Why new runes are better than old ones
Now this is probably a pretty unpopular thought amongst the boards but just hear me out on this one.
Current runes in their whole existence has always been simply put, stats your characters weren't allowed to have. Every mage has always been cheated of 10-15 AP. Many champions lose out on Attack Speed or AD. Many champions are forced into certain builds because if you don't have X stats, you basically surrender any lane you may have. Majority of the time, that's all Runes are. They are your early game stats. Sometimes you would have scaling ones but the lack of pure early stats for potential late stats is often just not worth it.
Simply put, every champion in the game could get by with the exact same 2 pages.
AD AD Red, Armor Yellows, MR Blues and AS Quints
AP M.Pen Red, Armor Yellows, MR Blues and AP Quints
These are the two most common pages for any player and champion and although they may not be as effective for some champion, they work for every champion well enough. Now some champions will miss certain runes, I know that. My ivern will greatly miss his Movement speed quints.
However! People need to realize that runes as Riot is trying to design them, are meant to offer the player more meaningful options to explore. Rather than just having the same best pages that will go onto every single champion and require little to no thought. If you are a one-trick you may have several pages for one champion but very rather is it massively different. A couple of numbers here and there but they are all just lackluster, with no thought required.
Now the great thing about the new system is you have more options with actual thought behind them. They aren't just base stats which aren't interesting to play around with. Many of these runes can also have a wider spread effect for champions, allowing players to actual play around with different runes for different champions rather than a set standard of the same runes with sometimes different ones. (Armor yellows and MR blues are almost always in every page just so you can lane.) Pre-game planning now actually matters a lot more and allows player to finally theory craft again!
This is good!
Theory crafting allows players to explore new and interesting options that they otherwise couldn't. Yes you could use Gold per minute or energy runes or whatever, but let's be real. Those were pretty bad. What I am hoping to see with new runes is a wider appeal and variety that allows me to actually try out different things instead of being screwed completely because I chose to pick MS quints in lane over AP. Now this isn't to say the same won't happen. I do believe it will because that's how metas work. However, now I can chose to focus and bank on certain things way more effectively than I ever could before.
Another important note for people that are worried is WE HAVEN'T SEEN ALL THE RUNES YET. There is likely to be a lot of changes this pre-season and we are only getting a sneak peak at everything. Base stats, items, runes and many more will see change and this will be a learning period. That's how it will be and I am excited to see what Riot is going to bring. The current rune system is not interesting and these changes aim to fix that. Don't lose your cools yet people!
if they're CC heavy or have a suppression?
