Autofill. Is. Not. Healthy.

Autofill will, within the game's current state, do more harm than good.

Now, you may say, "Of course not! It's totally productive in the sense it pushes people to broaden their game knowledge and branch out from their comfort zones! Isn't that healthy?" Sure, in an already-healthy environment; when done in a manner that doesn't feel as though it's a form of punishment.

We're here to play an online game, and therein ENJOY ourselves through our CHOICES. Autofill often will forcefully leave players in a role they aren't comfortable with (at the detriment to their team, given .. hey, surprise, this is a team game) or in a role they currently own no champions for, not familiar with the itemization for, or don't possess the runes for. Don't tell me, "Oh please, people seldom get autofilled" when I see on a fairly consistent basis, "Autofilled again already? Really?.." I'm a support main, and the amount of autofilled ADCs I've crossed paths with is outrageous.

It's like, whilst playing a fighting game, having a random, limited assortment of characters to choose from each time you find yourself back at the Versus screen (despite having unlocked everyone). Nobody fucking wants that.

Atop that, this feature extends to ranked play; the land of test-your-mettle. Again, here we are with a potential inherent disadvantage, yet in the more competitive area of the game. How the fuck does that make** ANY** sense? If this was implemented to reduce queue times for higher-elo players, then keep it out of where the majority resides.

I feel like autofill is fine in a normal match. We haven't needed autofill for the entire length of this game's life, I don't know why we need it now.

In a ranked, people want to play the roles/characters they're best with. Autofill is like RNG that is thrown in just to make your chance to win that much smaller.

I can count on one hand the number of times I've played ADC and I've played this game since beta. If I get autofilled to ADC, I play a mid lane mage anyway. I do well - but it pisses off my teammates because it's not meta.

If you're going to leave autofill, do something about opening up the meta so if someone wants to pick a character they're good with in a role they don't want to play, they don't automatically lose or are forced to dodge.

we also never had role selection for the entire length of this game's life, which is why both were implemented at the same time (or autofill was pretty soon after role selection). People don't realize just how much of a strain role selection puts on matchmaking, compared to the old way which was just to throw 10 people of relatively same mmr in the same match.

This kind of has to do with my previous point, except I wanted to stress the importance of autofill in higher elos. Before role selection, sometimes queues up to 30minutes would occur even without the new system. I think at one point, bjergsen or someone had a 2-3hour queue time. Throw in role selection and that time increases significantly. Now you could argue that it isn't needed for lower elos, but at the same time autofill doesn't really effect lower elos because it's not really necessary. If there is no strain on matchmaking, there is a very low probability of being autofilled.

you can't complain about autofill ruining your games if you ruin your games when you get autofilled. Ya, sure it sucks, but you shouldn't deprive a team from any role, even if it's not your preferred role. It's also important to communicate. It never hurts to say "hey guys, I got autofilled into adc but it's honestly my worst role. Mind if I have X or Y please?".

But honestly, learn how to freaking support. It's not a difficult role, just go Blitzcrank Soraka Braum Alistar or some of the other 5+ supports that are easy to pick up. It wont kill you to play 5 normal games as support to practice.

Bottom line is, Autofill is needed for queue times to be bearable in mid-high elos and barely effects low-elo games in the longrun. It provides much more than it takes away. Your comment was pretty well written though.

What? We had role selection for -over a year- with no issues. Autofill wasn't turned on until season 6 ended.

High elo - sure, autofill can be used if there's a shortage. However, at plat elo and below, I guarantee there is no problem with filling the needed roles. I'm certain people would be fine with 5-10 min queues if they were guaranteed to get the role they wanted.

I do communicate when I get filled to ADC that it's my worst role. If I end up having to play it anyway, I'm going to play a champion I've played literally 3,000 games over a champion I have not played once. I am sorry, but I think it's ruining the game for my team if I pick MF ADC when I've literally never played her. I don't play ADC.

5 games as 'practice' doesn't even begin to hold a candle to the thousands upon thousands I've played on champs I'm actually well-versed in. And guess what? When I play LeBlanc support, I carry my lane as long as my ADC doesn't throw a tantrum because it's not meta.

No it isn't needed at all. That is my point. Autofill was always in place at higher elo's where there are 2-3 hr wait times otherwise. For 99.999999999% of players, autofill is useless tilting RNG garbage.

Nobody thinks or argues that autofill is good, the thing is it's necessary for the queue times.
