I don't like how similar champion kits still are

and it seems to have gotten worse with the subclasses that Riot deliberately injects champions with a lot of the same or very similar tools and strengths/weaknesses. it kind of just feels like the game's blending in to be too similar and we aren't sure why there's a lack of real diversity. And I don't mean, like, diversity of champions, but playstyles. Champion diversity really isn't that difficult when most of them play/feel the same; when part of a subclass is good it usually stands to reason that the rest of them are at least decent, even if they're overshadowed. But that's also one of the biggest problems; even if the lesser champions are still good or playable, there's no reason to actually play them because a champion with marginally different tools is just objectively better, either by having directly stronger tools or having a much easier time actually putting them to good use

divers, enchanters, marksmen and vanguards, even a lot of mages all seem to struggle with this problem

juggernauts and wardens manage to be unique even if I still personally feel Riot's a bit stingy with them

how do you feel about this? I would like to see more unique, defining strengths rather than marginal variances of samey kits.

this is what i love about assassins

they all have their own niche

Katarina AOE damage+counters healing Khazix generalist cuz evolution, i don't like this design Talon roaming Zed counters high ad champions like jhin Rengar counters burst with his W, and potentially CC like malz ult with his W Fizz counters stealthed champions because he's the only assassin that can reveal stealth with ult

Akali Shaco need a rework

Big Lincoln2 votes

I like Shaco far better than any other assassin

my only qualm is that his trap setups aren't nearly as important as they should be.

stealth champs shit on fizz tho hehe

id say his real niche is the engage from a long range ult

You should add Twitch into the assassin bit, whose niche is 4 shotting your entire team from stealth while leeching HP like no tomorrow when fed.

Heh.

I lost a lot of faith in Riot when they reworked my old main, Xerath, into the most generic of siege casters, removing many unique aspects of his kit. Then, during the mage rework, they hardly gave him anything. Feels so bad.

Results of old designs that are showing cracks.

Not to say every new design is better or immune from this mistake, but there's a reason we're getting so many reworks.

Big Lincoln1 votes

new designs seem even worse about it

Camille, Galio, tank updates all too similar with other champs

Ralanr1 votes

I don't really forgive the tank update for it's design choices and I still think Camille is just Irelia 2.0.

I still like Galio though. If I had to change anything, I'd change his Q to be something more close ranged since his harass is bothering people the most.

Galio needs changes to be more specifically desirable into heavy AP or magic comps. if it were up to me id give him something like old Maokai ult storing enemy damage, but only for magic damage, and instead of it being a recast for burst it enhances his Q or passive

Ralanr1 votes

Literally all they need to do is lower the base DR on his W and ult and up the magic resist scaling on them to make him more niche to pick into AP comps.

This is why Riot is doing reworks, because most of the old champs have this problem, especially the bruiser category of champions.

But every time Riot does rework, "Riot ruined my champion forever" people will come out of the woodworks. I mean seriously, who the hell are the people that actually defend old Urgot and his utterly broken kit that was balanced to be UTTERLY TRASH to become a 6 years old meme, claiming that they main Urgot and that he's their favourite champ or something? Apparently the Board and social media is full of them, it's almost like Urgot actually had a tangible playerbase because he clearly didn't for obvious reasons.

Christ.

because some reworks are trash and make them more homogenous

The trash ones are pretty much all in the class updates. Individual updates so far have been mostly good in terms of updating the champ and giving them identities of their own in my eyes.

Eh, Kindred and Rek'sai haven't been that much of an improvement from my understanding.

"Mostly good".

I do consider Rek change good tho, because that actually differentiated her identity from that old generic semi-global teleport ulti of hers that so many champs have already (that also made no thematic sense to Rek), something OP is precisely asking for.

Honestly the only problem I have with Rek'sai now is that her tunnels seem really out of place now.

I think they're okay because it still has its uses (you can track where people are since they are pretty much obliged to clear it before it infests the map, and use those sneaky gank/invade routes if not cleared). But a stronger theme tired with gameplay would be better.

But hey, I'm not complaining tbh. I think it's fine.

I honestly disagree. When I think of champs that blend too close to each other, I think of some of the older champs, especially the annoying group of divers that's really similar to each other. I think there are very few champs in the game that are simply better or worse versions of each other, and I definitely think that no two champions feel the same way when playing them.

The solution is for them to stop making champions. Honestly, 138 isn't enough? It's like they keep making champions to prove they're the best MOBA or something. What other moba has to constantly rework their champions? I had to stop playing so many champions I loved playing because reworks made them utter shit to play or their uniqueness was destroyed. The cycle will never stop unless they stop making champions, period. IMO.
