why are eternals so negatively received?

Kai Guy··4 votes·4,060 views

My feeling on the topic. Related to the Achievement tab that Riot never once used. I like the company and think they make the best moba out there but I have a negative feeling about this feature. After a bit of thought this is what I decided is why I feel that way. We had a tab that never got used and now it finally feels like riots following up on it.... but you gotta pay $ for it.

Look. If the content is solid then I will get over it. Right now? From the FAQ and other post? No... I am not sold on it. imo Needs at the very least skin or champion specific emote.

Am I alone in this opinion or do most old players share the same viewpoint? (you don't have to agree with my bias about the games quality in the moba marketplace btw. That's just me stating my Bias.)

Expecting players to pay for features that should be baseline in video games is pathetic and greedy is why, especially when a lot of those old players have been asking for achievements since 2009.

In what world is paying to showcase achievements ok, like how does that even make any sense? I thought the point of achievements was you EARNING something, what does paying for the right to show them accomplish, congrats on earning the real life money?

Others did it and made $. Riot has done their best work when they are willing to break way from the normal mold. This feels like a loss to me. And shit jam you and I both like them most the time. That's a fair claim yea?

If the swag you get is worth it. Ok. Icon, emote, Skin. If all it is is bragging rights? Fuck that Noise. I Hope they Step it up, I really do. As it stands... Hard pass for me. I skip on almost every battle pass unless there is something I think justifys the $ included that I can get. The current Project event? Im skipping the pass. If they don't step it up? im skipping eternals.

S'll good. Hades by supergiant games is in alpha so that's where my game $ is gonna go this month. Those guys make art.

It's more a loss to me because it shows a clear disregard for sense for the sake of money.

It isn't about whether it is worth it or not, it is that core concepts to video games shouldn't have a price tag attached to them.

Fair enough. I read over your other comments in this thread and feel I have a more solid understanding of your attitude.

But I will double check with you. Is it correct to say that you don't like a "Battle pass" for Stats as a concept as its such a basic feature that inclusion of stat tracking should inherently be available to everybody? So Eternals on release should at the very least include the stat side tracking as free to players for it to be acceptable to you yea?

I was more focused on the underwhelming cosmetic element and the disappointment over finally seeing an Achievement system being implemented but locked by a pay wall. That's what generated my negative feelings for it mostly.

That is exactly what I'm saying, or at the very least, let people pay using BE, you know, let people access the achievement system, the way to showcasing their devotion to the champion, with the in game currency you earn. I'm not crazy in thinking PAYING to showcase your ACHIEVEMENTS is ass backwards.

There is also that of course, but I'm more upset with paywall.

Most games that have them you kind of have to buy the game in the first place. So since league is free, why is it bad that they like many other free to play, are doing the opposite?

Because paying for things that should be baseline in a video game will only lead to things getting worst.

Other games are trying to sell a single cosmetic for 170 dollars, should Riot follow that too?

Sukishoo1 votes

But how are they baseline? Why should all games come with the same things? What would set them apart when it's always the same?

Have you seen prestige shop skins? I think they already got that covered :)

Why should free forum use be baseline? 50 rp per post! Debeloping the boards obviously cost money to do, why should riot not monetize it?

The free to play model should provide you with everything needed to play the game, with cosmetics being how they make money. There are free to play, but pay to win games, however those are all shitty games anyway.

Sure, achievements aren't strictly needed, but it is a small feature that's been around forever in other games. Hell, even my Audible app implemented achievements without charging me for them.

That's not to mention the pricing...850rp for a set of 3? I think that comes out to $3 each which is quite a lot of money to pay for a little logo that says "I landed x Qs". The achievements are so generic that they arent even really an achievement, but rather a stat tracker which you will be guaranteed to conplete eventually without even trying.

Wait, are you breathing air while using a Riot product? Holy shit, I hope you remembered to pay your "Breathing while using a Riot product" fee. That paywall can be so annoying to deal with

Sukishoo1 votes

Forums are an outdated method of communication, hence why most of Riot doesn't even come here. So they wouldn't make money off that, people would stop using it all together.

F2P models only give you a certain amount not everything. They have to continually make money and not everyone buys cosmetic skins, emotes, icons..

There's the fact we have to buy champions, yes with both real money or ingame currency but they do spend a lot of time on this stuff so they can't always attach a BE cost to everything or else they'd definitely lose out on a lot more.

Most achievements in games you should be able to really complete fairly easily or it'd honestly be pointless in the first place, I for one have over 30 games platinum on my Ps4 (meaning every single trophy/achievement unlocked) out of the maybe 100 I have, so it's a pretty decent amount. But all of these wouldn't be made possible to do without buying the $65 games. Where as F2P is well free so gotta find some way to continually make money, especially when cosmetics can't be the only source forever.

Kanzler1 votes

Riot definitely isnt struggling to make a buck. Skins will always be a huge source of income for them especially with the quality of each new one.

Do you honestly think charging people 850rp to make the stat tracking visible is a good business plan that aims to create a good product first and foremost? There are so many other things they could have created to sell for RP: map skins and announcer packs for example.

It would even be more understandable, but still not excusable, if they were actual achievements instead of dumb generic shit like "get x kills" or "hit y Qs".

Sukishoo1 votes

A lot of those things take far longer to craft. VO for an announcer deals with writting and editing a script, auditioning voice actors or seeing if current ones are avaliable, then recording, possibly changing the script as they go, editing the audio, testing it, getting internal feedback... So many things go into VO that people don't realise (Im a voice actor so I know a lot of this). This can take months to put together as well.

Map skins are also another thing that does take time, plus they generally use both those things for events. So having them easily available outside those events kind of takes away from the uniqueness those events bring.

850 is more around $7 so it's more like $2.3 for each of those things which is honestly very little either way. It's not like they are asking for $10 or more on each set. Most people are probably meant to only buy one or two sets for their mains. It's not like they expect players to go and buy all 140+ champion sets or more.

Kanzler1 votes

How dare they actually put effort into a product they want to sell?

The problem with people being ok with overpriced junk like this is that it will just encourage riot to keep making shit and putting a disproportionally large price tag on it instead if actually making quality stuff.

Sukishoo1 votes

But it's not over priced. If they were asking for $22 or 3250 the cost of an Ultimate for it then it'd not be okay. It's a perfectly reasonable cost for getting 3 eternals that contain stat tracking, as well as cosmetic upgrades for a small price of $7.

Each one has a set of these https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hBkWTb6DECg/XVNACa2-a1I/AAAAAAABXM8/ufm7G3AKTacse49LfgXsPCnzQSmkuza9QCLcBGAs/s1600/ss_icon_cc_unique_0.png https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lEwoS8lMc40/XVNAC8yAgNI/AAAAAAABXNA/bnpw_iTOxfQIa_Taea12HT-QAUajVBbtQCLcBGAs/s1600/ss_icon_cc_unique_1.png https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eCcqiOQur-o/XVNADWyXt1I/AAAAAAABXNE/J3V4jyK3cigTeeF20RibFIuW5uJB9PupQCLcBGAs/s1600/ss_icon_cc_unique_2.png https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-56b36MVjuEI/XVNADhxcUwI/AAAAAAABXNI/kSPuOUEV8MYuVml2fmgS3GI8K80_q3VVACLcBGAs/s1600/ss_icon_cc_unique_3.png that change with each level put into it. Then of course there's the mastery emote upgrades. So there's a lot of work put into these that people continue to skip over.

Kanzler1 votes

Because they are disguising it as an achievement system. Stat tracking is something that everyone else puts in for free.

It's not actually anything that shows your mastery, just that you spent 850 rp to track your stats.

Sukishoo1 votes

Everyone else puts in for free? Did you not read the Dev Blog, pretty sure they mentioned that Dota 2 puts that in with a Subscription, would you rather they make you pay monthly for something here too? Cause clearly a one time cost is just the devil!!

Kanzler1 votes

I think there is a list of a few people who are also as greedy as riot. Most of them being Valve.

Like I said, my audio book app gives me free achievements and stat tracking with cosmetic icons that look just as nice. Riot could do the same, but they are greedy as fuck.

Sukishoo1 votes

Yes cause achievements are something that people want to track in an Audio book... that just seems like a pointless addition there.

Kanzler1 votes

And yet they did it for free. If it was such a huge cost with no reward, why do it?

I don’t want to live in a world where baseline features in video games are sold back to us as a premium free to play or not.

Achievement have been a part of video games since their inception, imagine if you had to pay an additional quarter back in the arcade days to put your high score, shit would be fucked.

The concept of achievements means earning things, what sense does it make that I need to PAY to showcase I earned it, that to me, seems like the complete opposite of what an achievement should be.

I have probably spent more time playing this game compared to any other but that doesn’t give them an ok to overstep their boundaries like this and if we are ok with this, shit will get worst, not better. Oh and there is literally no reason they couldn’t have done this for BE.

Sukishoo1 votes

You kind of did though. In order to keep playing you had to keep paying, and thus that would make your score go up.

The concept of achievements means earning things, what sense does it make that I need to PAY to showcase I earned it, that to me, seems like the complete opposite of what an achievement should be.

We already have Mastery Emotes in game which we can "earn" and "pay for in BE" So it was already there, why is this so different because it costs $7? Oh no, so much money.

Oh and there is literally no reason they couldn’t have done this for BE.

Yet there is. They put time in to built all of this stuff, the cosmetic side and non, so they'd be losing out if they put everything in game at a BE cost. It's why champions come with a VERY HIGH BE cost or an RP cost and free to play rotations.

Depends on the machine, most reset your score or doxxed your points and thus denied you the high score.

The price isn't the problem, the implication is. It's like when Konami tried to sell save slots. The fact there are work arounds isn't the problem, it is the precedence that is being set that if we say we are ok with, will allow things to only continue to get worst.

Yet there is. They put time in to built all of this stuff, the cosmetic side and non, so they'd be losing out if they put everything in game at a BE cost. It's why champions come with a VERY HIGH BE cost or an RP cost and free to play rotations.

Not saying everything should be BE, I am saying stop the bullshit narrative of eternals HAVING to be RP, and stop putting a paywall on basic concepts in video games.

Sukishoo1 votes

Selling save slots eh? There used to be this thing called Memory cards, so that'd be around for a long time. So that honestly shouldn't have been anything new, but yeah when we have built in saves now it shouldn't happen.

But yet, most people are whining cause they have a price... so it comes off as a problem that you have with it.

As for Paywalls, it's part of games in all types of fashions and has been for well at least a good 10 years or more now. They haven't changed and I really doubt it will with any company.

Those were only a thing during the short amount of time where the technology of the time couldn't manage having both the game and memory saved on the same place, and literally for only one section of systems, not because they were trying to nickel and dime you.

But yet, most people are whining cause they have a price... so it comes off as a problem that you have with it.

Well I'm not, the price isn't the problem, I would be up in arms if this was even a dollar, my problem is this even costing money in the first place.

As for Paywalls, it's part of games in all types of fashions and has been for well at least a good 10 years or more now. They haven't changed and I really doubt it will with any company.

So we should just be ok with it then? We should be ok with these companies pushing the boundaries of what is ok farther and farther as they please? When we are eventually paying for have access to the controls of the game, remember, you said we should just be ok with it.

And before you say it won't get to that point, ten years ago, had you told people that cosmetics would cost a quarter to three times as much of a triple A game, baseline features like save files and achievements would cost money, and content already on the disc would be cut to make you pay an additional 10 to 20 dollars for, you would have been laughed at. Fast forward to today, EA thinks it is ok to make people spend 170 dollars for a cosmetic, companies like Konami think it is ok to make people pay for save files, and companies a plenty from EA to Capcom are purposely cutting out content already on the disc, that you legally own, and making you pay extra for. (Fun fact on that, you are legally allowed to modify games you own to a certain capacity. As long as it doesn't interfere with other players, in the case of single player games, you own the material so you are entirely in your right to simply mod in the content they are trying to make you pay for.)

I want the video game industry to get better, and if we continue to have this stance of "Oh, well others do it." or "Well, nothing we can do about it." it is only going to keep getting worst.

Sukishoo1 votes

But yet you just said you weren't and that you are. The fact it has a price is the problem that you are having and that's what I meant in the first place. Would you rather they went for a subscription like DOTA 2 does? I don't think that'd be at all a good play.

The rest

Well that's like saying video games shouldn't cost $65 to $100 or more, where they used to be like $20 or less for a new game, when yet here we are. People continually buy them and don't go to stores or companies crying to drop the price massively because it's unfair when it's first released, but yet all other companies have the same priced games. It's all based on supply and demand. Time makes things go up and they continue to release other things (like accessories) that will still cost money to go along with those. It's like why DLC characters in fighting games cost $5 generally (Capcom). I used to think that was a bit much but if you calculate the time and effort put into said content it is indeed worth the cost.

Well that's like saying video games shouldn't cost $65 to $100 or more, where they used to be like $20 or less for a new game, when yet here we are.

That's literally false. Video games in America have ALWAYS been 50 to 70 dollars, even back in the SNES days, N64 cartridges in fact were on average 70 dollars, where are you getting this 20 dollar price tag? Unless you were getting things only from the bargain bin.

It's like why DLC characters in fighting games cost $5 generally (Capcom). I used to think that was a bit much but if you calculate the time and effort put into said content it is indeed worth the cost.

It is nothing like DLC characters though. We aren't talking a whole brand new character, we are talking about achievements, they are trying to make people pay for achievements. A DLC character you have to pay for animations, you have to pay for voice actors, for riggers, for programmers, all of that that justifies the price of it. Achievements have nowhere near as much as that work.

I had many of those as well that were brand new and were far below $50. Most of my 64 yes were $40-50, I never saw one that was $70. However things for things for my Sega mastery system were far below any of those. So no, they have not always been that.

Most games that have them you kind of have to buy the game in the first place. So since league is free, why is it bad that they like many other free to play, are doing the opposite?

Because pretty much the majority of the playerbase has already spent at least 30-60$ on skins. I understand the idea of "Well, it's F2P", but when 1 player can spend over 1000 on one game (Like I have, I know I'm dumb for doing so, but it was over a period of 6 or 7 years), that argument goes out the window.

Sukishoo1 votes

It does matter. Let's assume League was a 60$ game. That means that in the current F2P style that it currently is, One player has bought (Assuming a player that has spent 10000$) 166 copies of the game. Going by the logic of them having the right to charge for achievements because the game is free, you who have spent 10000$ on the game are now being forced to pay for a feature that you would have bought 166 times already.

Sukishoo1 votes

If it were a $60 game though those things generally come with them, have yet to see one where it's a paid feature after buying the game. League is a F2P though so it doesn't come with quite the same features obviously. 850 rp is equally around $7 or $2.3 per for each eternal in a set, which is little to nothing. It's not like they are charging $22 or 3250 to try and get these.

Okay but they aren't charging you once. That's the problem, They're charging you once per 3 sets. That's 145 champions divided by 3. Or 48 separate charges to have all of them. $7 turns into $338 for someone who wants all of them. That's scummy.

That's entirely different. Skins don't impact gameplay or how you play the game (Or at least they aren't supposed to, eh hem, Surprise Party Amumu...). These achievements will. They're also supposed to act as a badge of honor. Nobody is going to look at somebody using Elementalist Lux and be like "Oh wow, they're so good at the game" in the same way nobody is going to look at a person who bought a bunch of Eternals and be like "Good for them on how much money they spent".

Not really. Neither one affects the gameplay at all. One is just tracing what you're doing where the other changes how you look.

They tried to act like they didn't have the means to track this information already. They already tracked specific stats related to champions in the end of season reports they do, so they felt the need to try to make this seem like more work than it was. Yeah sure, they probably had to test some extra bits to make sure it worked in game, but it is not some crazy new system that they tried to sell it as. Easiest way to figure out a company is trying to scam you is when you catch them inflating features or how much work something took.

It is like buying a laptop/computer and seeing "RJ45 connector" listed to inflate the selling page heading. No shit the laptop/computer comes with an Ethernet port, that doesn't magically make your garbage worth $1200 when the specs are that of a $300 computer.

DerMangoJoghurt1 votes

It's weird because on one side it makes sense Riot wants to monetize this. It costs money to develop eternals, it will cost money to expand them and there's a running cost to maintain them. On the other hand, there's no way I'm going to pay that much money for tracking a few stats. We're most likely not the intended target audience, but even then it stings a little to see a new feature that you'd like to use but won't because there's a prize attached to it.

It does feel like a let down for all the old players who wanted the "Achievement tab" To be a thing. I am one of them. Hope they make it worthwhile but Atm I dislike the implementation a good deal.

Kahl Drogo981 votes

I know one reason that people are mad is because Riot is trying to market them as 'Achievements' but really its just basic stat tracking. It's not true achievements that would take actual skill to get, its just stuff that any old joe can get with enough play time of the champion.

There will always be folks who want more for less.

But there is a lot of backlash on this topic from the kind of folks who normaly have no issues with supporting Riot with their $. For example, I am Blatantly a Fan of the game and Riot but I feel pretty negatively about this feature. The implementation is just weak and so I am disappointed if they don't provide a reasonable value. Its a let down for a lot of people for different reasons, not just cuz your not getting free swag.

I was curious and made a post to see what community's thoughts are. Its got potential yet needs the proper implementation to realize that potential.
