Mazlahar rework idea

So obviously malzahar seems to be a little strong atm, with one of the highest ban rates and a 52% win rate. I thought i'd thrown my idea out there as to a good solution to a lot of his current problems like his combo power, his voidlings problem with consistency, and his passive.

##( Passive ) Summon Voidling On every fourth ability use, Malzahar summons a Voidling that that lasts for 21 seconds or until killed. Voidlings grow in size after 7 seconds, gaining 50% bonus attack damage and 50% bonus armor. After another 7 seconds, they frenzy and gain 100% bonus attack speed. Voidlings target enemies based on a priority, descending order, Nether Grasp target > Closest Malefic Visions target > Malzahar's attack target > Proximity

( Q ) Call of the Void

RANGE: 900 / 400 COST: 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 MANA COOLDOWN: 9 ACTIVE: After a 0.5 seconds delay, Malzahar summons two orbs at the target location perpendicular to where he is facing, dealing magic damage to all enemies caught between the orbs and silencing them. MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 135 / 190 / 245 / 300 (+ 80% AP) SILENCE DURATION: 1.4 / 1.8 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3 (No longer refreshes Malefic Visions)

( W ) Null Zone

RANGE: 800 / 250 COST: 90 / 95 / 100 / 105 / 110 MANA COOLDOWN: 14 ACTIVE: Malzahar creates a zone of negative energy at the target location for 5 seconds, dealing magic damage every second to all enemies standing on it (capped at 120 against minions and monsters) TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 20 / 22.5 / 25 / 27.5 / 30% (+ 5% per 100 AP) of target's maximum health

##( E ) Malefic Visions RANGE: 650 COST: 60 / 75 / 90 / 105 / 120 MANA COOLDOWN: 15 / 13 / 11 / 9 / 7 ACTIVE: Malzahar infects the target enemy's mind, dealing them magic damage every half second over 4 seconds. TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 140 / 200 / 260 / 320 (+ 80% AP) If the target dies during this time, they pass Malefic Visions onto the closest enemy, refreshing the duration and restoring mana. MANA RESTORED: 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26

##( Ult ) Nether Grasp RANGE: 700 COST: 100 MANA COOLDOWN: 120 / 100 / 80 ACTIVE: Malzahar knocks down the target enemy champion and channels for up to 2.5 seconds, suppressing them and dealing them magic damage every half second while the channel holds. TOTAL MAGIC DAMAGE: 250 / 400 / 550 (+ 130% AP) (No longer refreshes Malefic Visions)

##Voidling Stats 250 - 1100 (based on level) Attack damage 25 - 110 (based on level) (+ 100% of Malzahar's bonus AD) 37.5 - 165 (based on level) (+ 150% of Malzahar's bonus AD) (after 7 seocnds)

Attack speed 0.831 1.496 (after 14 seconds) Range 100 / 1700 Armor 30 Magic res. 50 Mov. speed 451

Figured it was just easier to completely remove the passive, seemed unnecessary to the rest of the kit and fixed a portion of the problems in doing so. The base damage and scaling on the ult might be a little bit too high, but because it's single target with the Null Zone being detached from it, it made sense to give it decently high damage, more akin to an assassin ult than a mage ult, which likewise can be interrupted by an the target's teammates.

The increased delay on the Q (i think it's about twice what it is now) should make it easier to dodge and the increase CD and silence means it's still an important skill to land, but you should see no net change in the amount of CC it puts out.

His voidlings don't scale with AP anymore, so i compensated that lost damage for AP malzahar onto his E, by giving it some more base damage and a small scaling buff.

This new W should be a little bit more consistent than the current version, as, unlike the voidlings, it doesn't vary from being killed having done no damage, to summoned 10 voidlings which melt anything they come near until they time out.

Then the voidling changes also make it so that you can more reliably able to get some damage in, but will still fall off more in the late game, but not be as binary.

Edit: Oh, and almost forgot! I think that this would also allow for a new builds involving AD, by not only taking away the inconsistency of the current voidlings' health system, but i think it would also make building AD decently viable, and his AD scaling would actually deal physical damage, but also make it feel unique and different from AP.

You'd basically have two champions bundled into the price of one! You could even meet in the middle hybrid builds combining tanky AP items like item 3116 item 3027 with tanky/damage AD items item 3812 item 3071

That's basically a revert ?

It's a rework.

(Rework (Revert))

Cmon people, a revert is literally a type of rework.

What are you talking about? There's no champion that exists in the game, that i know of, which works in this way or would play anything like this proposed rework.

Kaioko5 votes

It's the exact same abilities he had before the mage rework. You've literally copied everything word for word. I'm not sure if this is suppose to be funny; seems more like a waste of a thread that could provide good discussion to a problematic champion.

"Problematic."

I don't think so.

Really makes me think.

...also this thread isn't precluding another thread from discussing the problems of malzahar's existing design...

Is this not just old malzahar before the mage update?

deadlychuck3 votes

It solves a lot of the problems that the current malzahar has, which is what i was aiming to do when i typed out the proposed rework.

Real talk: Are you talking about the moderately competent version or the painfully broken version?

Thats the point lol

Now that the DFT got removed I think this new W should 20%/25%/30%/35%/40% max health magic damage and not that nerf- I mean, suggested amount don't you think? [slayer-jinx-wink]

deadlychuck3 votes

What's more relevant with the W's power is actually more the duration and tick rate.

Directly adjusting the damage probably would have a much more muted effect to buffing it.

So i'd rather keep the numbers the same, but if you wanted to buff it, reduce the duration to say 4 seconds and tick rate appropriately.

This seemed like a really solid atypical mage design which would have a reasonable number of clear counters, but still not overbearing similar to AurelionSol

Hell, they've even got items like item 3140 item 3102 item 3814 (wouldn't trigger on his Null Zone) which could work great for stopping the possible E + ult damage.

I mean that's basically saying revert the rework which i don't exactly hate the idea of but it doesn't change his core balance issues. with his ultimate and E. E being a annoying sustain and harass tool, and his r making hell not seem so bad.

deadlychuck2 votes

Well there's also a few advantages even in those regards. Without voidlings on his W, he would have a harder time clearing without using more mana or taking a lot of time in the early game to lower the minions' health to be within range of his E's damage.

And with items like item 3140 item 3102 item 3814 you could really put a stop to his kill potential post lvl 6.

dreadedcape1 votes

Changing his mana consumption. i wasnt exactly looking at the numbers but seeing as to how high they are Id still have to say that you don't always need to shove and it doesn't effect his roams besides the fact that his ult could be canceled a tank support would be a mandatory counter pick still leaving him pretty damn annoying id recommend a change to the e like a zoid fog or something so people of the option of moving from it just spit balling. but hed still struggle not being annoying one way or another which is fine but there needs to be a better way to play around it besides dont fight him

deadlychuck1 votes

Oh something like Viktor ult on his E. That's actually not a bad idea. It should probably remain single target though, and it would make sense to still allow it to teleport to the next target on kill, but if that target is moving, then they might be able to avoid it.

E wouldn't start getting mana back for the cast until level 5 assuming it bounced 5 times

R as flat damage only means it can be mitigated by MR items and since he wouldn't have a shield, he'll easily be CC'd if he isn't careful.

The high damage base and ratios made it so that yes he could hurt an opponent if he harassed. However due to the high mana costs and high CD that came along with them, Malzahar would have to spend the next 2-3 waves trying to get his E to bounce for more mana. In other words, he wasn't one of those mid laners that could constantly spam abilities in your face. You'd get more time to breathe is what I mean.

Old Malzahar would have to slowly poke you down.

Making sure you didn't see your health bar go down too quickly so you didn't get scared and go back to base.

Just a little voidling attacking the last melee minion

A pool that just happened to be under you as Malzahar was getting minions lower for E bounce

Maybe a Q that hits the back line and got you by accident

Little things that added up for that all-in

Cause lets face it, there is no one who has played league for awhile who hasn't attempted to stay in lane with 40-60% health. Especially if it took 2-3 waves before you reached that point. Whats the harm in staying a little longer?

I guess the bottom line is:

Power and high ratios gave old Malzahar his good win-rate (52-54%)

But his misunderstood/unappreciated meticulous playstyle gave him his low play-rate (2-4%)

Or I guess that play-rate consisted of the people that did appreciate his playstyle
