"barriers to diversity"

taken from ghostcrawlers recent dev blog.

For starters, we do have a lot of champions. It requires a lot of bandwidth to focus on all of them, all the time.

no shit. maybe thats a sign to entirely stop with champion releases. i know many people will disagree with me on that, but its something that ive been wondering for a long time. people are always thirsty for the next new champion to keep the game fresh, but at some point it becomes damaging to the existing champion pool.

does the champion pool simply grow too large to keep under control, and allow riot to give every champion the attention he deserves? imo the answer is yes.

even though the pace has slowed down significantly from a champion release every 2 weeks in season 2, to about 6 champions per year now, more and more champions get released.

this often causes even minor global gameplay changes to runes, masteries, itemization, summoner spells, the jungle layout etc. to have horrible unforseeable side effects. at some point the champion pool just becomes too large to consider the effect every patch has on every single champion in the game.

sure, you can go ahead and try to nerf the biggest offenders who are currently hogging the top spots of the competitive food chain, but it already leads to weak and unproblematic champions rotting in the dirt for month and years at the time, until they stop being pushed back on the balancing shedule, since there is always some larger, gamebreaking issue to work on.

Not only this, but a lot of released champions are pointless and bring nothing in this game

Mira Arya Enthe5 votes

They bring money to the game.

Sona x Rubick1 votes

how are you going to bring money with Kled AurelionSol =?

Who wouldn't want to play as a old drunken nedreck and a sassy dragon? I know I would.

Jaygo414 votes

Aurelion Sol is entirely unique. We didn't need another diving fighter Camille

What does camille even bring to the table besides more rage and frustration?

This

It becomes very hard to create new champions that doesnøt overlap current champions playstyles.

Why would anyone ever play Vel'Koz when you can play Viktor and do what he does; just better and safer?

Why stand still and channel the ultimate when you can run around and cast all of your other spells in the meantime.

You're totally right, but Riot lost the control of this a loooooong time ago

Or at least slow down the rate of Champ releases from 6 per year to 3 or 2 per year. Meanwhile you take the extra resources & put them into the ChampUP team to increase to rate of VGUs. I mean, we're honestly at a good point to start slowing champs releases if Riot wishes to still add more to the game.

I thought that by Season 5, the champion pool was large enough. When there are so many champions, each one becomes less unique. I would much rather have reworks of obsolete champions, rather than pumping out new fancy champions. Quality over quantity.

For example, Camille's kit could have been implemented on someone like Xin Zhao.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Yes. Just waiting for them to release a female human void champion or female mage I like, then they can stop.

Ralanr1 votes

I just want another solo lane tank. Even better if it has a Templar great helm and a flail.

Would be epic.

Mira Arya Enthe3 votes

They will be too busy releasing another 500 bland looking monsters or try-hard 'unique' designs to release anymore humans holding a weapon with magical powers.

Ralanr1 votes

Which of the past ones were bland?

Danjeng1 votes

Why does it have to be a FEMALE void champion. What difference will that make from someone like Kassadin or Malzahar? Reminds me of someone asking for an old lady champion.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Because we have 2 male void humans... I want a female? I find them attractive and relatable? It's no different than asking for another dragon champion or another armored champion...

Danjeng1 votes

Whether the champion be a male or female, shouldn't matter. Not trying to attack your hopes, but a Rioter commented on that old lady champion post that they try to make unique champions, rather than basing them off a single idea, like their gender.

There's a difference between a dragon champion, and a cosmic star-forging dragon with sass.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

Cannot tell if you are sjw or mtow. But the gender does matter, visually, lorewise, in terms of voice, dialogue and skins. In addition to relatability and enjoyment for individuals who prefer a specific design.

I'm no SJW, I'm just pointing out your suggestion is very general. I would say the same thing if you said "I would like a ghost champion" or "I would like a red champion". Seems silly you're out just for that single trait without any other ideas in mind.

Mira Arya Enthe1 votes

I have posted 5000 character champion suggestion pages in the past. I suggested a total of 9 champions since 2011. Riot tends to want to just know what the community wants on a general basis. They aren't adding your precisely described champions as you state them anyway.

Here's something:

Kaerimn, Daughter of the Void

As a young child, Kaerimn was a very sickly, due to a terrible plague. Special doctors offered cures (see Black Scourge Singed), but despite their treatments, her condition would only worsen over time. She would be unable to see her own parents, as they feared also catching the horrific disease. Her parents cared for her greatly, and would read to her bedtime stories through the locked door, but she was still lonely. So she spent years locked away in a dirty hovel, with nobody to play with.

The shack she lived in was once the family library, a grand one, as she used to live in a magnificent mansion. However, as her parents desperately tried to find a cure, their funds drained away, and the household fell to disrepair. Friendless, Kaerimn spent her time burrying herself in books, learning to read from the stories her mother and father would tell her through the door. She would follow along the words using her own copy, and felt a connection to them, through books.

As she read more and more, she felt an increasing desire to go outside to see the things she read. She read about the refreshing scent of standing in a quiet meadow at dusk, as fireflies danced with the movements of the grass. She read about mighty mountains that towered over Runeterra, taller than any building in Piltover. She read about the adventures of a monkey, born from stone, who journeyed to the north defeating any who came in his way. She read about the Rune Wars, the recent development of advanced techmaturgy, and magic beings that dwelled around the land.

There was a small crevice in her confined room. She would press her nose and mouth up to it, trying to get a taste of the real world. She would always either be reading, or trying to see out of the crack. Now a young woman, she had a burning ambition to one day traverse the world she had read about. But she was now frail and could hardly stand without shaking uncontrollably. Her death was near. One early morning, before the sun rose, she saw a purple light coming from the slit in the wall. This was different from anything she had seen before. A low humming resonated through the wall, and she was transfixed.

Using an old Rune Book , she channeled its power (AD Rune Page), to break down the locked door, despite her parent's warning not to. She made way to the purple light, on the other side of the library-hut. As she walked, it was painful, but she revelled as she could now smell the outside air around her, and feel the grass gently caressing her feet. Finally, she gazed at the source of the purple light, and proceeded to go even closer to it. She recognized it, from the books she read. It was a Void Gate.

A cold shivered through her spine, and she collapsed onto the floor. The walking had exhausted her, and her last bits of health slipped away. As she struggled to keep awake, a creature slithered out from the portal. It was then as it hovered over Kaerimn's limp body, that it spoke. The Voidling saw the will to live in her eyes, so it struck a deal. It would grant her Void magic, which would prolong her life, and grant her incredible powers. She would be able to traverse the world. But there was a cost. When she had seen enough, the creature would absorb all the information of what she had experienced. Kaerimn agreed, and began her own path to the Institute of War (Is this canon anymore?) in hopes of paying back her parents for all that she had put them through. But with each pace she takes, she is one step closer to her inevitable end.

Also, what is mtow?

I don't think new releases need to completely stop, since all of this year's releases besides Camille have been completely unique additions with unique playstyles. I do think they need to speed up the pace at which they update old champions, though.

the way i see it riot are in a lose lose situation here. either they stop making new champions/items/masteries and focus on balance thus getting the game slowly stale. or the keep it unbalanced but fresh by keeping new content non stop like they are doing now. on a business standpoint the later makes more sense, most of leagues players base wont be satisfied with only new skin releases and endless patch cycles for a ''maybe'' the game will end up balanced, and that balanced game will 100% have a fixed meta that never ever change. so as people leave the game slowly dies. the only way to keep players interested is to release new stuff.

which is why I heard Riot is considering alternatives like making specific champions unplayable throughout the season. i heard someone talking about it. so they will make champions like karma, shen, morde, zilean, teemo and another long list . . . unplayable for the entire season and the next they might be played.

difficult to believe. people will just leave the game if that were to happen.

I think one champion every 3~4 months would be fine for a long time

Unless you have some genius idea to increase pick diversity, which you don't, I don't see the problem with them spicing up the game with new champions. It allows them and us to experiment with new approaches to playing the game.

the "genius" idea would be to stop releasing more champions, so league doesnt become this untamable beast of 200 champions of which they only have the capacity to work on 40 per year.

and increasing champion diversity is actually something theyre already trying by emphasizing each champions strategic nieche. theyre trying to give every champion somethign to do that only really that one champion does.

thats the entire reason theyre making class updates.

this is going to be more difficult, the more champions exist.
