should supports have less unconditional protection?

when i think of at least decently-designed supports champions, Taric Bard and oddly enough Lux come to mind

imo part of this appeal is that they have some skill-cap tied to having to do something to protect people better, whereas Sona Lulu Karma Janna etc just press their heals and shields off cooldown

i know Taric point and clicks his protection too but he has unreliability in continuing to do it, by needing to use his passive well, which also requires him to cycle through his spells/land Es so he can actually apply passive against champs who want to kite him

Bard W takes 10 seconds to become a modest heal

Lux shield is a skillshot, but that means she can shield multiple teammates at a time. rewards good positioning by doubling the returning shield.

even Soraka can't perma-heal people after buying m.regen items and needs to consistently land Q to keep her from killing herself on her own health costs.

i think this is much more interesting design, rather than just having low cooldown protection spells, they should require a little more interaction and reward thoughtful use of skills by giving you much stronger support-plays if you play well . Janna for instance already has some impressive plays she can make with usage of her Q and R, but there's no reason to go beyond the bare minimum because it's safer and still highly rewarding despite being 0 effort.

if we ever get around to reworking enchanters this is where i would start; more skill expression is def a must-have on a lot of these champs
