Hi, I'm Galio

DeusVult··81 votes·4,516 views

Tired of getting all in'd by the enemy team full of assassins/divers? Want to play a tank, but still do some pretty good damage?

Well let me introduce myself. I'm Galio, the underplayed misunderstood champion of your dreams. I excel at shutting down mid lane AP assassins, and even work against most AD assassins because they are melee.

My high base damage on Q allows me to farm and push from safety early in the game, and once i hit 6 the fun begins.

Enemy assassin dives you under that pesky no damage dealing tower? Press R

Enemy team dives your backline to get that instagib? Press R, and give your adc 2 seconds to wail on them while they wail on you.

And did I mention that they heal you when they attack you?? Even the enemy towers heal you, weak things that they are.

Against a full AD team??? Well never fear. Even with your passive becoming lackluster, you are still a force to be reckoned with. Simply build as an AP tank and watch as the enemy team can do nothing to you.

Watch as your enemies rage in /allchat because your game changing ability to mash the R key, about how their tenacity didnt work and how strong item 3075 item 3001 is on a 2 second AoE taunt where you heal for the taunted damage.

So next time you queue up for Summoner's Rift (btw, wtf are summoners???) give me a shot. Because I'm Galio, and I can be so much more than just the least played champ in league of legends

If Galio gets nerfed just because he's effective against AD and AP assassins, I'm just going to fucking quit, because Riot is clearly catering to the assassin crowd.

Edit: So many upvotes :O

I don't play Galio, btw. I used to play midlane Viktor Malzahar Kassadin religiously before the start of this Pre-Season 6.

Kassadin's the only one I continue playing, because Rito had the 'genius' decision to make AD mids like Zed and Yasuo the only way mid should be played.

(Anyone else remember how almost EVERYONE was playing Yasuo mid + Warlord's Bloodlust? I still don't forgive Rito for that BS.)

Honestly considering buying Galio so I can finally have some revenge against people like "Xxx_ZedMain69_xxX".

GIve this person more upvotes!

JoBilly5 votes

Seconded... well, not main, but I love to pick him in a game with DoT champs :D

Imagine a game where the enemy has a Singed, Brand, Teemo, Twitch, and...trying to think of a common jungler with a DoT but nothing hitting me at the moment...Amumu? Closest thing I can think of in that regard.

Whatever, that would make me cry out and thank the enemy for all the immortality late-game.

I may be wrong on this, but I don't think Twitch poison heals you as Galio. I tried it a few months ago and it didn't seem to do any healing.

This is the first time weve seen any type of assassians for a whole season minus leblanc

S3ntinel2 votes

Even though people don't like this comment, it is true. Look at the pick rate of assassins last season. No one played them (except for me cause you know mains) because assassins against tanks doesn't work too well. People are now complaining because the adc's got buffed, so now its an adc meta. This means that counter-picking assassins into adc's, which they don't like too much. Sorry adc's, we know you just want to kite around a tank, laughing while they can't get in range of you while you melt their health bar. But as soon as we burst you down, you get pissy and say that isn't fare. But all the while the tanks are thanking us because they get to do their job without getting blown up. You're welcome adc'. We're here until you leave. Simple as that.

P.S. If you really want to play ADC and not get blown up by assassins, play kalista. It is impossible to catch up to her as assassins if she kites well enough.

I especially love how everyone is still complaining about Yasuo. His win rate in middle lane is currently 45%, only above Morde, Ryze and Azir. He is placed at both number 1 (mid) and number 3 (top) in the list of champions with the most deaths. Very low on kills, below Teemo mid.

Even Yasuos with 150 games on him are still on a 49% win rate in mid, and only at 52% in top.

Same goes for many other "OP" champions: their overall performances tend to be very poor, even for their diehard mains. Only exception is Zed, who indeed has a very high win rate and good performace, even for unexperienced players.

S3ntinel1 votes

...As a Yasuo main, I appreciate this so much. I'm so sick of this Yasuo is op bullshit because people don't know how to play against him. He really isn't plus he takes a lot of skill to really do well with him.Yasuo

UrPalAl1 votes

I hope you're not trying to defend Viktor, because he damn well deserved that nerf. Hey, I played him too, but people really didn't realize how OP he was for the longest time.

Limitanei1 votes

No, as much as I hated the nerf I got used to it after a while.

What bothers me more is the loss of mana and flask, plus green wards.

What I find funny is how Riot says they find "blue trinket is too strong and yellow trinket is too weak in mid/late game". It makes me chuckle because it makes me say, "well no shit, Sherlock." They take away green wards and they find that a trinket that can be spammed with a somewhat low cooldown and large placement range is "OP"? No shit, Sherlock.

UrPalAl1 votes

Practically no one (especially in higher elo's) bought mana pots, and if you did, they increased champion's mana pool to make up for it.

The idea was the blue's would be cleared instantly, so they were weaker, but what has happened is that people sometimes forget to clear them, and people also forget to place down yellow trinkets. Yeah, blue's are stronger, but the idea was that people would be able to combat that. Riot kind of expected to much out of us. Blue's just need a slight cooldown increase, and yellow's should scale way better.

As someone that actually plays Galio, here's some stuff holding him back as a champion:

Q: Sure it's got a lot of damage, and the slow is great too, but this thing has got to have the worst hit box in the entire game. You've got to have 300 ping to get hit by this thing consistently.

Let's increase that missile speed a bit.

W: An amazing spell for Galio, not so much for anyone else. For enemies it's extremely boring. Oh look, Galio used his W and now I can't attack him without healing him. Nice, I finally got a chunk of his health and now he's chilling in minions regaining all of it back. For allies it just feels lackluster. Sure you're getting a shitload of armor and mr, but unless you're a fellow tank, that's not going to do you much good. I call it the 'shield of false hope' when I put it on my allies. They expect it to help them, but really it just helps Galio, and if it's on an ally, Galio probably doesn't need the healing. See what I mean here?

I say shift some of his mana costs off Q and E onto this ability, then make it so when put on an ally, it heals Galio for half and the ally for the other half. This way in lane it's not as abusive while also opening him up to actually be able to respond to the heavy wave clear often found in mid/top lane without going oom.

E: HOLY SHIT DOES THIS ABILITY FEEL AWFUL TO USE OR WHAT? A movement speed ability that actually hinders your movement!

Lower the missile speed, remove the cast time. Boom, balanced and feels good to use.

And finally, the R: No one is going to argue about the legitimacy of this ult. It's huge in teamfights; a full 2 seconds of aoe taunt that's unaffected by tenacity and ends in a blast that most won't be walking away from. Now here's the problems. 1. Galio has absolutely no way of getting near his targets. He relies on the huge cooldown of flash to even attempt a good ult. and 2. Speaking of cooldowns, his ult cooldown is two full minutes at level 3. going up to two and a half minutes at level 1. That is absolutely massive. I hate to compare champs, but here's the rundown on similar ults with lower cooldowns and waves of initiating without blowing flash: Amumu Sejuani Malphite Zyra Morgana Orianna Yasuo See what I'm getting at here?

Lower the overall damage, lower the cooldown. Easy peasy.

These changes aren't about making Galio stronger, they're about making him more fun to play while not making him incredibly overpowered.

There is no comparison (discluding douchebag yasuo) to the team fight destroying that galio has. malphite's ult is less than a single second and does way less damage (if you build full ap you get equal damage) Morgana zyra and ori both rely on setting (obvious) things up for fights. What i would recommend is change his ult completely because spoiler alert it is just amumu's ult mixed with nunu's ult.

(not a galio player just someone who bans galio every game)

His ult is fine, its the rest of his kit that needs the boot.

You.... ban Galio?

I've gone against a galio who went 26/2 multiple times, nothing makes you feel more useless than going against a galio.

me:"ok guys we can just split push to win this"

team insists on 5 man grouping to fight him................

the main problem is most people don't know how to play against him, so yeah i ban him so my team doesn't feed him. (do the same thing for freaking yasugi and darius)

playing against galio is a very traumatizing experience. I can remember every game i've gone against a galio. it's that brutal.

I call it the 'shield of false hope' when I put it on my allies. They expect it to help them, but really it just helps Galio

This is definitely a clarity issue. It looks like a shield, but it's actually more like a Taric aura. Unless you've been building HP to work with those free resists, a Galio W probably won't be doing much for you in terms of making you tankier.

E: HOLY SHIT DOES THIS ABILITY FEEL AWFUL TO USE OR WHAT? A movement speed ability that actually hinders your movement!

Imagine if Udyr had to come to a full stop every time he changed stances; that would make him feel horrible to use. It's the same thing with Galio, if he didn't have to stop while using his MS ability he'd feel a lot better to play.

The main gripe that I have with Galio is that he's very player unfriendly.

  • He's gated by mana, and by that I mean he's actually gated by mana, unlike a lot of other mana champs that you have to work to go OOM with. You need to know how to manage your resource as Galio, and that's a huge strike against him when you're trying to pick out a champion to play.
  • His CDs are also pretty restrictive as well. If you use an ability, hit or miss, you're not using that ability for a while. This, combined with his mana issues, makes missing skillshots as him feel absolutely debilitating. A lot of other champs can miss skillshots with little penalty, Galio gets punished hard.
  • Galio's abilities seem like they want you to get into melee range so he can add a few autos between spells, but there's really little reason to do that other than attempting to pull off an ult. Galio is melee, but it feels like he should be ranged; if only to keep him safe from harass when he goes for CS. Maybe if he borrowed a Taric passive where he gets a item 3057 like effect or shorter CDs when he autos, then his melee attacks would mean something and reward him for using them.

Udyr <---- Is in the Guinness book of Records for fastest outfit change.

Silents4293 votes

Honestly my only issue with Galio has been how clunky it feels to use his E

It like you said hinders what it's suppose to be aiding in and that's speeding you up, but giving it a brief cast time sort of negates it, and the length it reaches is mediocre.

And when you do land it, there is no impact or feel, it just feels boring to land, His Q explodes on impact while his E is literally just a passing breeze.

Had a fun game with Galio support in ranked 5's a few days ago. Had a kalista adc and got ulted into the enemy team, and you know what I did? I pressed R like the game changing mofo I am! Galio OP!

Frostwoman8 votes

I think Galio is a great soloQ pick because nobody actually ever watches out for his flash ult.

However I think Galio is gated hard by high CDs and easily dodgeable spells. Additionally, a large amount of his power is reliant on whether his flash is up or not to set up a big ultimate.

If this guy had like a Leblanc W or some other dash, he'd definitely be broken.

DeusVult7 votes

Galio ult is really strong as a form of initiation, but honestly he works even better when the enemies come TO him because they are trying to get at the back line

also galio is MONSTROUS in aram because you can use mark/dash to get x thousand range ults, where your ult eats up the whole lane

I love me some Galio , but his ult is so easy to cancle it's kind of pathetic.

Honestly, if you want heavy duty disruption in teamfights, there often isnt any reason to pick him over Malphite or Alistar right now.

He's very strong situationally, but less reliable in general. A good ult can win a game, but it's trickier to do than a Malphite ult, given Galio's lack of gap closer.

The high burst AP champs he counters heavily can be countered quite well by simply playing safely against them, and staying on top of roams to deny them an early snowball.

Galio hard counters any DoT champ in the game because of his shield.

He's a relic of an age where mobility wasn't big, spells did big damage, and mana costs were YUGE.

I like Galio I just wish his E was far more effective, or completely different, and didn't stop him to cast defeating the purpose of the ability in some situations for personal use. I also think his mana costs can be a bit... much, particularly in a team fight.
