I've never really understood the Promotion/Demotion system of league.

So when you hit 100 LP you get a chance for a promotion. In order to pass the promotion you must win 2 out of the 3 next games and then you'll reach the next division at 0 LP, no matter if you want two games in a row meaning you went 2/0 or if you went 2/1. However, when you reach 0 LP, all it takes is one more loss for you to demote to the previous division, placing you at 75 LP. The only time more than one loss is required to demote at 0 LP is if you just recently promoted into the division. Now, there are three main things I never understood about this system.

  1. No matter if you went 2/0 or 2/1 during the promotion makes no difference. The "net" LP of some players could be much higher than others because of things like this yet have them placed around the same area.

  2. The fact that the system for going up and down divisions are different and seemingly easier to go down divisions is weird. Will build more on this below.

  3. By losing one game at 0 LP, you are then required to win roughly 2 games in a row, and then your next 2/3 after that just to get back where you were. Average person probably wins/loses about 20 LP per game, so having the LP set to 75 after demoting requires 2 games to get into promos, then another 2 wins with only one loss allowed to get back where you were originally. Meanwhile, it's possible for some people to win one game after promos then lose two games to demote back to 75 LP in the previous division.

Honestly, I don't know how it makes sense for the systems to differ so much between demoting and promoting. Each way has its own pros and cons, such as the promotion system better filtering people who just have "lucky games", yet at the same time the demotion system allows for people who have "unlucky" games to suffer as well. Personally, I'd much rather prefer there being no best 2/3 process or a demotion hard putting you at 75 lp in the lower division. It'd be much easier if we met halfway and did a fluid transition between divisions where if you go above 100 lp or below 0 then you just move to another divisions carrying over any left over LP.

I don't think this is right. My understanding is that demotions occur when you're at 0LP, lose a game, and your MMR is below a certain threshold relative to the expected MMR of your current ranking.

So if you're demoting on your first loss at 0LP, it means your MMR keep falling well below "normal" for that rank.
