Not all games roll that way. When ArcheAge rolled out with level 55 as the new cap, raised from 50, it was an extremely long grind. It was so long that a large number of the player base complained to the point where they cut the amount of experience needed to level up in half. In CS:GO when they changed the ranking system, they just left people as they were, and threw them in to a completely different raking system without adjusting anything. This led to people deranking like crazy. I went 8 wins straight after the launch of this new system, and after my 1st loss in the new system, I deranked. However, in games like Guild Wars 2, when the WvW level systems were changed, you were converted over based on how much experience you had, and what your level would be, and thus, unlocking all the rewards up to that level. In WoW, you can buy level up boosts that will take you all the way, and you'll be clicking for a while to unlock everything up to that level. In RuneScape, when the previous level 99 Slayer was officially made into a 120 skill, experience was converted over to the new system, and people who were level 99 Slayer and already had a virtual level of 120, immediately unlocked all new Slayer opportunities. It's different for different games, and they decided to go with the "everyone starts here" route, which isn't much different from the position they took on Honor.
