I always try to win. But I don't always play meta.
The game that made me salty enough to actually write about it, I was playing Xayah top(been playing her there for a while, it's pretty fun). Playing off meta isn't the issue, it's more people just doing nothing while you're trying to push down towers because they just wanna chase someone to the ends of the earth while the three others on the enemy team are down for 40 seconds. I've had this kind of thing happen a lot in most of my recent games, but this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The ones that get me are the players who lack any resilience. It's like touching a charred piece of paper, watching it break apart into a million pieces and scatter everywhere. "gg, I'm done", says the person in lane - x when the score is tied and it's only 12 min in; but they died, so it's gg.
Don't get me wrong, what you described can be irritating as well, but at least in your case, they still express the will to keep playing. I'm still running into games where players want to be handed a free win, or quit.
I almost always think a game can be won in most occasions, provided everyone is actually trying to win the game by killing the nexus, not dominating the enemy team over and over and over until they eventually catch up and outscale. The times I do think it's pointless to even be playing are when I am playing someone who, if they fall behind, they're donezo and despite checking my ping beforehand for a good 5 minutes, suddenly I'm getting 300 ping and everything is taking 3 seconds, and I die like 3 times to the enemy laner who picked someone who, once they get 6, they can carry hard as long as they have one item, and my team is just throwing themselves at them despite me pleading for a 15 minute surrender where I can't even stay under tower and all lanes have lost and I'm literally unable to do a thing to help my team, and two duo'd players refuse for the whole game to surrender. Games like that I really see the value in just AFKing. It's too bad for me since I refuse to do so.
