The update sona needs

Sona is clearly a problem case for riot not knowing how to put her in a better place. I think a real part of the issue with her is the extreme mechanical simplicity of her kit means that she is in a make or break state based on the numbers on her abilities as we are seeing now. Her power chord interaction with her abilities is supposed to encourage thinking about which ability you choose use it with but late game the best general way to play sona is to use her abilities off of cool down. And with her low cooldowns it is how she often sees synergy with sheen, and simply looks to have maximum uptime of the power chord bonus damage hence the use of abilities off of cooldown.

I think a simple tldr of what sona's passive aims to achieve is taking smart advantage of her low cooldowns, while making deliberate choice of what ability you want amplified by power chord at the time so it isn't so mindlessly spam of QWE.

Sona needs an update badly to properly live up to that design.

POWER CHORD Every 20 seconds sona's next ability is empowered, gaining bonus strength and instead of costing mana returns 50% of it's cost. Power chord has it's cooldown reduced by 1/2/3 (at levels 1/5/10) every time sona cast an ability.

Hymn of Valor Sona and each tagged ally champions send out two bolts of sound that deal magic damage to the nearest enemies, prioritizing champions. Power chord - Staccato: Sona and each tagged ally next auto within 3 seconds deal bonus bolt damage also. All bolts deal 40% increased damage. MAGIC DAMAGE: 15 / 25/40 /60 /85 (+ 50% AP)

Aria of Perseverance Sona and tagged allied champions receive a shield lasting up to 1.5 seconds and healing for the remainder of the shield value after. Power chord - Diminuendo: Shield increases by 0.5% for every 1% of target's missing health. SHIELD STRENGTH: 30 / 60 / 90 / 120 / 150 (+ 30% AP)

Song of Celerity Sona and tagged ally champions gain bonus movement speed for decaying over 2.5 seconds. Power chord - Tempo: Movement speed no longer decay's and now last 5 seconds. BONUS MOVEMENT SPEED: 16 / 17 / 18 / 19 / 20% (+ 7% per 100 AP)

Crescendo Cooldown 100 seconds at all ranks Active: After a 0.2-second delay, Sona plays an irresistible chord in the target direction, dealing magic damage to all enemy units struck and stunning them for .5 seconds. Passive: Crescendo gains empowered effect depending on the previously cast ability. hymm of valor - gains 50% increased damage | aria of perseverance - reduces effected enemy target's damage output by 20% (+ 4% per 100 AP) for 3 seconds. | song of celerity - increases the stun to 2 seconds. MAGIC DAMAGE: 100 / 150 / 250 (+ 60% AP)

May I ask if there is ever a reason to use the W empowered R? The E empowered R reduces their damage output by 100% for 2 seconds.

honestly good call out on that. The DR and length could reasonably be both increased.

I have a few other questions if that's ok. It's from stuff I've gathered through talking to Sona players:

  1. How wide are the auras? From what I gather Sona players miss the larger auras.
  2. Why does Aria of Perseverance work as a shield that gets auto-converted to health if not used? Shield counterplay is to wait it out, but this one auto-converts to HP, removing that option for opponents.
  3. What are her rough base cds? Are they all identical (QWE all same cd) like how it used to be?

  1. Aura size/ranges are unchanged from live

2)aria of perseverance is actually taking what it does currently and adding more counterplay for opponents in my opinion. The more the shield is damaged the weaker the heal will turn out. Instead of a fat heal+shield all in one go. So the counterplay is less like janna shield (wait it out) and more like sion shield (try to break the shield)

  1. outside of the ult the base skill cooldowns are all the same as live with the current R bonus CDR removed.

think is should link this to the sona mains subreddit to get a wider sample of opinion responses?

ok.

Sion's shield (I'm pretty sure) is the only one in the game with that form of counterplay, and that's due to it exploding to deal damage at the end.

So this would still lock her into Q being the "strongest" cast. Just mentioning this since it technically warps her available powerchords since it's far more likely for Q to be up when the passive is too. Something to keep in mind.

If you'd like to get some strong opinions on it then yes. You'll also learn a ton about Sona and her playerbase.

However, be extra careful to be very thankful and receptive to feedback if you do. Keep an open mind. Make sure it's clear that it's not a riot rework and just a hypothetical one and you'd appreciate their help with it.

It's a very passionate subreddit and the wounds from past reworks still pain Sona mains (rightfully so).

I wish you luck.

On the point of Q being the strongest cast thanks to it's uptime i generally agree. But i think (hope) the way I proposed the other skill idea's allows her to have a notably higher skill ceiling. Higher damage is of course an eay stat to notice but the other skills i think would have notable enough utility that if you had open options Q isn't always the winning answer for the best option.

Thank you by the way for the respectful and thoughtful responses on your end :)

I see. Yes, hopefully it would end up as such.

No problem. That goes two ways^^ I enjoyed our discussion as well.

If you do decide down the road to post it on r/sonamains I'd be very interested in the discussion which takes place around it.

I said it before, make her q a skillshot, boom problem solved. Hardly anyone complains about her other abilities, its how easy she can poke and damage people, make that skill shot, 90 percent of her problems go away.

I downvoted your post for saying sona q should do 15 damage when it used to do 80

I would tell you to go play janna becasue you dont seem to understand sona but janna already hits harder than current sona

Magic Damage: 60 / 115 / 170 / 225 / 280 (+ 50% AP)

sona would feel terrible if she walked up to someone and stood there auto attacking them with her 1.2k hp bar that would be instant death in even platinum

she is an assassin duelist that can be played support not some wonky damage over time kit

You clearly chose not to read carefully or you would realize i changed the bolts to scale up with the number of tagged allies. At 2 allies it would be stronger than live.

I want personal performance so I can 1v9 not have to worry about what my 50% win rate teammates are doing that are drooling on themselves

Any champ that can realistically 1v9 is for sure set to have harsh nerfs in the near future. If you don't like balance and choose to be a keyboard drooler, ornn is right up your alley.

I already 1v9 as sona every game in d2/d3 elo and have an 80% win rate

sona is fine as is if you play her optimally

I'm sorry, but this is very bad. Yeah, Sona's kit is outdated, but this isn't good, either.
