Kill gold really needs to be reworked to account for how hard the game snowballs right now

Yenn··4 votes·1,542 views

This season has made snowballing 10x worse than the previous season, due to all the gold that has been added to the game, via bounties and turret plating. Both of these mechanics primarily benefit the team that is already winning and rarely actually facilitate comebacks, unless the game is already close.

Close games virtually never happen. 80% of my games have a clear winner by 15 minutes, with some champion having a 10+ kill lead, and usually also another 800 gold from turret plating. Even if they manage to die with a 1000 gold bounty, they still have such an insane lead over everyone else that the extra gold for the losing team doesn't really matter.

Ranked games should not be coinflips on which team has the biggest feeder. Even if one lane is counter-picked or just playing badly, the rest of the lanes should have a chance to influence the game, and not just be overpowered by a ridiculously fed champion whose numbers are too big to outplay.

Reducing kill gold to prevent the fed champion from getting so far ahead that they just win the game via brute force would help fix this. Another possibility would be to change how kill gold is calculated and split amongst participants, so who gets the killing blow is less important.

What the actually fuck is this garbage I just read? Counter snowball is so much stronger than it used to be. Bounties make up for more than 50% of the gold you are behind from the kills given which is an insane return rate. If I have 5 kills on you let's say without any diminishing returns which they would have at that point, but I will make it seem less terrible than it is, you would get 1500 gold for 5 kills, but be worth 800 gold. That is more than 50% of the gold you were behind. For 1 kill you get more than 2.5 kills worth of gold. That is so strong.

If you can catch it soon enough, yes, counter snowballing is possible, I agree; he's talking about late game recovery and counterattacking, which is virtually impossible this meta since most failing lanes tend to be 2-3 levels behind their opposing equivalent if not overall.

Yeah, but the problem is that snowball is TOO prevalent in games and the actual means of recovery is minimal at best. People are generally going to get sick either getting stomped or not getting carried by snowballers. This has been highlighted and dealt with years ago, for good reason.

The problem is the player not the game. It has been for a long time now. I will give you two reasons why.

  1. Player mentality is at an all time low and when a player sees one tiny thing go wrong they instantly give up. Some games are a grind and super hard and tedious to win especially with early game deficits, but most games are not decided in the first 10, 20, 25 minutes. If you think it is over than it is because you gave up not because it was not possible to recover.

  2. Players not understanding that if they are behind they should sit back farm safe and just let themselves get carried. So many games I have lost because someone can't just farm safely after losing early trades. Honestly 50% of my loses are because of this.

So you are saying that people are idiots and too prone to give up, even when at 15 minutes, the enemy has 15 kills on assassins and skirmishers and your team has 0? It's not that easy to make a recovery, and often too much of an effort and too risky. I should know because I was through the LAST snowball meta; it was garbage and definitely demoralizing.

And what can they do? I bet if they DON'T do something, their opponent would roam and kill another lane instead. They would just get a bigger item lead even if they don't roam. And its not like Riot has done anything to prevent early jungle ganks (if anything, they encouraged it too much), which is another side of the problem. And FYI, how many laners have you seen being the "non-carry" types? I have seen Yas, Rivens, Garens, Darius, Brands, Zyras, Zeds, Illaois, Fioras, Jaxs, Akalis, Sylas, Vaynes, Dravens...Point is, this is a meta where EVERYONE wants to carry, and if they have to take risks to do it, Riot has done zilch to dissuade them from doing so, just as they have denied opportunities of recovery.

If it is 15 to 0 it is too late. You already had a significant amount of time to get back into the game and you didnt. If you are behind 15 kills early you should lose.

That is a playerbase decision. Everyone wants to carry so everyone picks Carrie's. Tanks are viable even though people don't think they are. They are just harder to carry with and Riot has drilled it into our brains that every game I just carry which is not true. Also Riot has created drastically more comeback opportunities than there used to be. I could only imagine how much you would have complained back in season 4 when shutdowns were worth way less and pink wards were invisible so the team with the lead could easily choke out vision for enemy team.

Does that mean the rest of the team should also lose? I think not. And its not like Tanks have a strong early game compared to bruisers, or can press the advantage like slayers. And with Conqueror still around, even if nerfed, its no guarantee that they can remain a viable defense against snowballing. And just because there are bigger bounties doesn't mean comeback is any easier, especially when the snowballer in question is 3-4 levels ahead of the rest of the team and can kill 3-4 people on his own. Turrets and Herald are also incredibly flimsy than what they used to be, so any advantage could have you pushed to home before you have a chance to retaliate; Riot may have remedied initial snowball issues, but now they're making new ones.

Frosted Tips3 votes

Yes it does if they are not actively pushing the rest of the map while the fed player is not there. Also no one is getting 15 kills in just laning phase, so if they do get the 15 kills in laning phase report your inting teammate and move on and if they have 15 kills mid game then you guys should have been grouping up and forcing them to rotate or been grouping up to punish them when they over extend.

Well, it's not like most snowballers are not hard to escape from, like Riven Yasuo Zed Renekton Jax Hecarim...Oh wait, splitpushing too far could be just as detrimental against a roaming snowballer as facing one directly...

yeah and instead what they want is FREE pass to the late game. How about people actually learn to adapt? how about people actually learn to not feed uncontrollably? how about people learn that always fighting isn't the answer? how about people realize that going behind a couple of CS is better than giving away 5 kills to the enemy? how about people realize that just because one person in the enemy team is ahead that doesn't mean that they lost? how about people realize that you can make comebacks instead of giving up the instant the score is something like 7-0 10 mins in? how about people actually earn their late games instead of wanting it to be the norm? like I said before and like I said again, bounty gold isn't the issue. People being ahead is not the problem. There was a time where 10k gold leads literally meant nothing whatsoever since you could just stall the game endlessly with super ease. There was a point where you could reach 20k gold leads and still not be able to close games. Sorry but I rather not go back to those days where early game and gold leads meant nothing at all

Like I said, playing strategically and adapting to the situation is not the norm anymore. Everyone is just going balls to the wall 24/7 and feeding out of control once they're behind, because the pacing has pushed the game in this direction.

This makes it impossible to climb and turns every game into a coinflip, because the team with the biggest monkey loses and nobody else in the game gets any say in the outcome.

After all the BS from last season, I think people are tired of adapting, particularly to game no longer having any elements of fun. I think the game has become to slippery to regain control when it goes out of control. That recovery is impossible without these ludicrous risks that riot is shoving onto everyone. That snowball is too much and it would be luck if any team could holdout for so long after a disasterous early game. That defense and sandbag is pretty much USELESS because of weaker turrets and prevalent of excessive burst.

And I already noted that bounty gold wasn't the topic, it's SNOWBALL and the early KILL GOLD. And its not the sheer riches that ends the games, its how the riches are spent to just ruin chances of recovery (i.e. Assassins with item 3147 item 3142 item 3053 item 3161 etc).

I'm sorry, but I can't stand going back to the days when a bad early game would doom the rest of the 10-30 minutes of the game filled with despair and no chances.

If you don't catch the snowball early then you should lose to the snowball that is the whole point if trying to go for an early snowball.

That's usually not an option. The snowball hits critical mass when one side has completed their first item; at that point, they become unstoppable, because the completed item is a massive powerspike over someone who only has half of their item's components.

You can try to gank them, but unless you're equally fed, they're probably going to win or escape with summoners. The artificially prolonged laning phase makes it extremely hard to do anything before it's too late.

Yes, the problem is players who are behind playing like handicapped monkeys and feeding the shit out of the enemy team. This behavior has been promoted and rewarded by the recent change to make games faster paced, and the majority do not know how to play safely, and will never learn.

You can't fix the players, so the game needs to be fixed.

This is all about the player not realizing they have to play super safe until they also get their first item. Yes it is hard and yes you will lose CS, but it is better than soft inting.

You can try to gank them, but unless you're equally fed, they're probably going to win or escape with summoners. The artificially prolonged laning phase makes it extremely hard to do anything before it's too late.

So either the gank was misplayed or you are both extremely far behind. While 1 or 2 kills behind a 1v2 is super easy unless huge misplays on the duos behalf.

You can't fix the players, so the game needs to be fixed.

It is a player issue not a game issue. You can't just make kills useless without making the players that go for kills feel mistreated and feel as if the playstyle of mechanically outplaying your laner is under rewarded.

Spoiler: Just because you have kills doesn't mean you outplayed your opponent. In top lane, for example, counterpicks are significantly more important than skill.

There are also any number of things that can get you an advantage over your opponent that makes you auto-win the lane; for example, a fight in the river where your team got two kills and the enemy team got three kills. Your team technically lost, but you got both killing blows, and the enemy only got two assists. You're now able to stomp your lane opponent with the huge advantage the kills gave you, even though you technically lost the fight.

Assuming that having kills means you outplayed someone and should be rewarded by being able to one shot anyone who comes near you is completely wrong.

The player issue can't be fixed as long as overly aggressive play is rewarded as heavily as it is when you're ahead.

Overly aggressive play is actually in the worst place right now because bounties are so potent. The player issue needs to be fixed with an extremely hands on team dealt with the difficult hand to apply punishment for soft inting and giving up.

But you still got killed. That is a misplay by you which should be rewarded for the enemy.

A fight that went 2-3 should not be rewarded by giving one player on the side with two kills an overbearing advantage that lets them overpower their lane through sheer numbers. Both sides should be rewarded, but the reward being consolidated into one champion vs. spread across the champions involved pushes the one champion over the edge and starts the snowball. You're completely ignoring the reality of power spikes.

I'm not sure why you keep posting this. This is not something Riot is going to do, period, so other solutions are needed. The prior seasons' changes have intentionally pushed the game in this direction of hyper aggressive plays.

Riot is never going to start banning the players who either go 13-3 or 3-13, with no scores in between. Stop repeating yourself.

It is a player issue not a game issue. You can't just make kills useless without making the players that go for kills feel mistreated and feel as if the playstyle of mechanically outplaying your laner is under rewarded.

I strongly fuckin disagree with this. If you are the more skilled player, you should not have a problem outplaying your lesser skilled opponent multiple times without the severe handicap of you out-statting them with ridiculous gold leads.

Playing Fiora in the top lane, I've met a fair share of people who are better than me and I've faced a fair share I'm better than. There are times I go 4-0 in lane in a very short space of time. While the massive gold leads do help, most times I stomp lane this hard is actually because the enemy top is far less skilled at whatever champion he is playing that I am at Fiora. A good example are Rivens that spam Q in lane every chance they get. You will feed any half decent Fiora if you play Riven this way. Even if I gain half the gold, I'd still go 4-0. Fuck it, even if I got zero gold from the kills I'd still go 4-0. However, his team, which may have players far more skilled than me cannot actually do anything to me because I would just out-stat them and kill them at will. Then I'd go on to be 20-4. Why did I go 20-4? Is it because I'm that good? No. It's because their shit top lane gave me enough gold to render my skill or lack thereof completely irrelevant. This is not fair at all.

If kill gold is reduced, it's still a reward but reduced enough that it should provide the enemy team some breathing room to deal with you while still giving you firm control of your own lane. A level and CS advantage are more than enough to control a lane you won. If you are indeed more skilled then you should have no problem rolling over the enemy team anyway, even if that lead was reduced. Why should I be allowed to kill everyone on the enemy team without thinking because my lane opponent was a low skill feeder? Does that sound fair to you?

That is not what I meant. I meant that the more skilled player deserves to be rewarded for being better than the other player and already pretty small amount of gold and exp kills give should not be reduced.

Why should I be allowed to kill everyone on the enemy team without thinking because my lane opponent was a low skill feeder? Does that sound fair to you?

They become worth less gold everytime you kill them and if the enemy team is not trying to shut you down after the first 1, 2, 3 kills than they deserve to see slaughter them.

That gold in combination with the XP from the kill, and the XP and the gold from the minions I'm now free to farm uncontested is far too much already. The kill gold goes down but all that extra XP and CS doesn't.

and if the enemy team is not trying to shut you down after the first 1, 2, 3 kills than they deserve to see slaughter them.

What can say, bot lane really do if the enemy top gets two kills before anyone reaches level 6? They can't just leave their lane to go top and let bot lane free farm and get tower plates.

If they are fighting you consistently while behind without a jungler on the top side of the map to pressure you once the fail the fight with you then they are trolling. They deserve every bit of exp and gold disadvantage they are getting.

What can say, bot lane really do if the enemy top gets two kills before anyone reaches level 6? They can't just leave their lane to go top and let bot lane free farm and get tower plates.

Bot lane has to push there own advantages. Make plays bot or mid and push those lanes in. Force the Top laner to leave the lane or to lose other parts of the map. If you are not actively trying to pressure the rest of the map while their fed player is not near you then you are playing incorrectly.

One person on the winning team is insanely ahead and has a 1000g bounty. The losing team has two lanes who have high CS because they're passively farming, and they have bounties for it.

The person with the 1000g bounty has an insane advantage over the two farming champions and can easily collect the bounty on them, pushing them even further ahead.

Once you're ahead by a large enough amount, it becomes extremely hard to die unless you fuck up horribly, because you're one shotting the enemy with your number advantage. You have to make a huge mistake to lose it.

Sure, if you're playing in Bronze or Silver, maybe that happens. As long as you aren't playing like a monkey, there's enough free gold for the winning team to safely close out the game.

Also, you aren't considering that which champions gets the killing blow on someone with a bounty matters. It can easily go to the support and be wasted.

Jesus. I've been saying that kill gold needs to be reduced for 2 years now. You can probably find this in my post history where I mentioned this a number of times. Only now people are catching on?

To display the problem, last game I was bottom lane, and while we won the lane with me being up 2-0-1 as Jhin and the enemy Vayne being down over 50 CS, the enemy team's Zed was 12-2-3.

I'm basically being one shot because he has such an insane number advantage. Even collecting the 1000g bounty on him, he still instantly deletes me. There was no reward for playing well and winning lane, because some negligent monkeys have been AFK feeding for the past 15 minutes.

I just had a game where I was 6-1-5 as ADC. We dominated bottom lane.

Except our top lane was feeding horribly. The 10-2-1 Olaf literally just ulted with Ghostblade and ran me down, and I couldn't do anything about it. He just automatically won the game because our top was feeding so hard.

Zero fucking reward for playing well. The enemy team had much more gold concentrated into one champion, despite the game being 'even,' and automatically won by brute force. This is exactly why this bullshit needs to be changed.
