Do you think that solo lane Lulu should still be viable?

I really like to play Lulu but I hate playing support (bot lane). If Lulu is nerfed to the point that she is no longer a viable solo laner, I will be upset, as I will either be forced to go bot lane to play her, or stop playing her at all.

And frankly, I don't find Lulu to be incredibly OP on solo lane. Yes, she is somewhat annoying to deal with and non-interactive, but she isn't broken in the traditional sense. Solo lane Lulu is balanced by the fact that you are taking her mostly due to her utility, because you are otherwise better off picking other mages.

Let me explain: If you take her at mid lane, you must keep in mind that Lulu's damage is lower than the average mage. Not only she has only two offensive spells, but both of them have low scalings. They both have high base damage, which make them do good damage early, but at late game she is outscaled damage-wise by every other mage, and though her damage is still good against squishies late game, she struggles to do damage against anyone that has a single magic resistance item.

As for top lane, she is squishy. Generally you want a top laner that can be tanky. If you pick Lulu top, you are picking her because she can bully other top laners and still scale well as a protector late game. However, while she can be a bully early, she can't do much once the enemy buys a single magic resistance item. And most top laners outscale her in terms of tankyness, and many of them offer utility as well (ex: Malphite, Nautilus). You could build Lulu tanky to compensate that, but you could probably do better by picking a dedicated tank instead of her.

If you are picking Lulu you are picking her solely for her utility, which she technically does well, but on SoloQ, most teams can't take advantage of her utility. Are you really okay with her no longer being viable at solo lane?

In my opinion Lulu should've always been a stronger/top pick support.

I don't mind solo lane Lulu, but I find it UTMOST bullshit her being a better solo laner than support. Riot has been ignoring support Lulu for over 2 seasons now.

Generally when laning against her it depends from the champion I picked.

Picking a mid or long ranged mage like Malzahar, Lux, Veigar, or Orianna, generally work well due to the fact that Lulu either cannot reach their range, or she loses trades against them. Lulu outscales them in terms of utility but she is outscaled by them on every other aspect.

Melees and short ranged mages do have problems with her, but it is still possible to deal with Lulu if you pick them.

Try to pick a magic resistance item. Lulu despises magic resistance because her damage is really low and if you pick a single magic resistance item it generally becomes impossible for her to kill you (but don't think that you can just kill her if you have magic resistance: she has ways to protect herself). Pick item 3155 if you are an AD assassin/bruiser, item 1057 if you are a short ranged mage or AP bruiser/assassin, or item 3211 if you are a tank.

Try to farm from a safe distance and avoid taking too many autos from Lulu, as she can harass anyone early game with help from her passive. Also, dodge that Q. It is not very difficult to dodge, especially if you are not close to her.

And keep in mind that her forte is utility. If her allies cannot take advantage of it, she is weak. You can take advantage of this on SoloQ, especially on low elos, as even if Lulu tries to protect her allies they will probably fuck up and still die. This is actually the reason why she is dominant on pro play, as pro players actually have the coordination and skill needed to take full advantage of what Lulu has to offer to a team.

SmashGizmo says that the goal is to address Lulu's popularity in pro play, where she's been pick-or-ban for about a year solid, without impacting her terribly at lower levels. They said that they'd probably experiment with different change sets, though.

Why shouldn't she be viable solo lane? Because she has utility? Then we should gut solo Zilean too then.

Lulu has been a pretty ok support, just needs more brains and cooperation. You know, like the Jhin kind of team dependency. The Azir kind of "skillfloor" needed, because we all know you can't just get a random person and expect him to do well as Lulu support.

Speaking of solo lane, never a fan of it. I don't mind if picking her means you are sacrificing a lot of potential damage for utility/"second support". Playstyle is boring and tedious (hurr durr waveclear minions and champs all day), but with sharp mechanical skill it becomes stupidly deadly. I'm fine with all that. Though given for how much safety with little risk, yet lots of "reward" (especially in team play) is the problem. And as a support main... it's even worse when two completely different playstyles branched out from one champ, and have people mistaking me for "maining such a toxic champ". I do agree with you that it does have faults, and that she CAN be dealt with.

Popularity, however, is something different. Lulu solo isn't necessarily "more OP" than her support, but her solo was more popular because of how people play things, and the kind of things they favored. She was a good pick in solo lanes because passively farming and denying farm... is something they exactly wanted in a solo laner in competitive. On the flip side, supports in competitive is pretty much a secondary jungler, but without items but mobi boots and level 1 gold item. That's something Lulu doesn't have, so therefore most likely won't see support play in competitive.

In soloQ, it is assumed that anyone heavily team-reliant are not favorable. Lulu, in general, is very team reliant, and taking her as support makes the dependency even greater... people don't like that. And why try playing mindgames, something that many people don't really have, when mashing buttons in order, something that many people especially higher up CAN do, creates the same results? It's also the same reasons Nami and Sona supports are just as unpopular higher up.

Bottom line, it's more on the player mentalities on why Lulu solo is increasingly more popular than her supporting, which also explains the amount of QQ that people tend to have. I don't mind at all when she can be taken to places outside botlane (jungle Lulu is fun, I'll tell ya), but it's a problem when she has been 100% pick/ban in competitive, because... it's just getting old. It's not fun at all to watch when all that person did was script himself and poke all day, assign E to always enemy cast, assign W to only ally cast, etc. But to answer your question, no problem with her solo lane being viable, but just needs more obvious and punishable weaknesses.

######And yes, I don't like solo Lulu mainly because they make Lulu support mains look bad :(

Solo lane Lulu will always be a problem due to how much utilities her kit provides as she was designed as a support champion.

I don't mind Lulu solo lane; however, her support lane is constantly getting nerfed due to the countless nerfs from her solo lane experiences.

I feel Lulu needs more of a nerf in regards to wave clear as opposed to these nerfs as these just hurt her support role phase. As a Lulu support main, I just don't like the way these current nerfs are taking her - she's already been a weak support for a while now.
