Is Ryze worth playing anymore?

So I just tried to pick Ryze back up after not touching him for a long while. Did a few Bot games to try the new kit, then took him into PVP.

I got utterly destroyed by this complete prick Gnar who spent the whole match chain-killing me because I couldn't fight back, just because it amused him to see me get frustrated about not being able to actually DO anything all game. I spent the whole match as some trolls rage fuel.

Is Ryze worth practicing more, because frankly after going 3/13/15 in my first PVP match with him, I'm, ready to re-bench him and never look back. It'd be one thing if I just died a few times but could still do something relevant in the game, but this was a completely miserable experience of being dead weight to the team all game and not able to accomplish anything useful. I dunno if I ever want to touch him again after this.

Ok sure but why2 votes

The thing is, if someone finds a way to make Ryze worth playing, Riot will immediately nerf it

He is fine, just takes skill.

Ryze feels really bad to play rn IMO. He's super fun and I'd love to be able to play him more but its just so hard. He's probably one of if not the hardest champion in the game IMO, but the payoff for mastering him is nowhere near any of the other high difficulty champions like Azir or Riven.

Yeeaahhh. His E's debuff doesn't even last long enough to proc off and spread around for aoe damage until mid-game. Was a pain in the ass trying to just be... relevant.

If you want some tips, new Ryze relies a lot on CDR so you'll want to get some of in your runes. Also Zhonyas is extremely good on him now since it gives cdr and he can use the active with his ult to get out of any situation unscathed.

Does Zhonyas not cancel the ult teleport? Hmm, that's an interesting piece of info. O_o Thanks

Nope, its actually the strongest escape in the game but you need to have both Zhonyas and your Ult for it to work.

He sucks in casual solo play. In competitive team play he's a beast. That's why you see like no one having success with him except for high elo

Seems like he'd be an ultbot to mobilize the team quickly, but otherwise I dunno what the hell they'd use him for.

Between his E and his Q, he has solid and safe waveclear (champs that can control waves in both directions safely are valuable) Ryze's build makes him decently bulky while still giving him amazing punching power, as well as being okay to invest in even when behind His Snare

If you walk through his abilities there are a LOT of small things that are, at least on paper, incredibly invaluable in high level play.

Just play him more and then he will suck less. Also try him jungle to learn his combos better, you basically trade with jungle camps and learn how to play him. Plus you get more practice being a teamplayer, which ryze should be with that ult.

The trick is to use your ult for either ganks in lane phase or escapes for low health or out of place teamates. In solo que its a risk to use ult for the whole team as communication is bad. Once you learn combos such as e aa q aa w aa e aa q as well as learn abilities and rune stacks he is very good albiet not the best AP laner to "carry" a team as he is midranged, strictly combo reliant and does not build sheen to take towers in a reasonable amount of time.
