Can We Have a Passive Top Lane Champion?

Meep Man··5 votes·1,518 views

I feel like every Top Lane champion these days wants to bite the other person's nose off by 6 minutes in and then soak themselves in their enemy's blood. We don't have any passive Top Lane champions hardly any more. Nasus is the closest one, but these days he has begun to be more and more aggressive as well. I want a break.

DrMundo Chogath Illaoi Galio Heimerdinger Maokai Poppy Singed can all play pretty passively mostly farming close to tower. But yeah all the newer champs tend to be very much in-your-face fighters.

Any passive top laner won't be meta or at worst get nerfed into the ground because they can't be tower dived.

Kayle, Swain, and Vladimir all go top lane and play pretty passively to farm up so they can instead output a lot of damage in team fights.

Have you played against a Vlad or Swain recently? I have. And I have played as them as well. They cheese like crazy.

I play swain a lot on one of my accounts and I play as passive as possible. I never go in. I just wait until enemy is dumb enough to get bored of my farming and goes on themselves.

I mean I play to win so...

And it's pretty easy to push your opponent out of lane or kill him if he doesn't leave (as swain).

'Play to win' 'pushes out as swain' so you're a roamer? With swain?

I just got schooled by the silver/bronze player. Shit if I played to win like that id make it far.

Teamfighting as swain isn't important?

Your taking about pushing or killing your lane opponent. That's not what swain is about. You just passively farm and then just murder everyone after 2 items. He is as passive as u get.

Eh? Taking advantage of your range to easily dominate lane, denting farm and potentially getting some kills? I don't know why anybody would play passive on swain unless it's against a risky matchup.

Galiö1 votes

because swain isnt about getting kills. he is about being annoying and passive cause you cant go in on him.

If you can get a kill easily without any drawbacks why the fuck wouldn't you?

If it's free an ways fine w.e. but going for it isn't worth it. It's better to just lay down a q and aa until you're too strong to deal with. Rinse and repeat. This guy is asking why there isn't a passive top laner. There is a few bit people don't play passively. Pre rework Galio was a great example of a passive top laner. Mostly o think what makes a good passive top laner is ease of farming, sustain and tankiness.. of u have range that's even better. Swain and pre rework Galio had all of these.

kayle is far from passive - you need to bully your opponent around as you push them in or their jungler will just camp and destroy you for farming. Swain is very much about bullying melee opponents and denying them farm. Vlad is again about zoning enemy melee champs off farm via q harass mostly. They can be played passively - the latter 2 more than the former - but they are not normally played that way nor do they achieve their full potential when they are played as such.

Quepha1 votes

Your definition of passive doesn't apply to any champion in any lane in the game. Vlad, Kayle, and Swain do not make aggressive plays in the lane phase, they just take free damage on the enemy the same way any other champion would do if given the opportunity. If they push too far forward they can be turned on and killed, and will die to ganks almost every time.

woodvsmurph1 votes

Vlad die to almost every gank? Lol. No, he is way safer than most other toplaners overextending.

Swain is in danger if he overextends sure - but you can say that about any champ. He's in no more danger than darius, riven (depending on opponents), renekton, gnar, etc. He lands his cc on the jungler and walks away or forces the jungler to take a different path to close the gap - buying himself more time. And his lane opponent is already chunked and playing way back to avoid swain's damage, so it's gotta be the jungler initiating most of the time.

Kayle - yeah she dies easy to ganks pre-6 if you have the cc and didn't let her chunk you out in lane so you can actually help your jungler out. But if she gets 6, she's decently safe and can buy a lot of time to either escape, wait for counter-gank, or just trade kills. The idea with her is you harass the enemy low while hard-pushing so that they either can't fight you, fight you but miss out on all the minions you shoved to their tower, or vice versa (minions and not fight you). Again - not really any less safe than a darius, renekton, gnar, etc. At least not after level 6.

He's only safe when he's playing safe. His W cooldown is very long and if he goes past the river against certain junglers it can still not be enough to save him.

I find Nasus and Yorick to be like that. With Nasus, as you mention, it's farm, then hit a spike and take a tower. With Yorick, I farm my Q and at the right time, press it again and throw my dudes at my lane opponent and go back to farming, if they engage just box them or if at 6 summon your 2v1 game changer. They die, you push towers, you push lane, go take rift herald, take towers.... it's all fun.

Meep Man1 votes

I guess I can agree with Yorick. You yourself aren't the one really going in and wacking people.

I want to have a champion who's goal isn't to aggressively take over the lane, or at least can usually survive without almost any deaths. Don't need kills, just want to chill a bit.

I want one champion like this, not everyone.

Do you have a min to talk about our Lord and savior Vladimir? Lol, no but seriously as long as its not another ranged top you can play as aggressive or passive as u want, sit in lane and do nothing but farm, and if u get ganked pop w and heal up on some minions

Dude we've had this 3 Dorans two tanks shove the wave in for way too long. Why would you want to play a lane in a way that makes you forget that it's a pvp game?

Meep Man1 votes

I want to defend my tower from the enemy if they get close. I want to make daring escapes and survive ganks. That's my PvP.

Yeah, "daring" is not the word that you are looking for.

Thats season 4. Sorry mate, the good ol' days are over. Fight hard or get outpressured is the name of the game now.

Samura Yukisuna1 votes

Nah. Pick Soraka support if you want to play passively. Just lazing around in top wont help your team win the game.

So you want to play as one of the gun turrets?

@thread I do like concept threads. SO heres a concept!

Name: Giblet the Urchin Role: Tank/roamer Faction: Ionia

Passive: Shiny scrounger Giblet scrounges gold from enemies and allies who die near him, gaining 3 gold whenever an ally dies and 6 gold whenever an enemy dies.

Q: Puppy-dog stare Giblet gives an enemy champion a puppy-dog look to garner pity. If the enemy champion is facing them then they become charmed for 0.5/1/1.5/2/2.5 seconds Cost: 80 mana Cooldown: 12 seconds

W: Urchin toughness Toggle Giblet hardens himself to pain, granting him a regenerating barrier that is equal to 5/7/9/12/15% of his bonus health. The barrier regenerates at 20% of health regeneration. Cost: 60 mana/1% of maximum mana per 5 seconds to maintain Cooldown: 30 seconds

E: Pick pocket Giblet steals 10/15/20/25/30% of an enemy champions held gold and deals 5% of his max HP as physical damage. two seconds after being pick pocketed an enemy champion will become taunted towards the nearest ally champion. The same champion cannot have their gold stolen twice within 120/100/80/60/40 seconds. Cost: 50 mana Cooldown: 8/7/6/5/4 seconds

R: Bread buy Passive: Giblet gains +10 1/s regenerating shield per bread purchase. This regeneration applies to other regenerating shields. Giblet buys an expensive, special bread usually only obtainable by the ionian nobility. Bread increases giblets HP, HP regeneration, armor, and magic resist by 20/30/40% for 10 seconds. Cost: 100 mana, 500 gold Cooldown: 120/90/60 seconds

This is called "uninteractive", though. people have been whining for this to go away on the boards and such. I once had a super passive game of maokai vs sion. we couldn't kill each other, ganks came and went, neither of us died. after a bit we just sat there and farmed. most boring shit ever.

or just play zero damage tryndamere. most passive shit ever.
