what if we turned boneplating into its own keystone?

since its introduction, it always felt kindof mandatory as a rune to pick up for the lane phase (if youre going into resolve). half of the reason is probably because its the only defensive rune in that row, and enables people to simply pick up 3 runes that help them deal with enemy champions, instead of two.

but i wonder if riot ever considered introducing a directional shield to the game.

imagine it similar to fioras vitals. you have 4 shields in the cardinal directions around your character model. if your champion gets auto attacked or otherwise damaged from a certain direction, it consumes the shield and absorbs part of the damage.

the 4 shields have a respawn timer out of combat. lets say 30 to 10 seconds based on level.

would this be something people could be interested in?

edit.:

  • boneplating becomes its own keystone
  • revitalize replaces its spot in r1
  • demolish now grants a permanent defensive buff for taking down turrets (lets say like 20 health per turret)
  • legendary guardian is readded to the game in r2

It would need to be way stronger as a keystone and probably would be frustrating to go against.

The reason it's "mandatory" is that there is no competition in its tier. Sure, Demolish is not bad, but it's just a luxury. If you are playing a split pusher your champ has plenty of turret damage built in to its kit. It's most important to have that extra laning power from a combat oriented rune like Bone Plating. And then the other rune in that tier is a complete fucking joke.

Meanwhile ok you could take Demolish on a tank, but as a tank your job is to engage for your team, not split push. If you do your job successfully your team will win fights and get turrets regardless of you taking Demolish or not.

The tier is just stupid. The runes aren't well thought out. Bone Plating is the only one in the tier that provides a real benefit to most champs.

I like Demolish, but I mostly use it when pushing with the team. I stand hitting the tower, and give the enemy the choice of engage me to stop the tower whack, or just leave the thing entirely. Also, 10k HP Cho does.... things... to the last few towers.

IDK, i take demolish on most of my tank builds. Like you said, split pushers dont need demolish because they have innate tower damage abilities. In the same note, tanks don't really need to take boneplating, they have things in their kits to survive without it. Since 8.11, I have found that most tanks have pretty good laning, you just have to watch-out for your opponents inevitable cheese attempt at level 1-3, depending on the champ. You survive that and the lane is pretty much over since they no longer have kill pressure on you. So you can take demolish because it allows you to actually do some damage when you go to clean side waves as the game goes on

Honestly, with a few stat changes to keep the power levels in line with where they will be, I could see Bone Plating swapped with Guardian.

i would much rather just remove bone plating honestly fuck this runes it will always be mandatory if you are using the resolve tree the only way to even consider other runes in this tier is to make them op and i dont think any1 wants that

It would just be a better https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/c/ce/Aftershock_rune.png/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/55?cb=20180319232450

i mean, thats an entirely different mechanic. and not even all champions can access it.

2.5 seconds damage/resistances on hard cc arent really directly comparable to a respawning directional shield, that grants defense based on your positioning.

Yeah sure the mechanics are different but the function is the same. They'll make you tankier for a quick second.

thats like saying its the same as overheal, or overgrowth. they also add some frontloaded defense. the mechanics are still entirely different and might appeal to different champions.

Ahpe2 votes

I'm sorry but what you just said made no sense. Overheal is used to give you more immediate defense while Overgrowth is a scaling runes that gives you Max HP as you push waves.

On the other hand you're right that they could appeal to different champions. Say you had

Camille vs. Akali and Maokai vs. Akali

I would much rather_(and frequently already do)_ take Aftershock against Akali since it's hard to get out of lane unscathed against her, but I still want to damage as a diver and it helps that After shock has Max HP, AD and AP ratios on its damage.

On Maokai I'd rather take Bone Plating as my keystone as I'm just trying survive lane, stop Akali from snowballing and out preform her mid-late. The keystone would also be efficient in teamfights/skirmishes too.

we need a generic defensive keystone.

aftershock does damage...and requires you to immobi..not all champs have cc btw

Tanks generally have cc. If you're referring to juggernauts, wouldn't they prefer Grasp or an offensive keystone if they have no crowd control?

Maybe I'm not a tank but I want to play defensively and not join the one shot fiesta - many of other classes might take it

Resolve is balanced around the jungle.

All the best power in it comes from NOT laning. (Aftershock, Revitalize, Conditioning, Font of Life).

You sacrifice plenty of early game power (which you don't need as a tank jungler) to get scaling defense (which is amazing).

Leave Resolve alone. Top laners have Conqueror.

Okay, but what about top laners who can't efficiently run Conqueror?

The Yetii Rider1 votes

They're only remaining in top because players are stubborn. Let them suffer longer and they'll give up and phase out of those lanes.

Sion, Shen, Poppy, Maokai, and Malphite are all completely functional in the jungle. They don't need to be top laners.

  1. First time i hear this
  2. I could not care less around what they balanced a single defensive tree.

Bone Plating is the Sudden Impact of the Resolve tree. Nerf it or as you say, make it a keystone.

Eh i'd say no.

Also if legendary came back it'd prolly just replace bone plating. I think the 3rd tier is kept extremely niche for a reason.

No. Because you'd make an easier to access/simpler but more effective version of Aftershock. It would make Aftershock look useless just how like Electrocute/DarkcHarvest makes Hail of Blades and Predator worse or How Glacial and Spellbook can't shine cause of abusive Klepto.

anyone who doesnt have hard cc cant really take aftershock.

also, why would aftershock automatically be worse? id say aftershock is a lot more guaranteed than a directional shield.

you have either 100% reliable defense upon hitting an enemy with hard cc, or you have defense that depends on your use of positioning during a fight.

id say those are entirely different mechanics.

If it's shielding, then it's solo bersion of Guardian. If it's like bonplating, then it would be a better version of Aftershock because it would negate damage ans everyone would have access to it. So if this keystone existed why would you take Afterahock over it if it would actually negate assasin like damage which Aftershock can't because it's bonus armor doesn't help mich at this point?

you get 4 shields on your character. one to each side. similar to how fioras vitals work.

if youre auto attacked from one specific side, or hit by a projectile, the shield would be consumed and reduce the incoming damage.

all shields respawn on a timer.

i dont see how this is the same as aftershock. its effectiveness would be dependent on how well you position and move to absorb incoming damage.

aftershock is a burst of defenses followed by a burst of damage. how are these mechanics comparable?
