What's the context behind the changes to QSS to not remove Zed ult?

It was because having a zed in the game forced people to buy an item purely for that one champ. This meant that Zed had to be balanced around OTHER people buying a specific item. So they removed that interaction so that Zed could be balanced around his own kit/items rather than an item others were forced to buy.

Well it hasn't turned out too successful so far from my knowledge. Do they plans to rework him in the assassin update?

Most likely considering he is League's most iconic assassin. I doubt it will be a full rework but more on the scale of the Vlad rework.

now people are basically just forced to buy zhonya's instead

Pretty much this comment, also ADC's don't have any options against him. Even Sterak's doesn't stop the burst he does with his current build. So they're forced to rely on team mates in a fight to protect you, and let's be honest, that's not gonna happen.

while not great for damage, GA or zhonya's are viable options for adcs. better to live and deal less damage than get instantly killed and do no damage.

I didn't get to finish my GA. Even then it just makes me a sitting duck for when I come back to life with 30% health, unless my team wins the fight while I'm sitting in my GA.

they didn't want a 1300 gold item to be a hard counter to a champion.

Well, can't they just make it so Merc Scimitar blocks his ult but QSS doesn't?
