Why does nearly every Garen rush Sunfire Cape?

I get that Garen has a history with the item and that it fits very well thematically with his kit, but there are really much better first item choices on him, namely . Rushing Sunfire on Garen is like rushing Sunfire on Renekton; yes, it seemingly goes well with what your kit already does but the added mobility and damage from Cleaver is worth so much more that Sunfire should only be rushed when absolutely necessary. You may have had a cost argument back when Sunfire was 2800 and Cleaver was 3500, but that's simply not the case anymore.

Because it's basically the best item to shit on a melee AD top like Riven or Tryndamere, which is pretty much all Garen is good for.

Sunfire is just a super safe option for first item and allows for easy Proxy farming when it's safe. Honestly a lot of tank top laners rush sunfire first unless they are against an AP laner, even then its usually a second item.

It adds more for teamplay presence. All you have to do is get stuck in with the enemy and do dmg by being there. This also ends up stacking with spin allowing you to damage the largest number of enemies in the simplest way possible.

When you're playing against melee it gives you defence as well as some damage for them being close to you

Cleaver is good against people who are going to rush defence first like Malphite or nasus

That's just it though; you don't need the tankiness of Sunfire to kill melee champions as Garen, and Cleaver will kill enemies faster than Sunfire regardless of who you're facing. People think Cleaver is just for killing people who stack armor, but in actuality, it's pretty damn good at killing basically anyone.
