So champions with skillshots require skill?

There was a lot discussion before about someone like Ryze and how he could easily point and QWER single champion to death while other champions have to actually aim. Does the community think that if the champion has all or almost all skillshots on QWER instead of point&click, he is automatically requires more skill to play by default? What do you think? What if there was a champion whose basic attack was a skillshot?

I think it requires more skill because you can dodge a skillshot. Put it in the opposite mindset - does having more skill help more against a skillshot reliant champion or against a point-and-click champion? It should be fairly obvious that being more skilled will show up more reliably against the former class. By effectively nullifying some of your opponents skill, I would say the point-and-click class requires less skill.

That said, there is so much to this game and each champion beyond just using their skills. Positioning and warding are great examples. Knowing when and how to initiate or get in to existing fights as well.

Another good example of a high-skill-cap champion with point-and-click abilities is Alistar. His W-Q combo isn't exactly easy to pull off and yet neither ability is a "skillshot" (Alistar has no aimed abilities). Alistar also has to manage his mana as he can't use too many abilities without completely running out. So it also depends on the mechanics of the champion beyond just their skillshots. If you can't W-Q with Alistar how are you going to initiate as the team's tank?

Skillshots don't require more skill than point and click abilities. How hard is it to land a skillshot?

Dota is all point and click with a few exceptions and it has a higher skill cap than LoL.

Yes. Pure skillshot champions have even more pressure just trying to land EVERY skillshot, and missing one, just one, could be the death of you, whether it be in a skirmish, a teamfight, whatever. You'll be missing out on valuable damage or even cc, if you miss.

If we're talking p&c vs skillshots, I believe champions with skillshot tend to have bigger zones than point and click champions. So, skillshot champions could potentially out-zone the P&c'er.

I think that there is a little give and take here. on the one hand, yes. Skillshots take a bit more skill to land seeing as they don't

  1. curve mid-flight
  2. extend past their normal cast range to catch fleeing or flashing targets
  3. pass through intervening units (a good portion of skillshots stop after impacting on one target while most, if not all, point-and-click abilities pass harmlessly through multiple bodies to collide with the intended target)

The trade-off is GENERALLY that point-and-click abilities have shorter range than skillshots and will not cast until you are in range to hit. This means you can be more easily kited. If you click Rune Prison on a champ who then starts moving away, you will continue to chase them into dangerous territory if you don't actively break off. Where as, Vel'Koz' Plasma Fission Can be cast from safety, behind your team and requires no target.

BUT Plasma Fission can be intercepted by minions or beefier champs and protect your intended target.

Most point-and-click abilities do not have the ability to hit multiple targets with a single cast. The skillshots that have this feature are GENERALLY shorter range than single hit, body-blockable skillshots.

There's a few comparisons to emphasize the balance between point-and-click and skillshot abilities. I hope that helps.

Generally yes, though an underpowered skillshot champion is probably slightly easier to play than an underpowered point and click, because you can keep your distance and abuse line of sight.

Considering skillshots have significantly better ability costs, lower cooldowns, better cast ranges, better cast animations, faster projectile speeds, better utility than point and click counterparts I'd say acting like they require more 'skill' is a fallacy, probably one of the biggest in the game. There is no skill in sitting back with say a ziggs and throwing your 1700 speed, 50-90 mana cost bomb every 6-4 seconds (with no cdr mind you).

When asking if a skillshot takes skill, you need to look at the whole kit. If there's virtually no penalty for missing one then it inherently won't take skill. At least champs with point and click abilities need to go to the danger zone to do anything.

And one more thing, skillshots do have a distinct advantage - they can hit in the fog of war. Point and click abilities require vision.

In almost all cases skill shot champions should require more skill. It actually takes skill to "aim" your ability and hit it. While it is true that with enough skill, you can basically always guarantee landing your skill shot, it doesn't change the fact that the opponent has the ability to dodge it if they move out of its path. For skill shot champions, the main thing for them is that they NEED to land their skill shot ability as part of their kit to be able to effectively fight. Champions like Morgana and Ahri are good examples as if the miss their skill shots, they can't even hope to kill their opponents unless they are far ahead.

Ryze is complained about because he is a bully at top lane in the current meta right now who also scales very well into lategame ontop of building offensively and defensively at the same time.

Him having no skillshots and therefore not taking skill is merely an excuse by people getting beaten by him rather than trying to counter him.

Look at Vayne, she's one of the champions who every talks about taking great "mechanics" and skill to play well. If you've ever played vayne or looked at her kit, there are no skillshots to be found on this champion! A skillshotless champion is often regarded by the community as taking a lot of skill and practice.

And as far as a champion who's basic attack is a skillshot, the closest we have is karthus, who's Q is supposed to replace his auto attacks in every scenario excluding destroying buildings (his autos are intentionally designed to be bad to encourage use of Lay waste. Karthus' autoattacks having 450 attack range, dealing little damage and having a large windup)
