Am I the only one who thinks its not that hard getting S on support?

Eedat··36 votes·2,200 views

So Ive been playing "Fill" (aka 80% support) the past few days and I've noticed it really hasnt been that hard to get an S on support. I've gotten like 4-5 solid S's and a few S- already just in a few days.

I mean I even got a solid S on the losing team one game

http://imgur.com/a/b9WHg

Just my 2 cents but it really doesnt seem to be extraordinarily difficult to get an S on Supp. Jung/Top main btw

It's not hard, people just complain too much.

StainedViolett2 votes

Then tell me how then ive gone 1/2/42 and still only got an A. its damn hard to get an A on a supp unless you get kills. it seams the only way to get an s or above is to get at least 6 kills on a supp and less than 4 deaths, but as a supp you are not trying to get kills so its not exactly healthy.

Sonasaurous1 votes

So I've played support like twice in the past week, both times I've gotten S's. (I am also sure I received S scores on these two games because I got champion tokens) The most recent game was with Morgana, where I went 4/2/21, contributed 58% to the total damage dealt on my team, placed 30 wards, and destroyed 5 wards. My total gold was 15k. The second game from about a week ago was with Janna, where I went 1/7/19, contributed 39% to the total damage, placed 31 wards, and destroyed 11 wards. My total gold was 14k. I also won both of these games.

With Morgana I got an S. With Janna I got an S+.

Let's check your stats now... http://euw.op.gg/summoner/userName=VioletWolf

I can't say I see a support game of yours where you're 1/2/42...but...

Zyra, 2/8/6, 38% dmg contribution, 18 wards placed, 1 ward destroyed, 9k gold. (loss) Lux, 1/3/1, 20% dmg contribution, 20 wards placed, 6 wards destroyed, 6k gold. (loss) Sona, 1/6/6, 41% dmg contribution, 11 wards placed, 1 ward destroyed, 7k gold. (loss) Nami, 3/6/23, 49% dmg contribution, 40 wards placed, 0 wards destroyed, 14k gold. (loss) Thresh, 1/1/11, 33# dmg contribution, 20 wards placed, 2 wards destroyed, 7k gold. (win)

However, stats aside, I've noticed that you have a trend of not buying items? Your games are, on average, 30 minutes long, yet you only have two items? Usually item 2301 and item 3107. And then a item 2055 that you should have probably placed instead of hoarding it in your items. And you rush upgraded boots?

I mean, to be fair, let's look at my stats when I lose a game: Sona, 3/6/17, 83% dmg contribution, 22 wards placed, 4 wards destroyed, 10k gold total. (loss)

However, with my 10k gold, my build was item 3092item 2049item 3504item 3111item 3028item 3114

Granted, I still got an A that game. But let's just look at those key differences. When I'm losing and I'm behind, I'm still building items with the gold I have. When you're losing and behind, it looks like they first item you're saving up to buy is a item 3116.

So, perhaps you should try optimizing your gold to buy items that can help you support more effectively. Maybe instead of rushing the upgraded sightstone or boots, you should rush your first support item. For mage supports, like Zyra or Lux, it might be better for you to rush item 3092 instead of building item 2301 because the active is great for initiating or chasing--which would help you as a support. For Sona or Nami, or anyone with a heal or substantial shield, I personally rush item 3504 because the passive helps my adc in fights.

Just my two cents.

ill be the first to admit ive had a bad week but you've taken some of my worst games (thanks for highlighting that, not to complain but ive been having some ping issues as of the past 2 weeks ). As foritem 2055 I buy at least 2 and place it until it gets destroyed or need a better more efficient position and almost never leave base without one unless im full build and i average about 5 a game and if we are doing comparisons i saw on your op.gg you almost never place any. The advice about item 3504 is appreciated i should probably start to take it more giving me 20% extra shield and heal because item 3107 has a 10% passive on it too so actuality if you compare what i had vs what you had it is the same amount of extra shield and heal stats . when it comes to item 3116 maybe i should save it for later on or not get it at all but the slow is useful when behind although i could start to getitem 3092 to slow instead so on that issue ill admit you are right.

Sonasaurous1 votes

All I did was look up your most recent games. I'm not about to scroll through your entire match history, I don't have time for that.

And yeah, that's fair that I don't place a lot of item 2055. Granted, normally I place a control ward and it stays there for 20 minutes, so I don't see a point in stocking up in them when I could be building other items. But that's just me.

In terms of item 3504 and why I would build that first before item 3107 (because yes I'm biased), is that item 3504 gives 60 ability power (and 10% bonus heal and shield, it got nerfed a while back), as opposed to item 3107, which gives health and regen stats. Especially on champions like Bard Janna Lulu Lux Morgana Nami Sona Soraka whose heals and shields scale with AP because it makes the heal/shield more effective.

item 3116 is not a bad item, it's just better as a later item. I used to buy Rylai's to finish off my ap support build, and sometimes I still do, but if the mage on our team already has it I usually forgo it unless I really just want to AP (which is about to be nerfed next patch) just because of how stacked slows now work.

I hope this helps.

I've noticed it's a lot easier to get an S on support if you play wrong. The more kills and CS you steal, the higher your chances of getting an S. Every time you sacrifice yourself to save someone else like your ADC or midlaner, that's just one death closer to A+. Sticking with the team and doing your job? Fuck that, how are you going to get CS and exp that way? You want your S don't you? Well go abandon your team and farm top. Would you rather have a victory and an A-, or a defeat and an S+ because you've got to choose one or the other.

Eedat3 votes

Thats just not true lol. Here is a game where I have 0 kills and 4 CS and still got an S

You're playing as Janna though. A Janna that's doing well has numbers that can be tracked by the system. Healing done, damage done, etc. Even then, CS is factored into the calculation, but because you have a way to meaningfully contribute to the other things considered, it's not as important.

Meanwhile, champions like Braum have only one number to track their success. KDA. Even a score like 0/2/30 is not enough for an S under that system, because you can't contribute any healing or damage. You might be able to turn that B+ into an A- with some utterly amazing ward control(which is an incredibly underweighted stat), but if you want to get an S you'd better start stealing kills and stealing CS because the system has nothing else to measure you by. "Skillshots blocked" and "Perfect 5 man ults landed" are not numbers the mastery system can calculate, and likewise the system has no idea that a 7/2/23 Braum got all those kills by timing his Q to steal the last hit.

Eedat3 votes

You're playing as Janna though

It literally doesnt matter because I'm being compared to other people who are also playing Janna lol

Shadragon8 votes

The point is that Janna's effectiveness can be measured in numbers, but other supports like Leona or Braum, not so much. Getting an S on enchanter supports isn't what's difficult. It's getting an S on vanguard supports, because the system doesn't track anything that vanguards do.

Eedat3 votes

Saving a teammate from certain death isnt reflected in numbers lol. Still, it doesnt matter because it's comparing you to people on the same champ. If braum or whatever doesnt average as high number as Janna, it is completely irrelevant because the bar isnt being held to the Janna numbers. It's literally completely irrelevant

Jax the Stampede2 votes

Is it really compared to each champ specifically with only that one champ? I thought it was more specific to your role. That's both interesting and valuable information.

Leetri3 votes

If you play Jungle Soraka your stats should only be compared to other Jungle Sorakas. Unless they recently changed it, I've seen no mention of any changes, it should still work that way.

Jax the Stampede2 votes

My lvl 7 Volibear Leona Blitzcrank (among others) say otherwise. Pretty sure that after they hit level 5 I didnt' have to play more than 8 games with any individual one to get all the tokens they needed to be level 7 (including the lvl 6 tokens). I main support so maybe I just know some tricks that others don't utilize like I do, but nonetheless I feel that tank supports are the easiest to get tokens with, healers coming in second.

doesn't it track damage absorbed?

I remember it being so hard to get a S on Kench. I would go somewhat around 2/0/34 and still no S. In fact, sometimes not even a A. The old system was wack with vanguards, It was hard enough getting mastery 7 on Kench back then and I'm really glad they updated the system. Though the new system still needs some work, I'll take it up from the old system any day.

Xonra1 votes

" compared to other people who are also playing Janna"

*In your division/rank. You aren't being matched against ALL Janna players across all ranks. If that were the case no one below like, Plat would ever get an S. You are in Gold, and Janna isn't exactly played a ton in Gold (You are likely the only one I have seen, and I've only seen it from your screenshot).

Because a lot of times in lower elo people just think they don't have to do much as support. I usually get an S too when I play it, and that's my least played role. So many times people just want to pick a mage support and sit and do nothing for 30 mins so they can be "another damage source later." When I support, I always protect my carry and pressure theirs whole laning phase.

RocketRelm1 votes

I trend towards playing 'mage support' ish stuff whenever I have to support. The difference is I don't "sit around and do nothing", I be the 'another damage source' directly from lvl 1.

Duke Anax4 votes

exactly it should actually be harder to get an S on Janna, because you actually need to do good, rather than getting a lucky game.

ShaolinToilet5 votes

Janna is by far the easiest champion for me to get an s with as support. Alistar is second.

Xela Syab4 votes

adc dies 12 times with you playing janna and you get an S? [zombie-brand-mindblown]

WinTheWarOnPants1 votes

that's how it works "be a good sup and sacrifice yourself for your team."=B- "play back all game and make sure that you survive even if it means letting your team die"=S+ [slayer-pantheon-thumbs]

Marshbouy3 votes

Getting an S isn't even hard. You just need to play proficiently, which i guess can be hard for some.

Praetor Notorias3 votes

Depends on the ADC. If you have one with a starving brainslug on them, then it's very difficult to get an S. A half decent ADC that can trade and last hit who also knows a decent build order to maintain power in the varying phases of the game are generally much easier to get an S with.

I got booted from a game for 10 minutes, came back 6 levels behind and still managed to get an S+ with Galio. (That's happened more than once cause my ISP has gotten flaky on the weekends) But someone doing slow-roll EZ who can't trade efficiently and never gets any kills because they have no kill power is very difficult to get an S with unless you can find some other laner to latch on to mid-game.

Garlic Butter3 votes

When 14/3/49 is not even an A+ on Morgana. Yes, yes it's pretty difficult when the enemy team 4 camps you bot all match and tunnels exclusively you.

That said Janna is pretty easy to get S on because she is insanely safe and is very difficult to KS on (as are several other champs). So a few supports have really low thresholds for S- (and almost all melee champs have very low thresholds when played bot lane/sup).

But just TRY to get S rank on any support on ARAM the bar for score is so high it's ridiculous. (Though not hard on: Lux, Sona, Soraka, just don't die).

IcyPepper2 votes

Isn't champion mastery comparing you to other players playing the same champion in the same role?

Xonra1 votes

*In the same general rank

Is why saying "lawl easy to get S on support Janna" is less impressive, because Janna doesn't exactly have a high play rate in gold/silver

Mysticman891 votes

Rank/MMR has no influence on grades, you're compared to all performances (on the same champ in the same role), from sub-30 genuinely new players to top tier challenger performances.

Çhåryzård2 votes

Depends on the support imo since it takes into account other people's scores.

I main Nami support, I've gotten S's before (I'm lvl 7)

I've had games where I go like 0/0/12 or have a perfect score and don't even get an S-

0/5/28

3/4/21

0/0/23

2/3/20

All pretty good scores of mine recently where I participated in a good amount of kills and had a good assist count with no S-, but then I get the same or a similar score on another support and get an S. It isn't impossible, but to me it doesn't feel consistent at least with the champions I play so who knows.

Eedat2 votes

Thats because KDA is only one factor. You have to place and clear wards and particpate in objectives. Probably some other factors going on too

Çhåryzård1 votes

I do that too, I always make sure to buy multiple pinks (now "control wards" I guess) and I always get red trinket and sightstone

Mysticman892 votes

Yeah, support is no harder than any other role in getting an S rank, since grades are all relative to others on the same champion in the same role, which pretty much by definition means S ranks are the same relative difficulty no matter what champ/role combo you're using.

The thing is people are not equal skill at every role/champ combo, so individuals particular aptitudes for stuff makes things feel harder/easier depending on where they go. With support in particular, an awful lot of people are terrible at support (as they're only familiar with a more damaging/kill oriented play style that most other roles expect, so try to do that on an underleveled and gold starved support, rarely to good result), so theres plenty of people who say S on support is harder than other roles.

Those who actually main support (myself included) probably won't have any huge amount of difficulty getting S ranks. Personally the vast majority of my S ranks have been in the support role, and when my weekly chest unlocks I'm usually looking through my champion list for potential new supports for the S grade, rather than some people who probably avoid supports like the plague when deciding how to unlock their next S chest.

grug2 votes

the best way to get an s as support is to play a champion that never goes support and perform really well on them that way it compares you to other people playing the same champ as support (virtually none)

Xonra2 votes

tl;dr Entire point of this thread was to brag and farm upvotes about a topic that no one has brought up in well over a month.

People haven't been complaining about this for a while now since Riot fixed it. It WAS a problem. It isn't currently a problem.

Stop going back a month in time to find things to try to be "right about".

Like this guy who just responded to me a bit ago saying I was wrong about a post I made before the preseason patch even dropped (was right then, would be wrong if I made it today, but he just had to say "see you are wrong", much like this thread is).

If the team is winning, is super easy, if the game is even, only if you are a KDA whore.

It's only easy to get an s as support relatively. Last game I went 16-2-11 as adc, went on a 13 kill spree despite being focused, had only a few cs less than the most, and helped with most objectives. Got an A+ despite having the best kda. 2 of my teammates got an s.

If it's that hard to get an s, something's wrong. I feel like an S- would be for doing your job flawlessly (few deaths, helping with most objectives, having high kill participation, outfarming the enemy laner), getting an S would be a semi-carry of the game, where your team likely could have won had you been only average, and an S+ for a hard carry. In reality, it wants you to have 300 farm unless you're support, or just go 40-0.

In the ADC/Mid/Top case, CS is a another big factor. If it's crap, no S- S S+ for you. It's not hard to do at all.

6Sfool1 votes

Not quite. If it's not godlike, no S for you. I had 15 cs less than the toplaner who rarely left lane, and 50% more than what the other adc had. The sheer amount of cs it expects you to have is insane. Like 250 in a 30 min game.

Kubox1 votes

Getting S as a support is just as easy as other roles.

What many people fail to realize is that you gotta work for it and some supports have it easier than others. If you pick Soraka/Janna, sit in lane behind your carry and do nothing but peel and ward (and stick to that even in late-game), you'll get an A : you did a good job, but nothing amazing. If you roam and setup kills (successfully) as well as do the previous two, you should S ratings on a regular basis.

Depends on who and how you play, for instance, when I play zyra, I like to stuff my cockpit full of cherry blossom leaves and scream "KAMIKAZE" when I enter the teamfight, from there I proceed to nose dive straight into the full zyra combo and detonate the enemy team while killing myself in the process, ensuring I die in the height of my power. It may not be the most conventional strategy, but its psychological impact is potent, potent enough to get me a 62% winrate over 300+ games at least, I think I only got an S in like 10 games though lol.

Usually to get an s, or s+ you just have to have a good kill partipication, less than 4 deaths and placed some wards, i never felt anything more is really needed (source :soraka/taric/lulu/thresh lvl 7, leona/alistar/sona/nami level 6)
