If you were to be part of a Volibear VGU.. What would you add or change?

Best Ekko NA··2 votes·2,480 views

Volibear hasn't been reworked ever in the history of League of Legends.

Voli hasn't survived well either (currently 26th win rate in the Jungle), and it's about time Riot made our face tanking bear into something worthy of his reputation.

What are some skills or changes that you would add which would make Volibear a better more unique champion?

I think of the things I'd do would be...

Weaken Volibear's passive, but make it potentially stronger. Something like it heals less, but it has respectable scaling with HP, or maybe it extends if he damages people with his abilities.

I think his Q is respectable, it's a bit weak later in the game, but personally I think it's good early-mid. Maybe give it a good AD scaling to help with it late game?

I don't really like the W, I think if it was more like xin Q, with the bite at the end, plus an AS steroid would make it fairly solid.

With some dmg added to his roar to make it a bit more then CC (maybe extend the CD early)

Ult could do with some serious changes though. Maybe once you activated it you'd start building charge (More if you hit people with your abilities) that would extend into a massive chain lightning effect on your next auto.

Personally, I don't see how Volibear's passive has anything to do with a "Lightening Bear". They call his passive Call of the Storm, but it has nothing to do with a storm at all. I think it'd be better if they just removed his passive in general since it doesn't have anything to do with his thematic.

His Q makes more sense, because throwing a person is something a bear would do. Same for his W, seems bear like (since bears bite).

Don't care much for his E, I think it's boring and unoriginal. There's some room to do something cool with Majestic Roar.

Volibears ultimate feels not very creative as well, I think they should turn it into something more outspoken and interesting instead of just giving him a Statik Shiv on his R. Would be pretty neat if a huge lightening storm occurred around Volibear in a radius of him after he used his ultimate, causing AoE lightening bolts to strike down both randomly around him and also nearest to where he was auto attacking.

Well Lightning is a "Jolt" of energy. His passive lacks the visuals to support it, but wouldn't it be cool if when it activated volibear was struck by lightning every few seconds. Receiving a burst of MS and health? Extending the longer he's in combat.

Bears aren't known for throwing jack shit. In fact the only animals in the entire world that can really call "throwing Stuff" to be their forte you get... Humans. >Tangent begin! (In fact some evolutionary scientists, not unreasonably, believe that humans evolved getting really good at throwing shit and as a consequence got more intelligent. Since whilst it's so basic and mundane to us, to the VAST majority of the animal kingdom throwing shit you picked up with over 70% accuracy is really fucking hard.) <Tangent over

I can agree with his E though, perhaps a more offensive oriented version of WW E? The thing is I believe Voli should remain somewhat simple similar to when WW was reworked.

As for the ult I agree very much. Maybe make his theoretically new passive trigger more often inside the storm, but weaker outside of it (for the duration of the ult.) Turning it into a longer ranged, but less murder Illaoi ult.

You are right, bears don't toss things but they do knock over dumpsters. lol

Fish are weak against lightening and bears, so Volibear should get some new interactions with Fizz and Nami too.

Well yeah, but given that its his ENGAGE I'm pretty sure if Voli Q was a knock back instead of a flip it would be... Well let's say underwhelming.

I do like the idea for new interactions though. New interactions never hurt.

On a side note can you give me your thoughts on the ideas I actually gave though? I'm curious and deprived of answers ;_; it hurts

Well, the ideas you gave seem more fit for a champion adjustment than a rework. I think if he just flat out had the changes on his passive and W like you suggested he'd be wayyyyyy super strong, similar to Udyr with his Q early game. They aren't bad ideas, might work if the numbers on his damage, healing, and attack speed weren't too much but to me, he really needs his abilities completely re-hauled more than just getting some slight adjustments.

First thing I think he needs is a better fantasy. We have Anivia, who embodies the frost, and Ornn, who is basically a spirit of the mountains and the forge. Volibear -- who I'd frankly rename Volibar to be less silly-sounding -- should likewise embody the storm itself, which means more latent energy flowing through him.

Once you've nailed that down, then and only then would I start to consider a kit, which would probably be aimed at playing up his role as an initiator with strong multi-target skirmishing capabilities.

Then what about Kennen ? Isn't he supposed to be some kind of storm rat?

Sure. But "Lightning" isn't really a super narrow theme, and Kennen is another character I think needs a thematic redesign. I think "lightning ninja" and "living embodiment of a Freljordian storm" can be very different.

The special thing about Voli is that he can build tank only and is still a 1on1 monster! This should stay that way. He should still be this unstoppable force that chase down squishys and fighters on all fours and slaughter them. Mandatory AS on a non AD/Autoattack-champ is questionable.

ABILITIES:

  • Q: I think his Q (flip) is his most iconic ability and shouldn't change much.

  • W: Personally i like his W very much (because it's a save kill steal) but maybe it could change a bit. Volibear needs attack speed for his W (so he can use it faster) and his R (so it procs more often), also for jungle clear, but attack speed on a champ who doesn't build or scale good with AD feels kinda wrong. I like that it depends % on his HP. This ability is the reason why Voli is so special. He can go tanky/HP and still deal DMG.

  • E: His E was pretty boring before that mini rework. It's still not very special but it's pretty usefull. Now you have a short time to position yourself for Q while enemy is in the mini knockup (flash on enemy > instantly hit E so he can't flash away > flip him with Q)

  • R His R is his most boring ability (maybe non Volibear players can remember it better than E or W because you can SEE it better but that doesn't mean it's iconic). Don't get me wrong: I don't say it's "weak" because it's Voli's best ability to win fights/duells but it's fucking boring since it is just a DMG buff and it should be replaced by something completely different. But it needs DMG or, if it doesn't, another ability (W or E) needs to be his new DMG source. Because Voli without his R DMG is garbage. But it has to be more fun.

  • Passive His Passive, i have to admit, is kinda iconic BUT it doesn't really fit to Volis playstyle. I don't really like it. Since Voli is designed to engage in the enemy team pretty fast to lock down and kill a squishy behind the Frontline, he often is alone for a few seconds. He needs something that gives him sustain in this early seconds, not something that proccs at the very end. Atm it's like: You running in with Voli > you fight a few seconds > your HP is dropping > you run out while dropping > your Passive proccs while you are running out > you regenerate/wait between your Ally's > you can go back in fight again with 50% HP. That's not how an all-in armored bear should fight. And if you just stay in fight you will die because the passive is too slow to unleash his full potential against the whole enemy team. I would like to see something like old Mastery: Courage of the Colossus http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Courage_of_the_Colossus_(Season_2017_Mastery) This would fit way better to his engaging playstyle and would give him enough sustain untill his team catches up. Also, a SHIELD as passive would fit awesome to his lore since he is the ARMORED bear!

MY PERSONAL IDEA FOR ULTIMATE REWORK:

When he hits R he gains the Power of the Storm and his next ability (Q/W/E) is enhanced. It's like he can chose between 3 different ultimates depending on situation. It's a bit like Shyvana but only his NEXT ability is strongly enhanced.

  • R+Q: If he press R>Q his engage becomes way faster and he can flip an enemy far behind him (except he stops him midair with his E). Also he stacks Tenacity while running. With this enhanced Q he can flip enemy's several meters behind him right into his allyed team. Or he can flip an enemy over a wall to save himself.

  • R+W: Since he has no DMG source anymore from old chainlightning R his R>W needs to become the new DMG-Ult. If Voli press R>W his autoattacks gets bonus magic DMG depending on his HP for X seconds. Every hit reduces CD on W so he can hit it again to bite/finish enemy targets on low HP (normal W).

  • R+E: If Voli press R>E he can use his E on enemy champions like he uses it on minions/monsters and can fear close(?) enemys away with his roar for X seconds.

CONCLUSION:

The best thing about this: With this R rework Voli wouldn't change very much (hi Galio/Poppy/Aatrox) but he would change very much (if you know what I mean). He would stay the same but also would be different and way more versatile and usefull, especially in lategame/teamfights.

He could decide for gap closing (Q), DMG (W) or Deff/CC (E). It would make Voli way more tactical cause you have to be good in decision-making: "should i go for R>Q to catch that dude? But then i don't have the DMG (R>W) to kill him, but my team can"

OR

"Should i use my R>W now to go full berserk but then i have no CC left to retreat"

(Sry 4 bad English)

I think this idea is very interesting (Giving him power up R like Heimerdinger), but I'm not sure that it really solves any of Volibear's current problems. Many crowd controls are displacements, so even with empowered Q, he probably won't be anymore successful than he now. His Empowered W would basically do the same thing as his ultimate does now, but without the AoE damage. Volibear's E already has a knockback, and his Q is a flip, I'm not certain changing the flip into a fear will improve him a great deal.

BigFBear1 votes

You mean "change the >knockup< into a fear"?

The knockup is very very short. Fear could be like 2,5 seconds or so.

Yes W is the same like now but only on single target. I think it's ok if it's not super special since he has 3 different Ults then. In my opinion Voli was always strong in 1on1. He run in, grabs a squishy and shredds him. AoE doesn't really fits to his playstyle imho. Maybe they could buff the DMG a bit compared to now, since it's only singletarget then. Maybe they could implement something more fun, but it needs to be connected to his HP so he can still build tanky.

How would you change voliboo... I think that its true his power fantasy doesnt match up to what he is, mostly because hes been retconned into a god.

Anyway...

Passive: Chosen of the Storm Volibears basic attacks apply a stack of Ursine storm for 5 seconds. Enemies afflicted with Ursine storm emit lightning which chains to up to two additional enemies, dealing 20-90+1/3/5% max HP as magic damage as an on hit effect.

Q: Rolling thunder Volibear gets on all fours, granting him up to 100% movement speed in a target direction over 10/9/8/7/6 seconds. If Volibear collides with an enemy champion or structure he deals 80/120/160/200+10% max health as physical damage. If Rolling thunder damages an enemy champion it applies a stack of Ursine storm.

W: Storm caller Volibears basic attacks apply Ursine storm to himself, granting him +2/2.5/3/3.5/4% base attack speed per stack. Volibear can have a maximum of ten stacks on him at a time. When Volibear has ten stacks of Ursine storm he can activate this ability to cause lightning from chosen of the storm to apply and trigger chosen of the storm. Lightning triggered by storm caller is a different color.

E: Majestic roar Volibear channels for up to 2 seconds, gaining unstoppable for the duration. If he finishes channeling Volibear lets out a majestic roar, fearing enemies within 300 range of him for 1 second and dealing 100/150/200/250/300+10/12/14/16/18% of enemies current health as physical damage.

R: Descent from the storm Volibear calls on the power of the storm dealing 200/250/300+5/10/15% of bonus health as magic damage, increasing his size by 20% and surrounding him with violent storm cloud that applies Ursine storm to nearby enemies for 10/15/20 seconds. While descent from the storm is active Volibears basic attacks gain an additional 125 range and lightning triggered from chosen of the storm slows enemies by 20%.

So this is basically moving his ultimate into his passive? The E idea seems a little broken since there would never be any reason for Volibear to not finish the channel. Also double max health damage abilities might also be too strong. With 2 max health sources of damage, he'd never have a reason to actually build any damage. Might work if he was forced into scaling mostly AD though.

You can still have channels cut off if youre unstoppable, but thats why it doesnt have scaling. My suggestion is to make volibear more into a juggernaut - health scaling (His ONLY scaling....) is an important part of it. Much like mana scaling, health scaling is often considered "to strong" because its used in conjunction with other kinds of scalings. Also his passive would be scaling off his HP, his Q would be scaling off his HP, and his ult would be dealing enemy % current HP. His E and Ult do not have scaling to make up for the strength of his passive and Q. I thought having only his abilities which were meant to damage actually DO damage would be an acceptable budget.
