in which it's necessary is, again, Zac + Orianna because that shit can easily tower dive you at level 6 with little repercussion minus a solid countergank.

How does that even...?

Ok, let me spell it out for you.

If LeBlanc uses her combo on you, and you didn't trade with her, you can push out the lane all you like, but you're not magically going to regen 50% of your health. You are now at a health disadvantage and she can easily combo you for the rest of your life or have her jungler gank you and force a summoner spell CD.

That is why you get a Negatron.

Also, if/when you push hard into her your only option is to back or be a fantastic ganking champion and get good roams because you can be damn sure she'll freeze by her tower and that's the last place you need to be as a mage.

As a Karthus Player, I generally start with The Dark Seal for the extra potion healing, and get the refillable potion to upgrade to corrupting potion first back along with tear. Hope this helps anyone

If you are a mage you want to spam combos sooner to give more harass, pressure and waveclear so you can go roam. Damage is cool but that is a second or even third item depending on how game is. You want to go item 3165 ASAP then like item 3285 or item 3089 i prefer ludens because of movespeed for roams and extra burst but if you are fed get deathcap. Im confused though are you saying "manaless Item" like go damage or go mana? You shouldnt be going athens on Ziggs either since the change its not worth it get morrello then rush abby or banshees if you want to but i dont recommend it.
