The reason most people are stuck in silver/gold

General Esdeath ··27 votes·13,771 views

In my adventures through silver and gold, I've noticed the BIGGEST cause of loss is people who don't know how to play the map. You'll get someone who contributes no pressure, doesn't rotate, doesn't roam, doesn't collapse, and doesn't know how to team fight. Just had a Malphite who went full AP and only ulted the enemy support Xerath. Guess why he thinks we lost? Not him! He did the most damage!

Oh but he never used his CC on the rest of the enemy team or the carrying YI.

This isn't Call of Duty, guys. Kills are nice but if you don't do anything with them or focus objectives, you're going to lose.

I mean objectively you contributed the least to the game. Your kill participation was 44% (worst on the team) and you contributed to the least amount of kills/assists, you had the worst KDA and you took one tower. You can talk all you want about "objectives" but you're not helping getting them by taking one tower and being the least impactful person in team fights.

Someone who knows how to play the map doesn't wind up with the worst KDA in the game and not able to get any towers. Sorry to steal your thunder here but I believe this one's on you just as much as anyone else, chief.

  1. He is a top laner, yes he can roam 10 minutes after game starts but that doesn't change the fact he is playing top lane, the role that is the most isolated in the game.

  2. Not everything someone does results in a kill/assist, the game has no way to tell if you chunked someone out right before an objective which helped your team secure it.

You can talk all you want about "objectives" but you're not helping getting them by taking one tower

Forcing the enemy team to respond to him taking their base is helping the team. The more people they send to deal with split pushers, the less enemies friendly players has to deal with contesting them. Of course people still need to learn when it's better to be grouped with the team or split pushing tho.

Kills/Assists isn't everything.

I never said I played perfect, but I sure as hell applied pressure to draw their mid and jungle to my lane and pinged when they were there so I could sit under my tower while my jungler took dragon or ganked bot.

You're looking at KDA again, and implying that without TP I can have that high of a KP.

The fact is you obviously didn't do enough. You may think you did but KDA is usually a good indicator of what was going on in the match. Overextending and dying while doing some damage to a turret isn't really helping the team (Except in rare scenarios where this strat works, Inting Sion, etc). Which brings up the point of you running Ignite instead of TP. If that's the case then you need to be rolling your lane, especially with a lane bully like Renekton. And you should be far more impactful and getting involved in teamfights. I'm sure you notice you win far more of your games when you have a positive KDA.

Map pressure is great but you have to be smart about what you're doing. I see so many people in Silver games just split the whole time or try to force an objective and not realize that the other team can dive and win a fight. Taking objectives wins games but killing the other team allows you to take objectives.

KDA does have an impact, but it only goes so far. When you get to late game and one specific champ on the enemy team is carrying hard, you need to strategize for it. Don't be ulting a support, don't try to steal a blue buff and then die for it, just stay with the team and use your ults together. Even if I win my lane, the other guy just has to play safe and I'll only get a cs lead, but that also leaves me open to ganks.

You need to know WHO to kill, and what to do once you kill them.

I would agree but this season it's a bit different. This season the reason why most people stuck in gold is because this trash matchmaking and the reason that there are more Smurfs than usual. If you look on teams in Gold there are often players from Silver, Gold all the way up to Plat 1 in one match with winrates between 30% and 90%. It's almost impossible to influence those games (except you play an 1v9 Hypercarry). So it's literally coinflip.

On the other hand, in my D3 games there are even matches in 9 out of 10 games and winrates are between 50% and 56% most of the time.

I can carry those games with Voli but I can't carry that coinflip gold games with my Smurf :D

Ambient Snow3 votes

Yea that's one reason, But not "THE REASON"

SIlver and bronze are hard places to get out of because the skill Gap is so huge in this area of the ranked system that riot had to create iron and still the pool of skill is stupefying

In Silver you got the follow.

Trolls, Smurfs Smurf Trolls New players Ragers, Unskilled Those who want to climb Account boosters Twitch Streamers ( watch me climb from bronze to Plat)

I could go on and on about why people don't climb but honestly to type up that much of a report only to have it down voted to oblivion isn't worth the effort

Yes, I agree, but having one or two poeple knowing it usre as hell aint gonna get anyone out of gold none the less silver. There are amazing players in those elos that are being dragged down since there is no such thing as 1v9 anymore. U are right, but there is no point to posting this.

There are amazing players in silver - gold . No . It ends here . Unless they have played less than 40 games , so they are given the benefit of the doubt . Plats are not great either . Diamonds not amazing either . Before you scan me , i am or was plat 1 , i do not play a lot so i do not remember , have been in diamond for 1-2 years too , peaking at d1 i think . You want to use the term " amazing " ? Use it for masters to challengers . You want the term "decent but maybe unlucky" ? Use it for the ( high silver) - gold with less than 40 games .

No, there aren't. There is not a single amazing player stuck in silver that can't get out. There are some players that may be able to get up to the next level if they improve, but they are not amazing. They are above average, at best.

Actually most people are bronze to gold because that is how the ranked system works. Top 15% plat plus bottom 5% iron 80% in the other 3 divisions. Even if you are a good player you probably aren't in the top 15%. Therefore you are bronze silver or gold

I think it has more to do with people not wanting to play hundreds of serious games with intense concentration to both improve and rank up.

League of Legends is only a game. When people take it that seriously it becomes a job, but if you don’t take it seriously ranking up higher will be hard— both because you need to play faster than the yearly resets and because you need to play a lot seriously to git gud.

TL;DR: people have lives, and gitting gud and ranking up in League takes no lifing.

You don't have to take it serious or not have a life, I used to play 1 game a day but I won them so I climbed last season. Only have to dedicate time if you want to be diamond.

I stopped being able to dedicate 1 game a day a while ago. But even if I was able to do so, I would want to play and have fun right?

Assuming you get 20 lp a win, it takes 37 straight wins to rise one tier. For, say, a silver IV, getting plat would in theory take a minimum of 74 games if they had a 100% winrate. If you go with a more reasonable 55% winrate it will take 370 games, so 1 year of roughly 1 game a day. A slightly generous 60% winrate would take about half a year. Idk how often they reset the ranks nowadays (I heard they changed something but I quit playing after URF so no idea what).

But that’s just assuming you’re rising from silver 4 to plat 4. If it were iron 4 to plat 4, it would need to be 1 year of a game a day at 60% winrate or 1 year of 2 games a day at 55% winrate. Of course this is a hypothetical, everyone knows that if you’re good you’ll rise quickly out of iron, bronze, and silver. The issue is statistical variance is a thing, dedication is hard to keep up, every time you play you need to put your 100%, and several other seemingly minor but actually major things. Added up it becomes a huge deterrent to ranking up.

I assure you such a large amount of the playerbase isn’t bad or without potential. The issue is simply (especially in NA) lack of morale or incentive to climb. If Faker (just a random example) never practiced playing league at all, he wouldn’t have been a pro or even close. And that practice adds an extra wall for the newer players as well, but also the old players who have never bothered to try to get better.

TL;DR: even that “little” or “not serious” amount of gameplay you mention is enough to deter many. But ranking up with that little amount of gameplay is only possible if you have already surmounted the wall of “practice makes perfect,” already having most of the skill needed to climb.

Saezio2 votes

If you know how "to play the map" and many golds don't you will climb because there are 4 "gold nubs" in your team and 5 in the enemy team. You will climb if you consistently play better than the others in your games. The people you are matched WITH are the same people you are matched AGAINST.

In a way.

Skillwise, yes, all players in a match should be of similar level, but that is not always the case, the Riven in my last ranked game said Taliyah and Rammus are ADC, complained how we don't have tanks while telling me I don't know how to build Taliyah because I have mage items.

[sg-zephyr]

She had no basic knowledge of how to move around the map, help or itemize.

Another example can be the Vi I had the previous game, if you check her game history, although she has over 120k mastery on Vi, she builds the same 3 items every game: Trinity, Black Cleaver and Hexdrinker/Maw. In my game, she went Hexdrinker against a 4 AD team with the support only had magic, the Lulu. She refused to gank, close to 15 mins in Lee had 12+ KP, Vi was still at 0. I was hard camped mid and my wards were of no help, Lee came from all the wildest positions you can imagine a Lee to come from, so if Vi didn't want to help me, I asked her to help the other lanes, she didn't want to.

This happened the other way around a lot, I've met a Nidalee who was good mechanically but failed hard on every other check box and since I was her enemy jungler, it was easy to shut her down, she started an invade at my red, so I conceded (4v3, not worth it), I stole all her red side jungle, my blue side and the 2 camps she left on red side, so she felt pressure to gank, and every time she got killed she felt even more forced to make stuff happen, she didn't knew what to actually do around the map.

TL:DR - Although the system sees the players in one match as equal skill, especially in lower elos, the skill disparity between players in that match can be super high. I've made a Tryndamere go 5 cs at 20 mins on top lane, I've seen 1.2 mil mastery Tryndamere feed hard (and checking match history after seeing that guy for the 3rd time in my games feeding on both sides, he wasn't talented at all).

While it's true that if you're good you will climb, the climb speed in lower elos is much slower than in higher elos assuming the player who wants to climb is of equal or similar skill as the rank he wants to climb from.

Saezio1 votes

If someone is of equal or similar skill as the rank he/she wants to climb from , they shouldn't be able to climb. they are in the correct rank if they are playing with people of similar skill level on average.

If you can consistently win your lane (let's not say 9/10 times, let's say win lane hard 7/10 times) and are much more useful to their team than their lane opponent 7/10 times then they will definitely climb. They maybe won't have a 70% winratio cause you can't hard carry them all, but making the game essentially 4v5 does grant you a win chance way higher than 50%

IP Masquerena2 votes

That's not quite what I ment.

Take the Riven and Nidalee I talked about. Both teams couldn't do jack with them because the game was much harder from the get go. Riven lost her lane, she knew how to combo, but that's all she knew, she didn't knew to trade, when not to trade, etc, that's basic knowledge. I won my lane versus Lux, I helped Rammus versus Jax but we still lose. Kog'Maw was a troll as he was the support but picked another ADC, Riven had no idea what's happening around her and only cared to KS. How can you win a game when you're 2 people down from the start? You can't.

What about the Nidalee? How could her team win when she set them so behind while I put up the pressure? They couldn't.

There's always the "but if you're good, you're 1 player, so the enemy team has more chances to get the feeder than you", but in lower elos, due to the skill disparity between players, that's actually pointless. You can win your lane supper hard and still lose the game a decent amount because many time players just don't know how to use your impact, or you're the only one winning the lane. That's what I ment by "slower climb". A Diamond player trying to climb out of Diamond will have an easier time than a Silver player trying to climb out of Silver because of that skill disparity. If the Diamond player makes stuff happen, his team will capitalize on it, but the Silver's team may not. I tried to solo Baron as Vayne, I could do it, so I asked my team to keep the enemy busy on mid lane. I was behind and always focused, so I wouldn't be of my help to them, but what my team did lost us the match, more precisely, the Kass and Zed. Zed backed off and said he doesn't want to fight it there (although all they needed to do was stall a few more seconds) and Kassadin went in 1v5, he was fed, thought he's rambo, and we lost, their jungler and top laner came to start Baron early, I was there, they killed me and took it. What could've I done better? Play my lane better, that's all, as I couldn't farm or get kills, our trio of assassins tried to take everything, heck, although Kass had 6 slots + elixir, he still didn't stop farming and even take the creeps or jungle camps I was trying to farm.

Lower ranks are too full of everything and every type of players that even players who legitely want to climb have a hard time. Unless you hypercarry 1v9, it's hard to win due to how much more team required the game became and players refusing to cooperate can hinder the process. In lower elos it's not "who gets the bad player", it's who gets the "worst player". I'm more scared of a Yasuo on my team than a Yasuo on the enemy team. A majority of players tilt so very easy in low elos, so it's not a question of "who will tilt" but "who will tilt first" which makes the difficulty to climb much harder than it should be.

Ambient Snow1 votes

See the problem with your thinking is " Similar skill as the rank"

The reason its so hard to climb is because there are a lot of players in ranks that don't match their skills or abilities.

Saezio1 votes

How is that the problem?

If I am in gold 3 but on average, I play like a plat 2 player (not stats, having plat stats on a gold game doesn't mean I am plat skill, having plat stats in a plat game means plat skill) how many games does it take for me to get out of gold? If there is a chance that there are silver players in my team there is a bigger chance they will be on the enemy team .

Now, there is an exception to this, if I am of higher skill level than my allies 9/10 times, I should know better than to play supportive/team oriented champions. To climb I should know I have to play the champions that the carry player I am should play. And when I reach a place where I am about the average player in the game (not the best not the worst) then I can start relying on my team.

Ambient Snow1 votes

Because that logic is completely flawed.

how your logic works is simply applying that every player is at a base set of skills and you playing at a higher lvl raises the chances that you will win which isn't true.. Take my last game for instance when I was blitz.

I played like a gold player in a silver match.. so using your logic I should have had a higher chance of winning cause I knew what to play to counter the enemy team ..

well how does my game turn out? I got a 2nd time draven who fed. and took wrong runes, I got a top lane that afked and left cause he went 0-3 top vs renekton

I had a mid veiger who lost his lane to a kayle

after game I come to find out.. I was some how set up with 2 silvers.. a bronze 1 and a bronze 3.. Enemy team had 5 straight silvers.

what you seem to forget is that Duo queue is not a solid. solo queing experience.. It's a broken system because riot allows duo queue which artificially boosts players and throws them into a higher ranking then they should which right has admitted this slight artificial boost to balance duo queueing..

also

Saezio1 votes

Well, I agree duo queue shouldn't be in soloq i give you that.

But you have to remember that you can't examine small amounts of games, over a whole season's worth of games, you will end up at the rank that represents your skill.

Also, you have to keep in mind what I said earlier, you can't play support to climb, and especially tank supports. If you (for some reason I can't understand) want to play supports to climb, you need self sufficient supports like velkoz, zyra, xerath, pyke. That is provided you belong at a higher elo hence you having more agency is a good thing for your win chance

And even better, don't play support at all until you reach the rank that you think represents you. It's the role with the least agency in the game. Just play mid or Adc to climb.

I mean sure it might not be as fun for you, but if you feel like you belong higher, you should play to WIN. That means playing to carry and trying to have the most influence in the match's outcome

AnotherFeeder1 votes

League 101. If u truely believe u are a better player than ur elo, then y play a carry. U cannot go blitzcrank, claim to play like a gold and still lose, and pretend that means anything because it does not. Watch bunny fufus bronze thresh videos. U do not play utility champs in an elo that u cannot rely on followup. Only exception would be if u have a carry duo u know is compitent. Otherwise yes, u are just flipping a coin.

Ambient Snow1 votes

And that thinking is what causes the climb in ranked to be so bloody stupid.. "Watch Bunny Fufu's video"

Seriously this is the stuff that causes most the losses in bronze is some one watching a video that some pro or streamer in high ranks posted.. and now through the power of vision They are now Plat players"

yea I was blitz ok landing grabs and following up, me picking blitz has nothing to do with the fact multiple other lanes failed that game.. which no one seems to understand the issue with this thinking,

" I know i'm not Diamond or plat and, I understand I can't carry every team. So I have to improve I have to get better which I get. But that is hard to do and frustrating when I get teams like that one that just fed their lanes"

  1. I don't play a carry and go support because simply put.. Support is one of the most autofilled rolls aside from jungler and I would rather support myself then deal with some one who got autofilled and goes "lux support" and starts off trying to build item 3285 as their first item and never builds a support item claiming.. a support item is for ADC's not support.

  2. Another issue is, simply from your comment those who watch a video of some one playing a carry " that's what half these first time urgots, and Ezreals are. They are people who watch some LCS or Plat streamer Steam roll with one of these champions and because now they saw this video and know the runes they magically know how to play and carry with these champions they have never played..

AnotherFeeder1 votes

Oookay, u kind of hard missed the point. Bunyfufu didnt win any of the bronze games he recorded. The point was u dont play those kinds of champs in low elo which.... i thought i stated pretty clearly. If ur playing playmaker team based champs in low elo, ur at the mercy of how good ur teammates are. Where as if u play a champ that can carry, and ur actually good, ull win most games.

spending 3 years in bronze/silver i can say the problem is they dont know the most basic things.

reading and math.

this might sound stupid but its actually true.

few weeks ago i had a mf on my team with mastery lv 6, so clearly some games played and all of a sudden she goes like "i just realized my q crits if it kills a minion"

had a galio go mid vs a corki. he went spirit vissage first instead of adaptive helmet. when i asked him why he said the healing is better and he never picks helmet. completely ignoring that corkis AUTOATTACKS and every ability deal magic damage which gets reduced by helmets passive. yes even his autoattacks

what i mean by math: oh the enemy is level 7 and im level 5, he also has 3 kills i have 3 deaths? lets 1v1 him. this is a horrible situation. 2 enemys but im all alone and im not fed? maybe shouldnt engage.

minimap not being used at all. people either not using their trinket, or using it but completely ignoring the vision they get from it. its season 9 and the "report lane xy for no ss" excuse is still something i see a lot. also advice: if you rely on ss, go into the settings and use the "mirror minimap" option, this way your minimap gets put into the bottom left corner. so now if you wanna read chat, you actually read the map.

THE WORST mistake i see is not knowing the matchup/powerspikes. the best example that happens literally all the time in low elo is insert ANY champion vs renekton top. renekton being one of the strongest early game champs, people still try to fight him at lv 2 or 3. and keep doing so even tho rene alrdy killed them 4+ times. and to make things worse, they play for example kayle. a champ that has a very shitty early game.

and another thing is minion management. people recall in totally random times, sometimes being nowhere close to death and yet they recall with the enemys big wave crushing into their tower. if, at the end of the game, you are 3-4 levels behind EVERYONE then damn.

WeaselRune1 votes

You say people dont know reading and math, then I see all these lower case letters starting sentences... (cringe). I mean, I see the EUW, maybe this was translated from another language, but English seems too good... Pot, kettle, careful about the shade youre throwing, some could get on you.

Minimac20002 votes

Actually, technically the reason that most people are stuck in silver or gold is because that is how percentage based ranks in a zero sum elo system works. The majority of people will always be in silver or gold because that is where the most people (and also the average elo of people) lies. So just saying "get better" actually won't do anything and most people not in iron do in fact make gameplay improvements over time. The thing is everyone gets better and you only climb out if you happen to get better faster than ~75% of the population (or you devote a lot of hours and get out with a 40% wr and 1200 games lol)

So the actual reason people are stuck in silver is that there are a lot of people in silver that do what you said and because how the game is designed and matchmaking conceived they are dragged down in a sort of fk up cycle?

I play the map very well and have never been beyond Silver. I know from experience, it mostly has to do with matchmaking as there are plenty of people in Plat with average mechanics and little to no macro knowledge.

You need the rest of your team to play the map too, that's the thing. Back when I used to watch pros spectate bronze I noticed the person who played the map would lose because the rest of their team would force team fights and force a 4v5
