When you build a tank item, you are only getting about 80% of the gold you spent as value. That is assuming your opponents don't have any anti tank. Since most top laners run conqueror, mages getting 40% pen from void staff, adc getting 35% pen from lord dominik regards, and many champions having true damage or % max hp damage, tank items plummet to around 40% value. The best defensive items in the game are item 3053 item 3026 item 3157 as their protective effects can't be mitigated.

Pretty much, you sacrifice building damage to live like 1-2 seconds longer at most. Not worth it unless you can 100% count on your teammates to properly do damage in your stead. Stacking pure health/resistance items doesn't even feel good on tanks, since they all melt late game anyway.

I think tanks need better sustain options for surviving past early-mid game. Either that or %damage reduction needs to be brought back from much earlier seasons. Tanks easily feel the worst to play out of all the classes in the game because of their lack of scaling, which is really bad when you consider tanks are generally the least played class in every online game ever. Hardly anyone plays tanks because they want to play them, and now they are barely rewarded for doing so.

What they need to do is get rid of % armor pen and magic pen ENTIRELY, lower MR/armor values SIGNIFICANTLY, and make defensive items almost entirely focused on their passives/actives.

This way defensive purchases do not provide much in the way of damage, each defensive purchase is for a specific active/passive, not just "I need armor" which often turns into "which armor item gives me the most EHP via armor and hp".

Not only that, but EVERY carry would have access to both mercurial and zhonya's, but take off a huge amount of offensive scaling to do so.

I think armor tank items can stack really well, vs Crit AD champs you can go item 3047 item 3110 item 3143 and they won't be able to touch you. Vs On hit AD champs you can swap Randuins for Thornmail and it's equally good

MR items suck. 55 MR on all tank Magic resist items is super lacklustre. I think there should be new MR items that give 70-100 MR, even if it was just one or two of them

there is a reason for this, it's to prevent shit like tank ekko, tank zed, tank rengar, tank akali, etc. most tanks have ways to further increase the value of tank items, such has malphite literally doubling his armor, rammus W, Ornn passive, if tank items ever become efficient we enter a tank only meta

Sometimes a single tank item can make the difference between getting blown up by an assassin in half a second and surviving his burst and being able to fight back.

Plenty of champions also dont require damage to perform their job and some bruisers aremore effective if they survive longer
