it'd be really nice to see him get something like what Aatrox Shyvana got; small modernizations that can prop him back up before he gets a bigger relaunch far off into the future, so I wanted to put out a few ideas for him. I want to preserve what makes Volibear who he is, but I also aim to establish a more defined purpose among the Juggernaut group, which he currently struggles with a lot due to not offering much that isn't covered by his peers. I want to keep him a champion who stacks purely health, since that's his established build path and doesn't really cause any problems.

Q - Rolling Thunder No longer enhances his basic attack. Instead, Volibear can re-cast Q at any time for the duration for a 1-second-delayed AoE fling, that launches all enemies caught in the area. Deals physical damage equal to a flat amount plus a % of Volibear's total AD. Volibear can move during the wind-up.

Rough visual approximation

https://i.gyazo.com/a0088e4766107857b4b0a2c5e2737709.png

Context - Volibear suffers from a very one-dimensional kit that either succeeds or fails. This change is meant to establish Volibear as a more disruptive Juggernaut; being able to directly force multiple enemies to move, and getting into a fight to constantly separate enemies from their team and wailing on isolated targets.

R - Thunder Claws Reworked: Initial burst given a 1 second wind-up; Volibear is immune to all displacements for the wind-up. Initial burst base damage raised; now deals damage to all enemies in 600 unit range. No scaling. AP ratio removed for both initial damage and on-hit; on-hit base damage reduced; now scales with 1/3/5% bonus health

Context - I wanted to give Volibear a little room to flex a skillcap, so in exchange for having the slight delay on the burst, he can time it smartly to prevent an incoming Dragon Kick from pushing him off the enemy team. I replaced his AP ratio with health and lowered his on-hit base damage to accommodate for better scaling into the late game with his regular build.

What do you think? If you like this, I might share some ideas to improve on other old juggernauts

Volibear rework idea: "Just kick him out of the League already!" Zilean ######Sorry I had to.

As an avid Volibear fan and player I love your suggestions, I think he's very subpar right now as his kit is extremely binary as you mentioned, he either does his job or fails miserably. Your suggestion will both allow Volibear to make more plays while adding counterplay, I have no objections what so ever. Please Riot take a look at this!

This is pretty good so far. It gives voli a bit of incentive to build some AD along with his health to reach maximum potential. What about his E? I think that it should be changed to the closer the enemy is to voli it should fear them for maybe 1.5 seconds.

I was on the fence about changing his E, since it's a pretty strong ability as is. It's instant, it's a fairly big AoE for having a 3 second slow attached. I didn't want to put a delay or anything on it because I already added 2 to him, and I want him to feel at least a little smooth to play with a QRE combo or something similar to that.

Actually, how about this;

  • For each enemy champion hit by Majestic Roar, Volibear gains X% slow resistance for Y seconds.

seeing how vulnerable he is to slows and whatnot, give him a way to alleviate that weakness only if he manages to get into the fight first

i will support almost any volibear change that would require him to build damage to 1 shot me...

i dont have a problem with his damage i dont have a problem with his tankiness... i have a problem with he DOES that damage WHILE being that tanky.

he either needs to be less tanky and keep his damage.. or deal less damage and keep his tank. right now he is just sitting at the best of both worlds

his BITE is the sole issue i have with him.

"right now he is just sitting at the best of both worlds"

0 pro play presence for years, even when he was at Ahri level winrates which was quite some time ago.

U do know he needs to wind up to bite? Ergo, you have 3 full autos of time to get out of his range before he can execute you, it's pretty much only a threat if you're alone, immobile and low. And guess what, juggs are supposed to excell at dueling, given they can reach their target.

Slows demolish Volibear, for more so than any other jug I would claim because his entire kit revolves around him managing to get on top of his opponents and he has nothing in his kit to alleviate cc, his super long cooldowns means he's useless when he can't so if he falls even somewhat behind he generally becomes utterly useless.

He doesn't provide even close to as much utility as most other juggs and his sustain is completely centered around his passive, which also has a very long cd, so what does he really have if he doesn't have his emergency tankyness and mediocre damage (Yes it's mediocre because there is no world in which a volibear will ever 100-0 you as fast as a Darius)?

His latest nerfes kicked him entirely out of toplane (where I preferred to play him) to become a B rank jungler (good in unorganized play, useless in organized play). I don't agree with your sentiment.

Um, being tanky & dealing a good amount of damage is the defining feature of a Juggernaut. What you need to do is not just stand there & let him hit you.

I don't know if I like the Q changes. It would feel a bit clunky, since Volibear is about smacking opponents and by having the wind-up it would just make him pretty weak. Would he be able to attack during the wind-up? The idea of flipping multiple opponents is interesting, but I don't think it's worth losing his DpS. As for the ult changes, why the delays? The displacement immunity is interesting, but if you're going to have that why not make it so that his Q has extra range for the attack which makes him dash and be immune during the dash? Or move it to his roar so he has a way to block incoming crowd control. It doesn't feel right on his ult.

The idea of flipping multiple opponents is interesting, but I don't think it's worth losing his DpS

all things considered Volibear doesn't usually build AS items (anymore), it's titanic and then full HP; he doesn't even buy a lot of AD. A 1 second wind up means that newQ will only slightly drop DPS, but given that that damage scales now it probably won't be a huge difference if not doing more damage. but you could easily fix the interaction with ult by making bonus damage apply to everyone hit by Q.

As for the ult changes, why the delays?

when I thought of it I imagined him calling down a big lightning bolt to empower him, and I thought it was pretty cool. also that I find his ult incredibly unsatisfying as-is when the opening 'burst' only hits for 100 damage and strikes 4 enemies. the way this one works is that in exchange for the slight delay, he has a little bit more burst to combo with and hopefully a more satisfying power overall.

his Q has extra range for the attack which makes him dash

juggernauts don't dash

juggernauts don't dash

Illaoi Are you looking for me?

I meant a really short range dash, like Illaoi's W.

he's already got an MS buff, i think it's more appropriate for him

possible buff the MS duration higher than 4s or make it scale with levels

AP ratio removed for both initial damage and on-hit

NO WAY. How am I supposed to play AP volibear then?

Illâoi Evê Siôn1 votes

I really like the Q concept. Would it still give him bonus Movement Speed during the wind-up?

Big Lincoln2 votes

Yeah, he has an MS buff for all 4 seconds regardless of when he uses his Q, so he'll still retain it even if he uses his Q immediately.

no, please no, just don't.

Not a fan of the R scaling with Health, but that's cause I'm sick of Zac atm. So disregard my opinion.

Big Lincoln2 votes

i don't think zac R scales with health?

I set the ratio really low since the on-hit base damage is also going to be lowered to accommodate higher burst on the first hit + the scaling , to a point where it will be lower early game, and then overtake it later on.

Good kit, but I'm unsure about the displacement. What if instead he could do something like have a mini-olaf r during the wind up, but he couldn't auto attack? It just isn't good design for him to counter 1 type of cc but not another. Makes him more situational than he needs to be, makes enemies with only knock ups as cc feel really bad when fighting him.

Big Lincoln1 votes

Good kit, but I'm unsure about the displacement

I got the idea from what Illaoi does when she ults; she can't be moved while going up, so she can outplay enemies like Lee Sin or Janna with their ults by using hers, but stuns, etc still work on her

I didn't want to make it too general because I think that'd be too strong, but displacements are probably the worst sort of CC for juggernauts to deal with besides slows, so I just thought it would be a good idea to give Volibear the means to outplay that kind of disengage so that his efforts to get in aren't immediately wasted.

Doozku1 votes

Oh i didn't know illaoi had that. Then the idea seems better than i thought. Yeah this rework seems pretty cool then.

I did one for mord too, if you want to check it out. should be the last thread I made

Played volibear lats season to jet myself up to diamond 4.

New season rolls around and makes me really notice just how poor the champion is suffering in the current meta. I am entirely in favor of these changes.

I like the adjustments too
