I see we're reworking Yorick after the Mage and Taric updates.

So please tell us, the community and everyone who loves Yorick, what you're actually going to do to him, before it's live and unchangeable. Yorick is one of the only champions I feel like I can play every game over and over. I would just really hate to see him go down in flames and still never be played.

Just wanted to say it before it's too late. :(

He keeps getting pushed back because Riot has no clue at all what they are going to do with him.

LegacyDAP5 votes

I mean they could ask the community. They've been doing that more recently, so maybe it was good they've been pushing it back until now.

As a Yorick main myself, I am hopeful that they will get the input of the player base because I have some thoughts on Yorick. Mostly that his kit currently is balanced around the % damage reduction in his passive that would better served on the Ultimate in some way. There are other adjustments I would do, but nothing like a lot of the reworks suggested here that end up making a ton of new coding issues or passives that make him need to be in a lane more or benefit from farming. . . I don't think he needs to be another stack champ or have a passive resource based around the NPC units in the game. Such alterations may be thematic but really mess up the playability of a champion and force a more predictable and static gameplay that quickly becomes repetitive and boring.

I am extremely hopeful though, and really look forward to a Poppy level of update, which to date may be the best rework of a difficult to balance champion to date.

Silents4294 votes

Please no, for the love of god do not let the community balance a champion.

We can have the occasional good idea, but good lord so many people have no idea what balanced or healthy kits actually are, nor how to preserve Yorick in a meaningful way.

SociopathFriend2 votes

I remember the guy who thought Karthus ult should affect enemy towers- I still maintain that's one of the worst ideas I have ever heard from the community.

LegacyDAP1 votes

If you say "the community" it kind of generalizes the community as a whole. There has been a lot of good ideas that have come within the community.

Silents4291 votes

Very few, and I did acknowledge we have come up with a good idea sometimes.

And I am fully confident in saying 99% of the people on these boards don't have the first clue on proper balance.

LegacyDAP1 votes

You can have good ideas that are unbalanced. Just look at our current balance team, Kappa. Just kidding. On a serious note, yes I agree most of the community shouldn't balance, but they should be able to give ideas and inputs regardless.

I am probably one of a few people who really really love the CURRENT Yorick, and will still play him (played him a decent amount in ranked last season). I'm worried about what Riot is going to do to him and I am worried it is going to be the same as my other favorite champ (sona) that Riot took behind the woodshed and made so bad even Monte and Doa (LCK casters) were mockingly talking about how bad she was and needed a rework because she was bad and boring.

I worry the same fate for Yorick as I've not personally liked a lot of the reworks on champs I personally play.

Skarner - turned into a mini game bot that is not in a good place Sona - just...let's not talk about this Olaf - I don't hate him anymore but I will always be confused why they felt a champ with a good win percentage would need a rework that drastic.

There are a few others that were questionable, but I didn't and don't play them (like Cass). I just don't trust reworks as a whole as Sion and Poppy have been the only ones that turned out 100% positive in my opinion. I'm worried for Yorick because it is a well known fact Riot doesn't like Yorick's kit, which could mean bad things for those of us who actually DO like his kit.

ShadowParker1 votes

We need to be honest here. His kit will get drastically changed. It's what happened with Poppy and Sion, not too mention both were full scale reworks. As you said, they've both been very well received, so I have faith that Yorick will be fine.

Also more then just those 2 have been well recieved.

I think we should just make him a champion that is centralized around his minions rather than his own damage. This way, we can have a Heimerdinger that's much more dependent on his minions that he summons depending on the situation.

And no, not situations like "I need to heal" or "Damages," I'm talking "This guy deals burst damage, I should utilize this ghoul's bonus" and etc. I have faith in Riot to make something good after seeing their success with the Shen rework.

I don't know whether to be excited or upset for this rework, I guess it all depends on how it turns out.

You should be excited because his current kit is boring, buggy, doesn't deliver on the concept of controlling a bunch of zombies, and has too little counterplay in it for Riot to ever allow it to be really good.

I 100% disagree

buggy

as someone who actually plays him, no it isn't.

doesn't deliver on the concept of controlling a bunch of zombies

Again, as someone who plays him, I disagree.

and has too little counterplay in it for Riot to ever allow it to be really good.

This is false also. His kit and the champ itself are a bit of counterplay To himself seeing as he is super mana and item reliant. You shut him down in lane and it takes him a very long time to catch back up.

Nogrim1 votes

i agree, he is my second most played champ. there are a lot of little tricks in his kit that separate good from bad yoricks.

imho i hope they don't overhaul him, what i am hoping they do is focus on the ult. imho that is the crappiest part of his kit, its actually beneficial to avoid putting points in to it until you have to.

NichtHurz1 votes

That's his problem after all, he's one of those champs who need to counter themselves to not be completely stupid. Seriously...I mainly played top at the time Yorick was released, it was the most frustrating and boring experience I've ever made in this game. No matter what, people would just pick Yorick and from that point you could've also went away making yourself a nice meal instead of playing. I just hope they completely delete his current kit and don't take anything from it for the rework. His ult might be something to preserve, since it's insanely powerful used right and actually requires some thought to use in teamfights.

I'm okay with laning vs Yorick right now, but that's only because he's pretty weak imo and I can still destroy him in most cases even though laning vs Yorick is just utterly dull and unfun...

Sachabot1 votes

It would be a shame if he were forgotten. [slayer-jinx-wink]

Sachabot1 votes

I will, actually, because I played him in ranked and got one of my best solo kills on a Renekton.

LegacyDAP2 votes

I think the funniest comment I ever got is when the laner I was going against looked me up and said, "Please go easy on me," right before I first blooded him.

Yeah, 20XX is after 2016...

* checks the schedule, sees Yorick *

April already?

As someone who's never played Yorick, I'm a little excited for him to stop being in Limbo. Riot has considered him to terrible to allow on free week rotations, but not bad enough to prioritize for too long.

LegacyDAP1 votes

I'm excited too, he really is a unique champion that favors only certain types of players. I've always thought raising the dead was such a cool thing, and I am really happy to see a rework, just more nervous that it'll turn bad, and he won't really be a necromancer anymore.

I'm not sure what he is going to be now since they just shifted what Yorick is supposed to be and projected it onto Morde 100% (thematically as far as raising the dead). Afraid they are just going to turn him into a generic juggernaut hitting people with a shovel and that's it.

Personally the only thing that is mainly wrong with him is how uninteractive he is. He summons ghouls and for the most part doesnt do too much himself.

They mainly need to make Yorick more interactive. As soon as he gets manamune, he just farms off ghouls and pokes you with them til the end of time.

With this my guess would be get rid of some of his ghouls(Or rather do something like TF and make all the ghouls on a single spell but have it so he can choose which one he wants) and give him other abilities that actually give him a reason to actually do things himself.

I am by no means a Yorick player, but back when I topped a lot and saw Yorick, the game mostly consisted of him being careful til he could get his mana regen, then he farmed with ghouls til teamfights started. IT made it boring for you since if you have any sustain, his ghouls are just more creeps for you so you have no fear of being kicked out of lane. But at same time you couldn't really go on him since he was far away to begin with. Not to mention Yorick barely was aggressive usually, just content farming forever.

Like people complain about Vlad or Nasus, at least Nasus has to get into the thick of things to do it and Vlad while also range doesn't have pets do it for him. He still has to use his Q to last hit things, which gives you small bits of time to smack him a little.

It's probably waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too early in the design stages to give concrete "this is what we're planning".

Also, how can you play Yorick for so many games and not pass out?!?

LegacyDAP1 votes

To be honest, I only played like 35 in a row once (2 or 3 weeks ago), and haven't touched him much since, but if I were to name one champion that I'm forced to play for the rest of my life, it would be Yorick.

Blue Moon Wolf1 votes

I think the last thing they had mentioned for him was this kit where he would passively spawn Ghouls and his abilities would interact with them (one of which makes a ghoul explosive when it gets hit by your ability), but apparently that idea got scrapped years ago.

ParaBellam1 votes

His E will become a skillshot :^)

The best thing I can see happening is if he gets some % max health on a skill or two. Most tanks/fighters have some sort of one of those. Yorick will probably get the Garen/Darius treatment where his early game gets wrecked a bit but his late game improves dramatically.

He should've been in the Juggernaut Update tbh.

Zarkkast1 votes

I'm fairly certain they will remove his ultimate, it has only caused trouble in the past.

Hopefully they will keep his ghouls and change QWE in other ways.

Simple... Removing mana cost and gold from minions. Ult now can copy opponents <3

I hope Yorick gets the Poppy treatment, they did her right. I do hope they share their thoughts because some reworks in the past have been terrible. I think almost all Yorick players can agree on a few things though, the mana gating makes for stale build diversity for the most part (everyone but me builds manamune it seems), his lack of mobility makes him more vunerable than it should, and that he could be a bit stronger in teamfighting situations.

The solutions seem pretty obvious really, adjust the mana costs to not drain him in a single volley of skills or make the skills individually strong enough that he only needs cast them one at a time. Make up for his lack of mobility with some kind of massive damage reduction or CC at close range, thus he doesn't need to be as mobile if he can ignore damage or stop enemies from chasing as he walks away. Lastly give him some utlity outside of a faux revive for a teamfight.

Rather than just point out the weaknesses in his current design though, I thought perhaps providing some ideas might help more. I suggest making his sustain close range and frontal cone AoE (still summons healing ghoul) instead of a targetted and semi long ranged, making his Q a skillshot fast moving ghoul hit that still procs an auto reset and extra damage on next attack, and giving all of his skills a free second cast that each have effects that correlate with the base skills. Healing ghoul can be recast after a second to do a frontal cone AoE that heals Yorick, Speed ghoul can be recast a sec later to massively increase Yoricks movespeed toward it (or pull Yorick to it), Slowing ghoul could be recast to pull nearby enemies toward it (like Diana's pull but centered on the ghoul). I feel his Ult should gain the damage reduction and boost from his current passive and a new passive involving being around dying minions or monsters to replace the current one. I would like to see something interactive, perhaps a way to have his passive be able to send the souls of the dead to be his eyes, scouting out nearby bushes and such.

So Riot, help us out here, share some ideas maybe?

Bo Beck1 votes

I hope they keep AD Yorick JG alive.(hue) I've always had more fun with that than a bullshit spam based laning phase. I also got my first quadra kill with him in a 1v5, even though the last guy flashed the wall before the penta.

LegacyDAP1 votes

You know what I love about Yorick the most? Being able to be played literally everywhere. But, I feel like Riot might try to force him into top lane with ghouls and stuff, but that's just my idea. Since top is basically a split push get the turret first lane.
