Day 1 Impressions: You're a mean one, Mr. Shen
So the I've played a few fair games, and I want to break down what's working, what isn't and what it feels like. KEEP IN MIND THIS IS TOP LANE SHEN, YOUR MILEAGE MAY VERY
The passive feels... not at all. This is truly the definition of a passive passive, you don't feel it's hand protecting you, but you know that it IS. It doesn't take a scientist to tell you a health scaling shield on a reducible 8 sec cooldown is awesome, and I have a feeling a large portion of Shen's power budget is in this ability. You have no fear of ignite, at all. What's better, the shield allows you to go toe to toe (in bursts) with characters like Nasus and Riven. The sword is annoying, but it allows for your Q to exist as it is, so I'll gladly deal with it.
The new Q is DEADLY, these three health% AA is where the majority of your lane pressure lie. But we are now melee dependent, meaning landing that spirit blade for the slow and extra damage is vital to succeed. Right now enemy champs don't get why you're circling them, but once they wise up I have a feeling it won't be so easy. Still the short, and I mean SHORT cooldown is a great feeling, and allows you to get your passive 2-3 times in a skirmish, damn near constant in a team fight.
The new W is ... Well, it's powerful but not in a good feeling way. 2 seconds of dodging all basic attacks is definitely strong, but I'm not jumping off a cliff for it. Perhaps if it protected you from something else, or had an effect on blocking an attack, but right now it FEELS like you just press the button after dashing then forget you ever had it. The cooldown is attrocious, but I understand why and I don't see that changing in the near future.
One thing I think riot has lacked in recent champion releases is ways to improve communication of 'safe zones' to players. Short of a voice clip playing saying "I am protecting you so don't move out of this circle dum dum", I'm not sure what else can be done.
Shen's dash is Shen's dash. Do I need to say anything? No? Good. Though I'm VERY happy to see the health ratio attached, giving it a bit of oomph at later game. I've killed people with a dash when I simply meant to taunt them.
I'm rather sad the ult doesn't have any health ratios, but It's still the same ult you know and love. And it feels like a missed opportunity for your blade to do something cool, like instead of Shen standing there why couldn't he dash across the map at light speed passing through terrain. But that's just me fantasizing.
All this together, I think Shen is in a healthier place, more fun place, and I'm glad they kept the tank-ninja theme.
P.S.: Avoid Thunderlords, you'll get more mileage off Grasp of the Undying.
