Shen needs your support!

Greetings all, I'm writing this to share my opinion on shen. I love the idea of his kit, and him as a champion.. his lore and everything is awesome too! He's A FREAKING NINJA! However.. I feel like he could use a bit of a touch up.. First off his energy costs are too damn high.. no other champ that I can think of gets punished so hard for missing an ability! I'm referring ofcourse to shen's Feint ability.. If he misses it not only is he left way out of position like really bad.. but he can't even do a full rotation of his abilities.. even if he hits one person with it (say in a 1v1 scenario) He can still barely get off a full rotation. Now now I understand that he has a mechanic aside from his dash to get back energy.. but to be honest it sucks imo.. akali get's more energy back level 1 than shen (20 for triggering her mark on her q "mark of the assassin") but even without that she can still do an entire rotation with energy to spare, same with Zed LeeSin (except for the second casts on lee sin's spells, but due to his energy regain mechanic that's possible) as well as Kennen, hell zed can almost do two full ability rotations with his energy regain mechanic). I Understand that shen shines in team fights and that's awesome! But I still feel like he needs some love for his 1v1 skirmishes as missing his taunt punishing so hard. Maybe lowering his energy cost for rotation to like 170 atleast and possibly have his passive energy regain mechanic restore the same as akali triggering a q mark.. or perhaps leave it how it is and increase it to akali's if he marks a target with his q (vorpal blade) first.. It would be a buff.. but at this point it feels more quality of life. At this point I honestly feel like he may need a rework in general(nothing super major).. he's not picked very often anymore and even though this is the "tank meta".. there are just many better picks. Leave your feedback below, I'm interested to see what other's think of shen, my post in general, and what could be done to put shen in a healthier state (aside from bringing back this little beauty(instert atma's impaler here)). Thank you for reading! :)

I feel like Shen's kit is just kinda derpy. He's supposed to be a ninja, but he deals next to no damage and is just a really derpy high sustain bruiser with little to no damage scaling with his build. If they could rework his kit do do damage like you're building Lightning Shen without needing all of those items, that'd be extremely cool. Right now, the most coherent part of his kit is his ultimate and E. Riot talked about turning him into a tank that specializes in completely taking squishies out of a team fight (compared to Garen who just DEMACIAAAAAS them to death). They thought it was a cool idea, but they were worried about the utility it would give Shen because of his ultimate, which is already the reason why he's in this state.

I'd like to see a Sion level rework of Shen. I feel like Lee sin is everything Shen SHOULD have been, while Lee should have had Shen's kit. I think Shen should be a late game bruiser rather than a full tank. I also think he should have ad, not ap, scaling on his skills.

Agreed, Look at sion, he can be built full tank or he can be built bruiser.. The only thing shen can do is build items.. But that's his problem, champions shouldn't have only one type of build thats considered viable

Agreed!

Right now he's still considered viable because of his ult. Which is why he's considered a niche pick by many If you were to buff him you'd have to address the amount of utility he has to offer with his ult.

I would suggest nerfing Shen's global ult to allow for the many shen buff requests

Give his ult two ranges. One with pantheon ult range and one global. Global ult would have a 45 seconds or so longer cool down. Now that his ult is dealt with you can adjust his kit to make him better at trading top lane or clear faster in jungle. Or have better energy management etc..

Taunt:http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/KL0NuLWE-possible-fix-for-shen-taunt-width Feint: http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/5ARTxLW5-can-shens-w-scale-by-max-health-please?comment=0004 http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/gameplay-balance/12h9HwVK-shen-feint-and-ki-strike-interaction

A buff to rageblade would be nice imo. Looking forward to trying the abyssal on pbe if a version of it ever makes it to live.

Jungle Shen is horrible. I'm sorry, it is. Your impact is so detrimentally low that it's completely pointless. His counterganks have such a massive cooldown and still aren't likely to end with a kill. Non-ultimate ganks are a joke. Short-lived CC with nearly no damage.

Clear times are poor, even for a tank. Most slow clearers, many of which are tanks, have AoE damage to help their clears. Shen does not, and has only two skills that actually helps him clear the jungle, and only one of those deals damage.

His sustain is great, moving on.

His scaling is poor. Tanks in teamfights always have something in their kit that gives the enemy team a reason to target them, otherwise they get ignored. Shen has a long cooldown E that costs a majority of his Energy, and can then be safely ignored for a considerable amount of time. Compare this to Nautilus who can snare all 5 enemies using only AAs, has AoE slows, has an AoE knock-up ultimate from a safe distance, has a hook and his W gives him damage. You can't just ignore him, because all of that demands attention. Shen lacks a meaningful attention-getter. All he can do is splitpush and R in. Woo hoo. A low damage tank splitpusher. Yippie.

Too many superior picks in the end leaves Shen a really pointless choice for the jungle. Too many weaknesses and not enough meaningful strengths. You're gimping yourself by picking him in the jungle role.

Jungle Shen is horrible.

I play him jungle for fun mostly. with cinderhulk + jungle masteries his clear isn't half bad. I do think he has potential and those suggested changes could help him. For example small things like giving him the ability to apply ki strike when feint is up when you have 1 sec left still on its cooldown since its supposed to shave two seconds off. would help him clear better and have energy left over sooner in case of invade etc. if feint gave him armor/mr (sort of like garen gets from his w) he could itemize more hp early as well. See the links i posted in previous post for more info. Or even something like shyvana has in the jungle (her w does extra damage to jungle camps) just giving his kistrike 20% more dmg to jungle camps would put him in a good spot.

I've had higher impact in games as jungle garen.. It sucks but that's just the way it is.. shen needs trailblazer for sub-par clears and if you try taking chilling smite for ganks, good luck clearing your jungle this year..

I've been a huge fan of Shen for a long time, but I know even with a duo queue partner to stay far away with ranked with him. I have more fun playing him than any other champion, but he has too may glaring flaws with damage, energy cost, cooldown, and for some unknown reason NO scaling magic resist per level. It's interesting that in the mobility tank meta we're in that the S3 quintessential mobility tank is so outdated. Please at lease give him a real W.

The funny part about this is... is that Akali is tankier from base stats than shen.. higher lvl 1 hp.. higher level 18 hp, higher level 1 armor..oh and scaling magic resist! Shen has more armor than Akali at level 18... 7.8 more armor... Also why the hell is shen so slow?! I Actually like LilxPaprika's idea for giving him bonus resists like garen.. but as he stands you're right he has so many weak points both in his kit as well as even his base stats.. rito either buff his damage like hell and call him an assassin or actually make him A TANK... I'd prefer the second one.

EmollientNut01 votes

Almost every fighter in the game has higher base stats than Shen. And I get that you're really not supposed to build damage on him AT ALL, but if that's the case why gimp his base so hard? They could do so many cool things with his W but right now the passive bonus is so underwhelming. Instant passive reset? Cool. Tripling item 3068 damage? Also sweet. AOE damage on end of 3 seconds, a slow added being that he's a full TANK, adding damage pen, the list goes on and on. Dude just plainly needs attention, and this is like, 1 of 15 posts about it I've found.

I often play Shen top and I think he's awesome up there. I whoop most of the top laners I see. I though his taunt was a bit punishing at first, but then I realized against many tops, it's his only moment of weakness besides before his first back, when he has no tanky items or doesn't proc his passive enough.

Imo, his shield's late game power could use a buff and you should be able to cancel his ult.

Let's view some match ups tho... If you miss your taunt or even if you hit it... darius will pull you, full combo you and atleast half your health. If you taunt this guyTryndamere chances are he'll crit you once-twice and make you wish you never taunted him. Garen will just counter chase you even after being taunted and q then spin to win you because shen is so damn slow. Taunting this guy Nasus wont work out for you because he's way too tanky to do anything anyways and he'll wither you after the taunt, throw his e and q you in the face. Gangplank this guy still needs love as does shen, but he'll just q your face whenever you try to do anything and be out of your range. I'm curious though, who were your match ups and who are you whooping? Also share your build as I love shen as well! I just feel that his biggest problem is he has to work way harder for anything than most other laners..Renekton is another example of someone who would whoop shen's ass XD. Anyways I respect your opinion and just offer you my opinion :)

I'm usually against melee tops such as Garen Irelia Nasus. I have scaling armor seals and all the armor I can get from my masteries. This way, I only need to get a item 1031 to have 100 armor (50% damage reduction), which will keep most AD tops from doing much to you, even with item 3134. If my opponent does true/mixed damage or magic damage, I get a item 3751 or item 3211 instead. From there, I grab a item 3068 and finish my the rest of my essential items (item 3047, item 3211 if I don't have it already and there's a significant amount of magic damage on the enemy team). Whatever I get next depend on the situation, but I usually make sure to get a item 3361 for split pushing. item 3078 will cause you to outright shred softies.

My strategy is to use my passive and Q to CS, and poke with my Q if the enemy gets in range. It may not do much at first, but maxing it first (I try to max it as soon as possible) will usually yield results. Since your taunt costs massive amounts of energy, only use it to extend engagements you've won, on opponents you can out trade, or as an escape/disengage. Don't use it while over extended, because then you'll have not escape from the jungler. If you manage to get your first back item, you should be able to out trade your laner, but try not to take unnecessary damage and dodge/avoid attacks you can. Some laners are riskier to trade with Riven, so it may be better to just poke them until they're low enough to engage directly.

Garen Try to whittle him down with your Q's and dash away if he tries to decisive strike you with his spin off cooldown. item 1031 will drastically reduce his damage.

Tryndamere He needs rage to be able to fight you, so try to poke him to force his heal. If he tries to fight you with full rage, you should probably disengage. Once you get a item 3068 though, you should be able to duel him with ult, though he'll probably get away. (I've done it with just a item 1031 xD).

Nasus Try hitting him with your passive as well as you Q's. Taunting him is very risky due to his ult and wither, so you should probably save it to get away. If he withers and attacks you without ult, you might be able to out trade him before first back, but he may also just focus on getting stacks if you don't get in range of his Q. item 3068 should keep him from doing much but I've heard that's a bad idea against a Nasus because it pushs the lane and allows him to farm safely under tower.

Gangplank You should be able to out trade him if you land you taunt since he's a softy, but he isn't likely to get in range once he realizes this. I've yet to meet one who could effectively stay out of my Q range, so poking may still be and option.

Renekton The only time I remember fighting this guy, I managed to beat him. Not sure if what I say will be accurate.
