Overpowered
Adj.
Definition:
When that champion beats my main in a game once.
Or it's played that one time in LCS.
kappa
When a champion's supposed weaknesses are either minimal, or pretty unexplotaible, while getting to have powerful strenghs and advantages.
Basically, when scissors are too strong and there is no rock or rock is too weak.
Not that rock, silly Slogs.
Overpowered. More powerful in a given situation than the majority of your peers. Having great or many strengths with no real failings. Strong enough that not being able to pick said champion feels like a marked disadvantage to your team.
Overpowered champs aren't usually ones who just have high damage alone. They're champs who have too few, if any, weaknesses. They always have an answer to the situation they're in. They are usually very safe and loaded with utlilty and damage abilities. Tons of mages have powerful spells that deal a lot of damage, often over an area and VERY quickly. Most mages are also very squishy and lack a lot to make up for this. Often they lack mobility and sustain but more assassin-style "mages" often lack waveclear and teamfight potential instead.
Mages like
and
have no mobility to speak of. They have to position very well or die. Most of them are also very squishy. Of these champs, most people wouldn't say many are overpowered and the few who might would probably say the OP one is
. Why? Because she has a ton of utility and defense alongside her damage. Some might also add
. Why? Well because he's safe and he hits like a train.
"Well we're just listing strengths, and you said OP is in relation to a champ's peers!" With so many champs doing so many things, surely no one is OP! Not so.
is just as long ranged as
, but few would say she's overpowered. Quite the opposite in fact. She lacks the raw damage of
, his waveclear, his more reliable stun and her mana costs and cooldowns are very high. She has a few perks in her shield aiding her team but for the most part I think most people would say she's weaker than
. Now if the other mages who fill a similar niche in teams are ALSO weaker than
overall, we have a real good start on calling him overpowered. He'd be markedly better than the other mages who do what he does at what they do, giving them no real reason to exist over him.
It gets more fuzzy with champs that can do many things. Take the new hotness
. He has poke and kites REALLY well but he's not a poke mage technically. He has soft AND hard CC to set up kills OR peel but he's not exactly a support. He has burst damage to single targets and over an area, but he's not a teamfight nuke mage. He has a heal and a shield but he's not a tank or an initiator. He has a bunch of mobility but he's not really a jungler or named Lee Sin.
So how do we judge him in power? Well now we have the problem that some MMO players might be familiar with for class balance. Hybrid classes are obnoxious to balance. Say you have a class that heals, a class that nukes and a class that tanks. Ok so then you make a hybrid class that is a tank/healer. Well now if that hybrid is even close to as good at tanking as the "pure" tank and it also has a heal, no matter how insignificant, the hybrid is markedly better due to having more options. Such is the case with
(And a LOT of new champs, to be fair). Sure, there are other champs that poke or peel or kite really well, or champs that are very mobile, or that assassinate targets, or that can duel incredibly well or that can turn around a teamfight with one good ult... but he can do ALL of those things. No matter what situation you're in he has a tool for it that lets him excel and that will make him ALWAYS better than champs with a strong focus on one of those things unless he is far, far below them in how well he does what they do. He covers every base. He's never weak or a bad pick. And while lacking a huge weakness can be a perfectly fine "strength" for a champ, most characters without weak spots are also not insanely STRONG at anything either.
Ekko is. And that's why people are screaming OP. Overtuned kit. Unbalanced. Because he does what a lot of other champions do well enough to replace them... and on top of that he does other things that they CAN'T do as well. The only other kind of "overpowered" amongst champions is the one where a champion has a skill or mechanic that no other champion has an answer for how to deal with. Mobility often is THIS kind of "overpowered" compared to less mobile champs. Mobility is a HUGE advantage in the game that more and more champs have more and more of. It gives champs based on skillshots or melee a really tough time, sometimes to the point of invalidating them entirely. Not shockingly, mobility is often complained about, or given as a reason why some champs are overpowered.
is quite mobile.
So yeah. That's what overpowered means to me. It means a champ is too good at too much or is simply as strong in his strong points as other champions who do the same thing, but with no meaningful weaknesses or extra abilities and utility besides the thing that they're already SUPPOSED to do. An assassin doing good damage is fine. An assassin who's mobile is fine. An assassin who has both and also a ton more utility and defenses from a slow, a huge heal, a huge shield, a slow, an execute, a stun, ANOTHER slow, and huge AoE nuke... well that's over-reaching a bit and needs to go.
when im a 21 - 5 nid and stil can not duel a 0 - 8 irelia

When somebody can 100-0 you with no repercussions or risk factor.

so u mean like
or
?
QQ is real. They still put themselves at risk in a couple of way. Zed has to melee to use his passive, and now he has to wait before going back to his ult's shadow. LB has to dash RIGHT on top of you, so learn some counterpicks like Ahri, Azir, Annie, Liss, so you can just cc her in the middle of the dash. These guys really aren't hard to play against if you just pick up some mechanics.
Zed will all in you when you are 50% or less, never at full hp. Which is rather easy to reach with Zed's manaless low cd harass. At that point, BOTRK+ignite+Q+E+R proc can easily kill you. Heck ignite+ult proc can kill you if you are unlucky and are below 50%.
LB is currently the safest midlaner for something. It doesnt matter if her dash distance and return place are fixed, when she can combo you for a considrable amount bypassing minions (which protects her) in a minuscule amount of time.

Since when Mechanics is counterpicking? Apparently counterpicking being an option is OK now? Does that mean we wont get more nerfed antimobility champions like Ryze, Zilean and Veigar? If so then yay.
Zed will all in you when you are 50% or less, never at full hp.
Sounds fine to me. Even Orianna kills you when you are at 50% or less and that's a utility mage, good luck finding any midlaner that doesn't kill you when you are walking around with 50% hp while playing a relatively squishy character.
Orianna has the risk of:
-People flashing out of her ult. -Actually going OoM trying to poke you down. Specially with W's cost. -Low range for being a mage leads to being easy to counter harrass.
A lot times everything that goes inside Zed's ult is targeted (BotRK, ignite, AA), and thus has 0 risk involved unless the Zed is a much worse player that his opponent. Oh, and he has basicaly no costs if you have hands.
I'm at my
with LB.
When said champion gets smurfed and beats at least 30 bronzies. Said Bronzies must also come to forums and post complaints about OPness of said champion.

A champ is overpowered when someone doesnt know how to play against them, or is generally not good, or picked a champ they dont know, and said enemy champ roflstomps them or other equally bad people on their team.
Every week a few more "nerf x champ" threads pop up right after someone loses to them.
When a champion's mechanics are extremely straight forward, and the only way to stop them from snowballing is to have an entire team that knows how to not feed Fiora.
When you can be 0/4 and still push teamfights in your favor by pressing R
Balanced champions have a power level under 9000 Overpowered champions have power levels over 9000

what if theyre power level is exactly 900?
When a champion can not be outplayed.
When someone can be effective with little or no risk. Dealing high amounts of damage or CC with little or no risk. The causes for this can be multiple things: too much range, too much movement speed, too much projectile speed (unavoidable skillshots that deal high damage), unavoidable spells that are very strong but only avoidable in rare situations.
Even a champion that has low amount of damage/CC, but can fire all their spells at such a range/speed that the enemy can't do anything about it or retaliate, would be overpowered.
A spell that I believe is somewhat OP is Soraka's Starcall. The OP part is not the damage/healing itself, but the range and AoE are a lot of times completely unavoidable. Because of this I can constantly poke an enemy even if they are a lot better than me. This is coming from someone who plays Soraka a lot. She also has an underpowered spell though, her E that stuns AoE, but is extremely easy to avoid because of the delay in stunning. The only time it ever can hit someone is when they are in a terrible terrible position. < This isn't saying Soraka herself is OP (definitely not), but her Starcall is an example of an OP design >
Also a champion is OP when they can easily beat someone else who is a lot better than them, aside from counters.
When there is absolutely no way to out trade even with a better play and better positioning and their champ is literally tanking your tower and still come out ahead.
1 core item no boots in after 20 min into the game and then, TRIPPLE KILL, QUADRA KILL, PENTA KILL because champ ability numbers are too high.
Overpowered
A champion that beat me because I didn't know what to do against him/her/it. Needs NERFS RITO PLZ.
Anyone who deals high dmg with little effort. You can't play vs anyone who kills you in 1 second without a chance to do anything.
with devourer and smite was better assasin than Zed and company :D.
I think that
is still annoying, because she can kill you before the CC reaches her - you will have to wait for her to use her E, before using CC, but if she has flash, she can reposition and still instakill your team with ult.
Overpowered A champion is stronger than other champions; they have an overall power level which is higher than others. This generally means that their numbers are too high, for example they deal too much damage for how mobile they are or how much utility they posses. Being overpowered is a balance issue, and can be fixed by adjusting numbers (e.g. nerfing the champion.)
Overpowered: A champion which greatly increases its team's odds of winning by its mere presence. I'm not talking about team composition, like how Alistar would make Yasuo stronger, but how the specific champion is almost impossible to deal with. Either because it can do a lot of damage to enemy champions while leaving no opportunity to fight back because they're impossible to catch or they're too tanky or by having the ability to push lanes and kill towers very fast and escape in complete impunity if you try to stop them. CC heavy champions can also fall in this category if they either do too much damage or if their CC is too strong and reliable. Good examples right now are Sejuani, Leblanc and Gragas.
Underpowered: The opposite. A champion which greatly decreases its team's odds of winning by its mere presence, and not merely based on team composition. These champions are usually outright incapable of fulfilling their role for one reason or another. As an example, any tank which can't force the enemy team to focus them in one way or another. If the enemy team can just walk past a tank while ignoring it, it's useless. A marksman which is less mobile and does less damage than other marksmen would also fall into this category. An assassin which can't burst hard enough to kill its target and has a long cooldown on its burst or is very limited by mana would also be underpowered. Good examples right now are Varus, Teemo and Sion (yes, Sion).
When one aspect of the game, whether it is a champion, item, etc. that creates a situation where one aspect either has few weaknesses to balance out its strengths, its strengths are so great that the weaknesses are irrelevant, or its strengths crowd out other picks because the other picks cannot compete.
for about 2 weeks last season, and
for about 1 week (my prediction) currently.
Overpowered is a broad term used to describe an imbalanced champion that is stronger than average. There are a lot of terms that can be used for imbalanced champions, but the distinguishing lines between different types are completely blurred for people who don't spend their time analyzing the game.
Please remove swain from this game he is the most annoying champion and he never fucking dies he has 1 ability because the others don't matter if you hit them or not. His stun is this 1 ability which doesn't even matter if you hit it actually unless youre going in 1v5 because then you may actually die while killing the other 5 if you hit e on one champion this is not the case though.
*other abilities have no skill to hit
