Why can varus poke so good?

Since burst mage has been a thing at bot lane now, people choose varus to have a good poke together with these mages as sustain supp cannot keep up with the damage .

I laned against a varus and he had 1 kill in 10mins into the game. He arrowed me from a distance and took (literally) more than half of my life. Why is this even a thing? Atleast jayce has to use 2 abilities to poke. Pokes don't bother me, its the fact that if a single poke can take half of your life from a screen away then it's really stupid. I know he has to channel the arrow and you have time to think where to run but you cannot just dodge all of his arrows.

Wow i wonder why the best adc right now is the one that can do damage from 5 screens away so he can avoid mages

He has 100% AD ratio on that poke. That's alot if you ask me

165%, when fully charged.

That and he was designed to be a poke monster. It's his theme. His Q is called Piercing Arrow. There'd be no point calling it piercing if it didn't go through shit like a hot knife in butter.

Jayce's theme is to poke then rush in with devastating melee damage. Varus' is to stay far as hell away and rain hell down on people. You can't really compare their poke ratios when their kits are designed for two different purposes.

I am comparing the poke's only not their kits or designs. Now take for example velkoz which i occasionally play. He has some great pokes but never does he take half your life from a screen away. Varus is an ADC and has an CC ult which requires him to get close (somewhat) and also ADC's are AA based for most of their damage. Even velkoz ult, with its range, won't take half of your life unless you stay in it for maybe 2sec? That's alot of time for counterplay. The reason varus is so oppressive now is because he builds full lethality build and with 1 Q takes literally half of your Hp (and it's not even an ult). Same can be said for Jayce.

Varus is more like an AD caster which is why he is mostly played mid against mages. Vel'koz Q is less strong but it's also much more spammable and he has one of the best bursts in the game over a thousand true damage ult. Varus has a strong Q, a passive W a pretty weak E and a nice ult to peel for himself.

You cant compare "just the poke" because this isnt how it works, power budget is a thing in champion's kit, jayce's poke is less strong because unlike varus, he can do other things well, like engaging and bursting.

So if you're playing against Varus, you know he's one of your greatest weapons against himself. If he is forced to be landing those arrows from far away, then you can get sight on his firing position and just avoid them pre-emptively. If he's going in close, you can either A) punish him then or B) make the arrow the focus of your plays.

If his support (in bot) can tag you that hard, you might want to worry more about your positioning and/or pick somebody with more fluidity in positioning or range. Varus might not like to play with Caitlyn, who can match his range or Twitch, who can play the vision game fairly well.

I'd imagine he's also very susceptible to jungle ganks, and especially from hard engage (Xin, Jax and Vi come to mind) so as independently powerful as he is in lane, he suffers against multiple targets who mind placement, and he rather struggles for damage if he wants to get his early CDR.

I can't help you with Jayce. He's strong and I think he just requires facing a playstyle that forces him aggressive so that he falters in engagement thanks to requiring a lot of mana to get virtually any work done.
