Azir was betrayed by a man he once called his brother and was resurrected to find his empire in rubble. He just wants to restore his once great empire that he fought so hard to get. And yet lets look at our cast of Shuriman characters - "Perhaps Shurima was meant to fall" - is crazy - stabbed Azir in the back and caused all of this. Still wants MORE power - Hey Sivir? I'm your great great great great x800 granddad and you're the last relative alive. Wanna rule Shurima together? Her reply? "Meh" And now we have Taliyah going all MLK on this dude even though his last act was freeing all the slaves.

What if, and this might be completely crazy, but what if as the Shuriman story progresses and it comes to light that Azir is not in fact a villain out to enslave anyone, that Taliyah abandons her ill-founded hatred for the god-emperor? Azir is so impressed by her resolve to prevent anything harming her family of Shurima that he offers her assistance in understanding her powers. He has considerable mastery over sand and miscellaneous magic, and sand is just tiny rocks, so he must have some valuable information that can assist her, and if not, he is a gosh darn god-emperor; he can get her the training she needs.

Azir discovers someone who wants to protect Shurima as much as he does, and Taliyah learns the evil overlord out to enslave her people just wants to give them a better standard of living, though he is a little out of touch with the times. Bam. Through mutual interests a friendship is formed across hundreds of generations. Taliyah becomes the poster child of Shuriman patriotism and Azir is the emperor he always wanted to be, beloved by the people. The Late Kingdom rises from the dust of history and naught but the jaws of Apep can cast it down.

That's all it says on the subject. Maybe Azir just assumed Xerath was happy where he was at or something? He did tell Xerath he would free him a long time ago. Maybe Xerath assumed Azir changed his mind, but Azir never considered the way Xerath felt and just assumed Xerath trusted him?

They even stated in his lore that the reason he kept his plans secret was because if there ANY leak of his plans to free the slaves and essentially destroy Shuriman tradition that he would likely be overthrown or assassinated.

I doubt it ended there.

Azir has always struck me as proud, but not arrogant, and death seemed to have left a considerable mark on his ego. I mean, it speaks a lot about someone's character when their first thought on being resurrected, following what was perhaps the most traumatic moment of their existence, is to save a life.

I am certain the god-emperor would be none to pleased by someone breaking down his door and assaulting him, but let us be honest, he is a god-freaking-emperor. Taliyah throwing some rocks at him may be annoying at best, laughable at worst. And that is assuming she would shoot first and ask questions later; Taliyah strikes me as someone still invested in romantic thoughts like those of myth and legend, planning on making a grand entrance to righteously demand the emancipation of her people. At which point Azir would breakdown laughing, leaving her more than a little confused. An explanation would follow and they can put the whole misunderstanding behind them.

It is a mentor/student relationship. Yasuo gave her a philosophy, a mindset to strengthen herself as a person in addition to her powers. Azir can assist her in actually understanding her powers, how they work and so forth. Taliyah is the descendant Azir always wanted, someone who is willing to stand against a living demigod for the sake of her people.

Not to hit someone when they are down, but when did Azir fight hard to gain control of the Shuriman empire. Seems like Xerath did all the work saving him from raiders, killing contenders to the throne, helping with his education...

So Xerath did not kill all the mercenaries attacking his camo. In fact Azir used a knife and drove the knife into a mercenaries neck before the battle was over. Now that Azir was the contender for the throne and hated by his father, Azir devoted himself to earning the title of Emperor, serving on Renekton to learn how to fight, control troops, and feel the turn and tide of war. Xerath might have done a lot of work himself, but that was for his own gain. He was Azir's best friend, and as long as Azir was in power, so was he and the lore even states that he eventually becomes corrupted by the want of power. So corrupted that despite the fact that Azir granted Xerath his one wish, for him and all slaves to be free, he still betrays him to become an ascended being
