you dont need his ult to engage ... you need ult to engage an entire team or disengage from an entire team... it is a zoning and flanking tool
his old ult made him get into the middle of shit and made him fight and tank damage instead of ccing from afar
i engage on maokai with Flash W all the time and then use ult to cc lock enemies into choke points/ against walls to allow them to die
