Sion's unique interaction with Yasou

Hay5eed··107 votes·8,864 views

Hey, did you know that you can stop Sion while he is ulting dead in his tracks without ever risking any of your teammates? It's simple, just windwall him, he'll crash right into it.

Seriously though Rito WHAT THE DUCK? What? Does Sion turn into a projectile when he ults? How come Yas can block Sion's ult, but not Lee Sins Resonating Strike? Or Tristana's Rocket Jump? Malphite's Body Slam? Nocturne Dash?

The wording used to explain what can/cannot be blocked by windwall is that windwall blocks projectiles, with projectiles being defined as "A projectile for the purposes of Wind Wall is a game object that lives in the world for some time moving along a pre-defined path. This all sounds complicated, but it tends to be much simpler in practice than in theory."

Later in the same post in the FAQ section: "Can it Block Nocturne's R, Malphite R, X abilty that moves Champion? NO. Champions arent missles. Anything that moves the champion wont get blocked, unless a skillshot is first required to land in order to reach the target (IE: Amumu Q, Leona E, Natilus Q)"

so why is Sion ult blocked?

UPDATE: Just tried to replicate in custom game with no effect, also Windwall no longer blocks Sion's Q, and if Yas tries to dash through Sion while he is ulting, it cause Sion to hit him and knock him up, apply damage, etc.

I'm pretty sure I've seen a Sion ult through a windwall before, meaning this is a bug that popped up.

ZeroQuest9612 votes

This is a bug. If Sion actually became a projectile during his ult Yasuo's windwall would simply delete him from the map. (Before Yasuo's release there was a bug on the PBE where Shaco's cloning was considered a projectile and if Shaco cloned over a windwall he and his clone would be deleted from the map and not reappear).

I can imagine how the rest of that game went.

"DAMNIT SHACO GANK MY LANE."

"My last magic trick... made me disappear!"

Next level AFK.

That's what Shaco wanted all along...permanent invisibility...

FastAsHeck1 votes

Shaco used to be able to stealth permanently if Morgana shielded him right as his stealth ended. Yes, he would remain stealthed forever (or until killed? idk) and yes, he would remain stealthed while attacking/casting spells. That was one hell of a bug.

This makes me wonder... if you launch a minion with his Roar of the Slayer and Yas uses Windwall, does it stop the minion and leave him there, delete the minion, or cause a sub space dimensional explosion?

Auz the Ripper3 votes

Minions are not blocked by windwall Because like poros, they are minions not projectiles

Wolfeur4 votes

Everything is a minion, even the base gates!

Auz the Ripper1 votes

If I remember correctly, they fixed that for projectiles with the new coding

Nah, fizz ult stops at the wall and stays there.

I think it's less of a bug and more of a lewd mechanic. For instance Orianna Q gets blocked, not deleted.

I'd suggest reposting this in the bugs section. I would also get a friend and go into a custom match and see if you can get a recording of it being reproduceable.

I dont have friends :(

I love it when Soraka's Q heal - the little stream that comes from her target to her, not the actual falling star projectile - gets blocked on its way BACK to her.

Vlad's Q is the same you pull the blood from Yasuo, so it doesn't come back and hence doesn't heal you.

Sion ult should destroy the WInd Wall.

Noctius281 votes

alot of stuff should pass by the wind wall, but unfortunately they have a simplified code that messes that up

Some examples:

Lux ulti (it's light, wind shouldn't stop it)

Velkoz Ulti and fissure (one is pure energy while the other is a hole in the ground, so NOT a projectile)

Any projectile that is lobbed in an arc (as long as it doesn't go low enough to touch the wall then it should pass)

It should work both ways (wind doesn't choose projectiles, all shots, enemy or allied should be stopped)

You could say the same should apply to Braum but his shield is an actual magical object that can block both light and lazers, plus he doesn't make stuff magically disappear, it just forces them on him, which is incredibly more fair

But that just might be me, who wants lore to be slightly more important to the game, specially in such a powerful ability as windwall

Last I checked Vel ult went through wind wall, though I could be mistaken.

hun... guess I was wrong about those then...

Good to know!

I'm surprised how many people don't know that I've seen many Yasuos rage intensely because they didn't realize wind can't block Lasers

Ariel the Cruel1 votes

Fun trivia: Kayle's ranged AA doesn't have a bullet and so ignores windwall. Azir's AA is a laser, and so also ignores Wind wall. Viktor's Q2 is a laser, and ignores windwall. Viktor's actual laser (E) is a projectile, and deleted by wind wall. o_O

Wolfeur1 votes

Vel's AA isn't a projectile either.

Interestingly... They're not... and they Don't...

Though Thresh Gets bonus AA damage from his E passive, so it might look that way if he's using it for last-hits.

In Vel'koz fissure is a projectile that cuts the rift open, hence the knife gets stopped by Wind Wall.

and ignite deals damage to brand while anivias wall doesn't melt close to tibbers, namis ult doesn't extinguish sunfire, her watters can heal brand, darius and garren play together in the same team... this is a competetive pvp game, so gameplay > logic&lore

I'm not asking for it to be full on lore correct, else aatrox would be afk for the first 20 minutes then appear out of nowhere and carry

I'm saying Windwall should have limitations, at the very least so that there could be counters to it

Beside most of the examples you gave aren't even wrong Ignite is a magical attack in the form (appearance) of fire from the entity previously known as a summoner while brand is a spirit made of cursed fire, not the same thing Anivia creates true Ice, unmeltable

Sunfire cape applies the same rule as ignite, it is magic in the shape of fire, therefore it follows the rules of magic and not fire, you don't walk around with a cloak covered in gasoline

Nami's water is, again, magic, and brand is made of cursed fire, none of these elements are the actual elements used to drink and heat stuff

Darius and Garen are still champions, being both controlled by entities superior to them, they have no control over their actions, so yeah, they can be on the same team

No, you can try but you'll pop out of the jungle behind because your clear is "meh" and you'll be imploded before you can make use of any attack speed due to his completely abysmal defensive stats.

Not much about him actually fits his lore in fact.... kind of disappointing on Riots part there :/

Lux ulti (it's light, wind shouldn't stop it)

It goes throught the wall because it's not a projectile, it's an area of effect that happens to have a long linear shape.

Velkoz Ulti and fissure (one is pure energy while the other is a hole in the ground, so NOT a projectile)

Vel'Koz's ult is the same as Lux. His fissure is a projectile because it's a game (long explanation here I'd rather not to have to explain).

Any projectile that is lobbed in an arc (as long as it doesn't go low enough to touch the wall then it should pass)

It would be extremely confusing. It's better as it is now: only Xerath's ult and Zigg's ult can go through the wall, because they are so high in the air (in fact, you don't even see them iirc) that it would be weird and counterintuitive otherwise.

It should work both ways (wind doesn't choose projectiles, all shots, enemy or allied should be stopped)

Nope, because friendly fire doesn't exist in this game (fortunately).

I think Bard's ult bypasses it too but I'm not sure.

There are some things like trundle pillar and a tahm w (I think?) that can cancel channeled abilities which can really fuck stuff up for your team.

junglerboy161 votes

Probably a bug, the most similar bug I've found would be where Trundle drops his pillar under an ulting Sion. since his ult's collision range is just past the pillar, and he can't be interrupted while charging, it instead pinballs him at an angle (I've seen anything from about 30 degrees to one side or the other to a full 180 degree turnaround back where he was coming from).

It isn't easy to reproduce this bug, but it definitely still happens and has happened to me personally at least half a dozen times in game.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

I don't think this is a bug? If Trundle's pillar is placed directly on a target they get moved to face a different direction...

junglerboy161 votes

It's a bug because it should either cause Sion to stop like he's hit terrain (which it doesn't) or it should effect him (since he's immune to displacement, CC, and anything else that might interrupt his ult).

Basically, they need to fix it so he either gets stunned or isn't effected at all, because getting redirected is directly in conflict with his ult's description.

Think about it, Sion is un-interruptible, during his ult until he hits a wall, a champion, or he ends it himself. leaving this pillar bug would be like leaving a bug that allowed Trundle to redirect Malphite the same way.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

Okay but look at it this way - if Trundle drops his pillar on Sion and he turns another direction but DOESN'T hit the terrain...

And Malphite and Sion ults function in two completely separate ways, so comparing them doesn't really bring much to the table. I understand that the interaction probably needs to be changed, but it's probably just an issue with how the game is allowing Sion to interact with different kinds of terrain. The actual hitbox on Trundle's pillar is fairly small once it's placed, but I think if you set your pillar on Sion and he's ulting it should just stop him dead in his tracks... Which would, of course, clean up this small interaction.

junglerboy161 votes

Malphite is completely uninterruptible when ulting, and so is Sion. When Trundle pillar hits Malphite during his ult dash, he completely ignores the pillar and proceeds, which is totally normal functionality (the knockup doesn't mess with his trajectory) however, when Sion gets hit mid charge by the pillar, instead of ignoring the knockup (since he is immune to any form of interruption) or correctly stopping him like he just hit terrain (what it should do) it instead bounces him to one side or the other.

Basically, the bug is that Trundle's pillar is acting like it's knocking Sion up, (but his dash resumes instantly after the micro knockup, as if he were simply a unit moving at very high speed rather than an un-interruptible unit), when the proper functionality should be either Sion stops dead in his tracks because he hit the pillar, or Sion continues charging straight ahead because he is immune to the displacement effect. Trundle's pillar is basically breaking the rules with this because it wants to take advantage of both of its nature simultaneously, since it is terrain, he can't charge through it, but since he is un-interuptible, the dash continues if he gets hit by the knockup. Riot needs to clean up the Pillar animation so that the time window when it is a knockup and the time when it is terrain do not overlap. Once they do that, Sion will correctly either stop from hitting the terrain or travel on unaffected because only the knockup hit.

Battlecast Sona1 votes

Just because neither can technically be interrupted doesn't mean they function the same way - Malphite can easily pass through terrain during his ultimate, while Sion cannot. Trundle drops terrain. There's going to be some sort of interaction between the two. What really needs to happen is Riot needs to look at their spaghetti code for things like trundle's pillar and Anivia's wall to prevent these kinds of weird phasethroughs from happening.
