Orianna player here.
I have a deep connection with the champion as she is the champion that made me so deeply rooted in my study of the game. I originally expressed great issues lanign against her back when i was a Level 20ish scrub and so i did something i didn't think i would do , and that was study the champion.
I learned everything about her from her Cooldowns to her ball radius but it wasn't enough for me. I went even further and started playing the champion first hand just to know in my bones the limits of the champion.
It had the affect of making me not only have no issues laning against her with with virtually any midlaner, but grow to love playing her as well, and she is now my most proficient midlane mage as a result.
The 2 main keys to laning against Orianna are very simple. Orianna can't Q to a place that isn't within her actual Q range. This means she has to move in an erratic or unfavorable position to move it to you unless you are already in her Zone.
The second is that all of her spells are delayed by the travel time of her ball.
Your time with Orianna will depend highly on how much you can force Orianna's ball around compared to her.
The better you position for her Q, the easier it is to dodge and the more you force her into bad positions.
getting to close or too far within her zone can also force her to reset the ball by either getting out of leash range or forcing her to use E, which burns a lot of her mana.
Its' also worth mentioning that she lacks any Hard CC outside of her ultimate, moderate to low AoE and mostly DPS oriented in terms of damage output and thus very susceptible to mana issues unless she builds
which she doesn't since it delays her powerspike too much to early and she wants the CDR from
/
ASAP anyway, and has lower base resistances to make up for her Ball stats, which means for the majority of any given game, she will be squishier than most every mage in the game since she won't be holding the ball for most of her game time, and she maxes E last which means even when she is, she isn't getting the max resistances of the Ball.
All of these things together are what make champs who outrange and can poke her the most effective, but playing champs that don't is hardly an unfeasible nightmare.
Orianna has and still is imo the epitome of a balanced champion.
She has her strengths and weaknesses and they are really pronounced, but moreso than that, beating her in laning is more about how you as a player interact with her as opposed to whether or not your champ is a counter or in/out of meta.
She is skill reliant, but not in the way where if the player is good, they basically are unstoppable and indisputably better than every champ in the same role at pretty much all points of the game like
or
were.
