Why are you comparing a champion like Volibear to Thresh? This doesn't make sense. Don't get me wrong I think Thresh is overloaded and could use a few small tweaks but the reason volibear shouldn't be at that high a winrate too long is because some champions are far more oppressive than others when very strong and popular. A super tanky bear running at you and ccing you while also doing a large amount of damage is not fun when there are little options to retaliate. That's why he was nerfed down to a state where it wasn't as oppressive as it was.
Take when Ahri nerfs were the hot topic on the boards. This exact comparison was made, saying Volibear got gutted immideitely but Ahri was allowed to stay at that winrate for longer. At the end of the day, she is still a squishy burst mage that can get cced and bursted, while when volibear was strong it felt so oppressive. Did Ahri need small nerfs? Yes, and she got them but it wasn't as big of an issue because again she could be far more easily shut down compared to a Volibear. You cannot keep using these kind of comparisons to get a champion nerfed.
You guys should write well thought out posts on what you feel the issue with the champion you wanted nerfed is and then give suggestions, not "omg look rito favoritism strikes again xd". What is Riot supposed to do with that information? They don't care if they show favoritism, they even admitted it with Lee. You need to give ideas for nerfs that both parties will be happy with.
Volibear
Low elo:
Volibear is too tanky and does too much damage.
High elo:
He is easily kited past early - mid game and his damage falls off.
Ahri
Low elo:
She can be cc'd and bursted easily.
High elo:
She has an incredibly easy laning phase with the mobility + damage to create plays and dodge cc.
Do you know which one yells the loudest? I'll give you a hint, its the one with the most people.
Volibear was pretty good at all elo's. The difference between Voli and Thresh, is that Voli is an outdated champion who gets his way through being a massive ball of stats. Nobody likes going against that. It was terrifying seeing a 10 ft, 600kg armored electric bear charging towards your champion at 40 km/h, shrugging off any resistance you or your turret throw at him, ready to ravage your bunghole.
Making a point of difference of perspective, I didn't care that Volibear was 'gutted'.

Hell I think SotA was a bigger nerf to Voli than that. This nerf was literally to get low elo to shut up xD
No, he wasn't. Most people considering him to not have a passive once mid game comes in high elo.

don't lie, even at high elo he was complained about.
No, he was not. Hence having no ban rate whatsoever.

I'm on mobile so you may have to sort it to diamond by yourself. He went up to a whopping 3% banrate at the height of his power.
Are there any stats of his ban rate / win rate since his release?
Literally what I linked is as close as you can get without compiling the data yourself. It has the past 3 years on there.
Well there is a very clear hole here. I guess we'll have to say we just don't know Voli's ban rate during the prime years of the bear.
His ban rate for 1 year ago is on there, the topic of this discussion...
the topic of this discussion
Where does it say this?
In the title?
i remember volibear getting gutted for having 54%w.r yet low play rate
That was mid season 6, well within the 3 years of ban rate we have xD
Edit: You missed down voting my link post btw, please go fix that.
And he never had a winrate ~54% before that?
I don't downvote good posts.
[slayer-jinx-wink]
Nope, that is why he got constant buffs from season 1 onward until mid season 6.
I down voted it for you, it triggered my ocd

What are you to say what goes on in high elo? You're in the same division as I am.
And? Am I talking my elo? No, I am not.
Right, you're not talking about your elo. You even said it yourself. So what makes you an expert about high elo? You don't know any better than I do.
You don't know any better than I do.
Because talking to high elo players and watching streams is such an impossible thing.
volibear has never been good at high elo.
you can outplay volibear while thresh can outplay you, i don't see how you having counterplay is more oppressive.
LOL are you actually attempting to say Volibear is more oppressive than Ahri? Is this a joke? Take the movement speed on Voli's Q then add a 900 range AP/True Damage projectile too it. Hey dont forget Voli gets pretty much jack shit for using it to run away
Lmao "just a squishy burst mage that can get cced and bursted" yeah alright dude. Ahri totally doesnt have one of the hands down most forgiving kits in the entire game. Lets ignore that if Ahri fucks up she has R>Flash>Q>R>R that literally no champion i the entire game is capable of catching up without a semi-global ult.
You need to take a step outside your bubble because saying Volibear is oppressive compared to Ahri is fucking nuts.
Jesus Christ

yes he was, when Voli was meta he didn't cared one bit about anything and his Q MS boost applied ALL THE TIME, not just when he was running towards you. You had a tank literally running towards you, taking no damage and then chunking you down with every bite he did on you while you struggled to even do any damage to him. Ahri at all times even when she was stupidly broken you could still kill her if you caught her. Voli? he laughed at you and just ran you over. I know you hate Ahri but at the bare minimum try to care about thing you talk about. No one is talking about Voli now vs Ahri now. We are talking about a time where Voli was much stronger than he is now

Top fucking kek. That was changed at the beginning of season 2. Do some research next time thanks

like you? sorry but no
Then maybe you shouldnt chime in with straight up lies when you obviously have no clue what you're talking about? Tell me, what was the point of making your comment if you had absolutely zero clue if it was even true?

what is the point of your post? other than use current ahri vs current Voli like it means anything in what people are talking about here?

Can you seriously shut up? Its pathetic enough that you two are arguing, but moreso for you since you literally sound like you are talking out your ass, the guy calls you out and actually talks about REAL things like Voli's strong point, and Ahri's kit and such and all you do is basically throw a tamper tantrum . There is a reason Ahri has ALWAYS been up there with Riven, Yasuo, Vayne, Darius, Fiora, Lee and such as most hated champs in the game. While Voli ONCE upon a time in his prime was strong but it has long since been gone, he kinda came back during Season 5 with release Cinderhulk and Sated Devourer but those didn't last long either. There is literally no reason to pick Voli over things like Hecarim, Sejuani, and Vi, way more damage, generally build as tanky as him, and actually have real CC.
Ahri if you love her or hate her, everyone knows she is always relevant, she is similar to Orianna with always being able to play into next to anything. But unlike Ori, she has mobility and even higher burst and chase potential. Ori if she messes up has to use her ult or flash to get away. Ahri can either use Qs high MS boost to run away, or use her ults 3 dashes, then her flash to get away, and Ahris ult isnt a long cd, while Ori is a higher cd and that basically is her champ, a massive teamfight ult, Ahri can do just fine with her ult down.
It doesn't matter if the Thresh and Voli comparision isn't perfect. It doesn't change the results. Voli was gutted when he was really strong almost immediately, similar to how Sej got gutted until her recent rework for being in the limelight for too long. Thresh is allowed to be an extremely strong and overloaded champ since he is a favorite of Riots. Just because Voli can kill someone easily and fast while Thresh doesn't means little. Thresh can single handedly win a teamfight or an entire game. Voli even during his OP state couldn't do that.
Also judging from your downvotes, clearly people that are reading this don't agree with your views. Like the guy you are arguing with said, you may want to either go quiet for talking crap, or actually look up what you are talking about and actually have something to say. Its one thing for people to have opinions, another for talking out your ass and say its fact.

I believe you mean BEAR minimum.

I'll see myself out.
Came in here to say the same exact thing, ya beat me to it.
does riot even read every post on gameplay?
Volibear is not comparable to Thresh. Voli is much more oppressive when very meta.
As someone who mained Voli at the time, he did need those nerfs. He was super oppressive if could get any kind of lead. Did they go a bit too far? Possibly, but Voli really needs a real rework. With the way he is now, hes either oppressive or dumpstered, there isn't much in between.
That's the problem with a lot of the older champions. For example SInged, who's kit is largely unchanged from beta, is getting a new passive on PBE, along with a grounding effect on his goo. I think that these changes should help him fit in better with the newer champion pool, without being a flat out buff. Alistar and Cho (more changes on PBE coming) also got similar level of changes.
Perhaps Volibear could get a change on that scale. If he is buffed, he would end up dominating the lane/jungle. He should get some more outplay/counterplay potential in his kit that would make him more fun to play, and play against. Just number buffs won't help him against the increasing amount of dash/blinks, and other sorts of wacky abilities in the game.
Yeah that is the problem, buff him hes op and feels unfair to play against, nerf him hes not fun TO play. Not sure a small kit adjust could help him, but yeah they did do some good stuff with ali and cho.
Thresh only 54%> if you looking at high ELO.
Voli was overall.
And Gold and below isn't used for balancing.
That's not true. If they didn't care about Bronze-Gold, then they would make Master Yi actually viable in Plat+, and ignore the consequences when he completely destroys Bronze/Silver. But that's not the case, and that's why Yi/Garen are useless in high ELO.

If they reworked yi and garen to make them having good WR on high elo, they won't have good WR on low elo anymore.
Okay? If anything that proves my point more, since they haven't done that yet. Yi and Garen are still balanced around low ELO.
Or were you actually trying to change the subject? Well, if you were, I would say that Riot is ALREADY trying to do what you said. The rework that removed AP Yi (years ago) also included some changes to make him more reliable at high skill levels. And Garen currently has changes on the PBE to give him some slight improvements to skill expression.

Ever hear of a good counterpick, but an underpowered champion overall?
look again i will say this 54% is if you suck he percentage is less than that , if you good would be 54 or more %
Once again someone trying to use Win rate and pick % as a justification for nerfs. That said, in this case you are correct that Thresh needs nerfs. I judge this based on how complex champions tend to have low winrates where as simple champions have high win rates. Thresh is very much so a complex champion and hard to play yet his numbers are so high it's easy for players to win with him. When you have such a complex champion with a high win rate there is something off with the champion. If I had to guess I'd say he just has WAY too high base numbers. He has higher numbers then every other support. Every one of his abilities has higher stats (some divided with extra passives) then any other support. It looks like this was gated with high CDs on a lot of his abilities leaving him little to do after his combo but such high numbers will inevitably give him an advantage over other supports. Even if you miss Q the missed damage can be made up with high R and E damage, he's also a ranged champion so he can trade easily and deal extra damage. He also has scaling for both armor and AP/soul built into his passive allowing even more damage. He has insane amounts of CC both hard and soft and a game breaking ability that can save his allies.
All this complexity and versatility should come at a cost and high cooldowns are not an effective enough gate anymore because tanky support items have lot of CDR now. Before, Tank support itemization had very little CDR but now it is easy to get 40% CDR with tank support items. This was a HUGE buff to Thresh because his power is gated by CDs. If you remove that he becomes top tier really fast.
