Veigar's future - Patch 5.3

Veigar was my very first champ in League. He's been my main ever since and I feel like I've learned a lot about the champ's strengths and weaknesses and the nuances of his gameplay. I'm very concerned about his future because it seems like his identity MAY be in jeopardy here. I'm paranoid that Veigar has probably been on the nerf watchlist for sometime and the balance team is just using the DFG removal as an excuse to fix up some 'rework'. The language you are using is kind of troubling considering Veigar has tons of counterplay that is hidden in nuance and isn't overtly obvious like a lot of other modern 2.0 league champs.

First some of the obvious counterplay options.

  1. Mag res.

  2. Tenacity and debuff.

Now the more nuanced counterplay.

  1. FARM

  2. TEAMMATES

Veigar is probably the most underwhelming champ in the early game. No damage. Unreliable stun, long cooldown. Mana hungry. Team dependent. Let me clarify these points. I literally BEG my junglers to NEVER ever gank my lane. In the early stage, Veigar is just a glorified farming machine. A mana hungry farming machine. Ganks often deplete his mana and if they do not reap a ks (because pre 6 Veigar doesnt have the damage output to kill his own laner), then it forces him out of lane and probably 4-8 ap worth of farming.

The number one counterplay aginst Veigar is to deny him farm early on. Push lane. Zone. Roam. Veigar is extremely immobile and has trouble chasing down his laner if they roam. Early to mid game his W can't clear jack! Denies him precious ap and takes a good chunk of his mana away. Mana + Time in lane = AP. AP = viability. The fact that you don't even have to kill Veigar to counter him is a nuance a lot of players (and maybe the balance team) seem to not appreciate. Let me reiterate, without ap farm, Veigar is essentially 'countered'.

Lastly his carry potential. If you are Veigar, and you are the carry on your team, you will probably lose the game. Veigar cannot carry. He bursts down one enemy champ and then he's useless. He takes a backseat and watches his teammates either win or get beat to a bloody pulp. If your team isn't strong, then they will get the bloody pulp. If you have a lot of kills with Veigar, that means you have starved your team of those kills/gold that they need to fight after you have bursted your own self right out of the team fight. When I mastered Veigar, I always snowballed in my games. But my win rate was abysmal. After looking at tons of replays and some of my stats.. I realized the problem. I was starving my team and unlike other 'carry' champs, I couldn't carry my team to victory. I burst one of their champs and then watch my indigent team try to pickup the fight. It was depressing.

This was a long post, but in it are the nuances that people seem to always miss when it comes to Veigar. I fear nowadays that the term 'counter play' just means whether or not a champ can dodge a skillshot. Veigar is a champion that has beautiful emergent counterplay potential. You just have to look past the LCS 'jukes' and 'skillshots'. He's a macro champ that takes mana, gold, ap, and k/d management to a whole new level. Please don't destroy my tiny master of evil.

I see some pretty fine points, but I think you're missing the elephant in the room. Veigar does have a lot of counterplay ability, he just has one main problem. His stun. As low range as it may be, if you get hit by it, you're dead.

Unlike several other people who have stuns In their kit TwistedFate Xerath Viktor Syndra They require the substantial poke-until-low-then-kill. Veiger on the other hand has a stun that sets up all his nukes and will usually end with a kill. Despite his stun being something that needs to be walked into, he can as easily summon it upon a champ which can feel quite... uncounterable.

TwistedFate He has a visual showing his stun, and he has to get within AA range to use it, allowing you to punish the fool. Xerath Stun is blocked on minions and is reduced if you're closer to the fool. Viktor Even when placed on a champ, they still have enough time to get out of there.' Syndra It's a skillshot that can be avoided by careful consideration of where her orbs are.

With Veigar, he can make this appear from nowhere, if only a walk into minions to signal it, and if you're caught, you're being punished for something you couldn't avoid. I believe this is where Riot really wants to rework Veiger on, which would be healthy for him. A longer range would be considerably nice for him, if only we can have a visual to predict his stun.

Thanks for the reply. Veigar's 100-0 is his identity. He can get away with being the most potent nuke mage because his burst is:

  1. single target

  2. also removes him from the fight

He is allowed to have his one time nuke because he can't poke-until-low-then-kill before or AFTER. The main dilemma of Veigar is that if he is unable to take out his target, he is dead. This is the quintessential weakness of the champ, not a strength.

You aren't being punished for something you couldn't avoid, you are being punished for allowing Veigar to snowball. This is exactly what I was talking about. The modern league community's notion of 'counter-play' is LCS style jukes and dodges. If you don't deny Veigar farm than you WILL be punished and rightfully so. That is his primary counterplay. To help with this, he is ridiculously easy to zone! Any champ can all-in him during the farming phase with little ease. He is immobile, super squishy, mana hungry and q-farm dependent. This is the time to shut him down and force him into a wonky support role for the rest of the game.

So I never said anything about Veiger's nuke. My main problem was that of his stun. The fact that he summon a wall right on ya is what makes facing a Veiger such a bother. By staying near him to harass him to stop his farm, unless you're Xerath, you only welcome the inescapable stun that most of the time, will end up a death if you're ap caster.

In other words, lets think of it like this.

If you were stunned, without any forewarning, nothing to visualize or nothing to stand behind, and you're punished for something that you can't avoid. When a player can't do anything to stop what's coming, say Zhoyna's during a Syndra ult, or QSS agasint Zed's, then that's what the core of non-counterplay is.

He has little counterplay, whether you see it or not. Building tenacity and MR is a counter to every mage in the game, that doesn't mean that it should be the only way to counter veigar. He has two targeted abilities with ridiculous burst, and an AoE on demand stun that sets his burst up. He's boring to play, play against, and he doesn't provide any depth into gameplay. He needs a full kit rework, not some blanket buffs that help him here and there in the early stages of the game. Point and click nuke buttons aren't healthy for the game. That's why DFG got removed in the first place.

If all he did was stun you, then there would be little to complain about. You are qq'ing about Veigar's stun + nuke combo, even though you are trying to place singular emphasis on only his stun.

Its non-targetable, skill-cap dependent and unreliable. The mana cost is high so it is 'unspammable'. It has a very long cooldown. Using his stun carries risks because Veigar - unlike Ahri - has no mobility so its his only escape. Without mana items, if Veigar misses his stun once, he probably won't even have enough mana to finish his combo and you have the next 20-16 seconds to kill one of the squishiest and slowest champs in the game. 20 freaking seconds.

But all those points are moot, because it's his stun + nuke that kills champs. What's the counterplay? See: "The effortless art of denying Veigar farm".

@Cosmic Warper Only way? Literally only 5 words were dedicated to mentioning mag res and tenacity in my 6 paragraph post. You are either conveniently ignoring the actual argument or you are being deliberately obtuse. His point and click nuke requires mastery of his stun and requires an efficient farming phase. It also effectively removes him from the fight/lane. I know, the counterplay nuance is easy to miss, but its there.
