why does his shield take so long to activate, or doesn't detonate when the shield breaks? 4 seconds is kind of a dumb duration to blow up

3 seconds, and it was done to prevent Sion from being the gigantic lane bully he was back in the day. Getting off 10% max health damage off of that explosion was much too easy

Actually, it was because it let Sion clear the jungle extremely well on top off being safe. Sion's shout was changed to stop the lane bullying. There was a period where Sion completely dominated the jungle and nobody could contest the jungle against him because he could complete his first clear so safely and efficiently he'd outlevel and outfarm the other junglers.

If it blew up when the enemy broke it then it would force people to not focus him. Which is counterproductive on a tank.

It also doesn't explode to force you to decide if you want the survivability or the extra DPS.
